No way he starts for Colombia and England.

As far as Freds confed cup goes, who cares?

Judging players in a glorified pre-season tournament is just as bad, if not worse than judging players via Youtube

Giaccherini was a beast in the Confed cup, as was Candreva.

There are a lot more national teams he wouldn't start for, I thought the guy was being sarcastic.

Ramires, so world class hes being rotated with a near fossilised Frank Lampard Proud

On the national level he's definitely better than Cavani.

and writing off players simply because they don't play in a top league isn't ?

well top players play in top leagues. Are we really going to argue about that ?

I've watched Fred at lyon regularly and no he's not a WC nor a top CF. doesn't mean he's a bad player, far from it. In the right system with the right player he can do a great job like he did in the confed cup. Would you say that Fabiano 2010 was WC or a top CF ? no.
Fred in doing a great job but he's a system player imo.

Hope this isn't aimed at me considering this is my first post on this debate

I'm just pointing out that using a Confed cup to justify an opinion is madness.

why is it madness?
Spain took all their starters, and most definitely tried to call it a pointless pre-season tournament is stupid..

My question is why is a decline when but 10 years ago they were apparently fine, who is to say it won't pick up again 10 years from now? decline kind of implies it will never pick up.

My question is why does Brazil not having a WC CF mean that the entire South American continent is out of talent? Did they have any WC CF in 1982? Yet that side is considered the most talented of all Brazilian sides... not to mention that Chile and Colombia have never been as strong as they are now, and Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay remain top 8 sides. SA football has definitely not declined.

Sidenote: Fred plays for a team that was 17th last season in the Brazilian league and narrowly escaped relegation. WC Laughing

Brazilian League is the most unpredictable league in the world unlike other leagues (especially in Argentina), anyone could relegate and anyone could win.. there hasn't been a back to back winner since Sao Paulo almost 10 years ago or so. Fred was also injured majority of the season so he had no contribution towards their relegation, love how yall forget he was the leading scorer the season prior with 30+ goals and also scored a nice lump some prior to him going down last season.

Anywho Nick is reaching.. he said South America talent pool is declining because we don't have any up and coming greats when thats very wrong. SA has players dominating in Europe and in SA of all ages.. from Suarez to James Rodriguez to the next GOAT CB, Balanta of River Plate.. there's talent to spread.

I think South American talent pool it's stable. What it's not stable, as OP pointed out, it's Argentina's and especially Brazil's talent pool, that has declined.

It's not only fred. It's going from this:

Rivaldo - Ronaldo - Ronaldinho

To this:

Hulk ? - Fred - Neymar

Neymar is the only one close to the three aforementioned players that won the WC in 2002.

Strikers in general have disappeared.

When u you think of quality strikers, only a few come to mind.
