So when this season is done the series is up to par with the books or is it only covering half of book 5?

It will be done and perhaps surpass it, but at this point the writers no longer have a source material to work with so what happens in the show may not happen in books 6 and 7

To add to BC's post, the writers confirmed a while back that they are going to take the story into a different direction from the books

Gonna be alternating a lot here. Gonna do the rounds and pay my respects to Tyrion, Jaime, and Cersei and all the other Lannisters still alive.

Eventually might stick with the Knight of Flowers. But I need him to showcase his fighting skills ffs before I commit.

Ohherwise I'm hoping some of the new characters take my breath away.
