The European Champions have somehow managed to end up with a worse team on the last day of the transfer window than they had on the day they won it.

Actually, a lot of the big clubs have had poor summers,

Barca bought average defenders and Suarez, Utd have bought every left footed player on the market while ignoring their shocking CB's, Arsenal bought Snachez but still need a CF, DM and CB. Liverpool have overspent but at least they have depth.

Honestly though, Utd are not set up at all for 3-5-2.

They should be making use of Mata, Di Maria and Rooney/RVP

Rafael Jones Rojo Shaw
Herrera Fletcher
Valencia Mata Di Maria

Still, that defence is so poor. They still need a DM, a CB and probably a RB too since Rafael is always injured.

It's been a trainwreck of a window for them, no questioning it. Far, far too top heavy with a bunch of players ill-equipped to fit into any formation together at the same time, much less the one Beavis seems intent on using.

He spent large portions of last season successfully playing in a central midfield role for Madrid, it's not exactly a move that's shocking or out of the blue.

It'd make more sense if they didn't sign Herrera, they need a DM to help the defence now.

Blind.

Herrera and Di Maria provide some much needed intelligence, passing, and control and Blind will likely provide the cover behind them (at least that will be the intention). Regardless, it won't be Di Maria's ability to play at a CM, something he's already proven he quite clearly can do, that decides United's overall fate this season, it will be LvG's willingness to adapt his tactics and formations to what he has at his disposal.
