Transfer Muppetery and Day Dreaming..Team vs Stars
Honestly...It's getting ridiculous. We must be realistic.
We are a club in transition, have finished outside of CL places for 2 seasons in a row...and our international appeal for that reason, has gone off the boil.
Those days that we were in CL and raping European giants home and away, we could have attracted whoever we wanted, but didn't have the money....as it stands, it's the exact opposite.
I include myself in list of people who day dreamed a bit of my share, but we must realize that we don't have the upper hand when it comes to competing with CL teams for a player, UNLESS a player personally favours our team (Suarez) and it doesn't happen often.
I see our signings being criticized by our own fans (well not necessarily here), by enemy fans, and even by fans of small time clubs (Stoke, West Brom, etc) and it makes me glad that we aren't the only transfer muppetery fans around only. 90% of the fans base of all teams are transfer muppets who play FM2011 everyday and see the world from the angle.
We will not sign Sanchez', Hazards of this world before we get back to the big stage. We don't have 220K salary City had to offer for world class players without being in CL, and our owners see transfer fees as ASSET and wages as EXPENSE. They'd be willing to pay over the odds for a transfer fee, but not for wages.
Point being. Trust the club, trust the people who are making the decision...we are in good hands, we clearly have a strategy and a specific plan.
We'll have a team, and not bunch of stars with no team chemistry. We'll have a team of battlers who will give their 100%, who won't sulk and who'll be proud to wear the red shirt. Ones who won't ruin the dressing room and that'll be our driving force.
Names don't win football matches, teams do. We might not sign any fancy names, but we'll be much stronger than last season. Our first season is as good as any team in the league (YES IT IS), it's the bench we've always lacked, and our signings, though unflashy, significantly improve our depth and options.
I have faith... I have a lot of faith...I believe we'll be a team.
during our 5-2 win over Fulham, I visited a Chelsea forum, and one of their extremely cocky posters made a great point: "That Liverpool team doesn't really have any world class players, but they play as a team with limitless passion. and that's scary"
That bolded quote is key. I don't think we'll have any other WORLD CLASS players other than Gerrard, Reina or Suarez....but we'll have a lot of players in top class bracket in likes of Johnson, Lucas, Carroll, etc and amazing team players in likes of Carra, Kuyt, Adam, Meireles, etc.
We'll be a very flexible team who can adopt to different styles. Who'll be dangerous with pass and move footy, but also off wide play and set pieces. We'll be on of the TEAMEST teams of the PL. We'll have no mercenaries or sulkers in our team and our team spirit will be top notch. Believe me! importance of that is underrated.
Can't wait........we're gonna make some people look like absolute mugs..with their Neymards, Sneijders, Sanchez's, or Mata's of this world......We'll be a team. a flexible and a passionate one and that's the most important thing

Signing stars is overrated...Its impossible to live up to some of the price tags floating around out there
And just because you haven't signed any megastars doesn't mean you've had bad transfers windows like certain other teamsjuve (I wont mention any names)
A team is always > than a collection of superstars
we won a CL with Pandev, Muntari, and Chivu fgs

Liverpool are going to be back to their best, I'm sure of it. Dalgish and the new owner have unlocked the spirit imo.
On a side note, how much have you guys spent this summer till now? Can't keep track.
EDIT: What was the Chelsea forum you visited?

Re: Transfer Muppetery and Day Dreaming..Team vs Stars
somewhere between 24 and 29 millions pounds has been spent so far this summer.
Also, being outside of European football does not damage our reputation or historic draw, it damages our current draw. Even then, I would say that our movement in the market and ambitions would make up for that with most players.
Honestly though, it sounds as though you're trying to convince yourself more than others there, Sepi.

Re: Transfer Muppetery and Day Dreaming..Team vs Stars
^ Convince myself of what? It's just a reactionary post to the reflection I am getting from some fans (well not really here) and those full time doom and gloomers. Those who wank to Matas and Agueros of this world and in their own dreams had them signed from the first day. Of course it's ideal, and I'd be delighted with that, but with our stance at the moment and lack of European footy, it's unlikely and doesn't put us in a good negotiation position.
My post was basically saying that we'll still be a very competitive team without all those Nike advert, so called star signings.
We have a great first team, but now we will be in a position to have a lot more depth, and plus players who want to play here, give their all, and play as a team with a lot of passion. passion and team play can take a 7 level talented play to a 9. Something Mancs have had over the years which has made some of their not so called stars, play above their ability.
No matter who we sign, our best and most important signing of this summer will be are rested and fit Steven Gerrard. Having a 6 month rest after 10 years of playing non-stop will do wonders for him, and I have not yet forgotten what a ridiculoiusly good player he is when fit. Add to it, a fully match fit Carroll with more understanding with his team mate and better service and we already look a lot stronger than even our second half of the season form and that's all without any potential new signings.
as bhends mentioned, Inter's team that won the treble had a lot less individual talent than a team like Barca....but they were a true team with worlds of passion and it proved decisive in the end.
Convincing myself, you, bhend's dog, or bunch of gays, or angela Merkel I don't care....I am not trying to convince at all, just to reflect my thoughts about some premature fan reactions from all around the world

Of course we'll be competitive without being a Nike advert, we're sponsored by ADIDAS (soon to be Warrior)! :!:

sadly i think this only work for british players (who are well aware of our past and all that.)RedOranje wrote:

but if im being honest, i think that most of the continental players, especially the youngs ones whe are targetting (who for example where 16-17yrs old in 2005), wont know much about what LFC has done in the 70s-80s, or who Kenny was as a player, ect..
its how we will conviced them that our project is the way forward, and the money we will show to them, that will be more persuasive for those kind of targets imo.

We've won the Euro Cup/CL 5 times. That's not the type of thing that just gets forgotten.
Likewise we not long ago were ranked the best club in Europe by UEFA and managed to beat and in some cases humiliate the likes of Chelsea, ManUtd, Arsenal, Barca, Juve, Milan, Inter, and Madrid. Yes, that was not the case in the past 2 seasons, but it was certainly not so long ago that 16-18yos would not have seen it.

Re: Transfer Muppetery and Day Dreaming..Team vs Stars
I fully agree with Sepi on the fact that superstars or not the main thing is to build up a team that would work as a team . .
plus our transfers also goes a long way to back the philosophy of teamwork . .cause for me we have bought one player in Adam & another most likely target is Downing. .Both have been the best players in their respective clubs last season & not because of the fact that they are brilliantly talented but they are adequately equipped & what sets them apart is the fact that they have given a little more then 100% for their teams . .getting such players into a squad which needs to believe is definitely the right thing to do . .
also there isn't really any point complaining about the price of English players, cause its high time we accept the fact that the market is expensive & really our owners are just getting the players that they think the manager wants at any price . .
now on the issue addressed by Red & Nj . . i would say Red is spot on the fact that maybe glories have been hard to come by but in no way is our triumphs forgotten or our achievements faded . .yes the last two seasons have made it a little harder for us to bargain in the market but then again the name commands a certain level dignity which can never be removed . . .& certainly the changes the positive vibe that we all feel with the emergence of John W Henry & Co. is very very visible . .
but yes it would be difficult to get some of the targets we want . .but so it for many other teams. . i mean if Hazard or Sanchez is offered a place in Madrid or Barca they won't be opting for ManU or Arsenal! & no matter how much we hate them ManU achievements have been notable . .but that is just how the footballing world is at this moment . .
but i believe & thankfully our new owner & the King has established that believe again that in two to three years time we would not an understudy to the other English clubs but rather an threat to all of Europe . .

King kenny brought back team spirit to liverpool, it's amazing if u think of it only a couple of months ago liverpool were losing to almost everyone yet when king kenny came liverpool turned 180 degrees. from players who seemed average at best turned into class players. King kenny now is brining players who WANT TO BE in liverpool and of great quality and that is what i think will be the difference next season from all other teams, now sure we might not have world class players like the chelsea, city, utd etc.. but we do have team spirit which will make the differnece next seaosns

You can make a team and have solidarity and team spirit with stars involved as well, lest we slip in to a "this or that; black or white" mentality.

Let's not under rate the experience that comes with WC or the more 'expensive players' around.
A good balance is what is needed.
