Okay my quick thoughts about the episode.
I for one thought it wasn't up to episode 9 standards.
It was good, but I would put the Battle of Blackwater ahead of this one.
Ygritte's death wasn't that emotional.
And what was that about Aemon telling Sam about his old love life
seriously was that filler?
Proud for my man Jon who stood up and took leadership when needed. Thought that fight between him and The Then leader was BOSS. Better than Thorne's with Tormund.
What I got most excited about though was the end - Jon walking out of them doors to find Mance

Littlefinger has the most swag in all of Westeros(or whatever the whole country is called ) and is STILL smarter and more tactical than your boy Stannis by A COUNTRY MILE. Stannis is nothing without Davos. As Tom said, Stannis is generic as hell. How many times has that "rightful heir" BS been spewed over and over again in books and movies over the years? There's really nothing special or outstanding about Stannis that should earn him such a cult following. But I'm not a book reader and I'm judging strictly based on the show.....and based on the show? He's BORING.

When I say generic I mean generic in an everyday sense. He's not a perfect hero or a twisted villain
He's sensible, he's rational he's completely down the middle. Ordinary is a better word.
That's not a bad thing but I don't see the hype for somebody who's pretty ordinary as a character.
The 'rightful heir' crap doesn't sit with me. There is no rightful heir because somewhere along the line somebody takes the throne by force, and then he dies and a relative of the man who had no right to take the throne in the first place thinks he has a special claim.
His claim is legit, but it's not rightful, no ones is imo
It's like me stealing £500,000 from a bank (Pls go NSA i'm making a point u pos)
And then my kid moaning when I die from a coke overdose and the authorities seize the money.
"But that was my dads money I am the rightful heir to the stolen moneh"

Westeros rights of conquest laws are clear. The throne is under Barratheon control now. If someone conquers the realm again it will be theirs under the rights of conquest. And even disregarding that, Joffrey/Tommen are bastards who have literally no right. It is Stannis' duty to get rid of them and put the true Barratheons. Stannis is a morally grey character with multiple dimensions to his personality. He does not need "swag" being the badass he is.

@BB In my opinion, the key difference is that
A. In the show, they don't detail Stannis extensive accomplishments.
B. A combination of mediocre acting and the fact that the show is designed for you to identify with the Starks. Stannis went against Robb and Tyrion, two of the more loved guys on the show, which makes him the enemy.
Here are the key things you probably don't know about Stannis:
This man is far and away the best canidate for king in the series. Period.
A. In the show, they don't detail Stannis extensive accomplishments.
B. A combination of mediocre acting and the fact that the show is designed for you to identify with the Starks. Stannis went against Robb and Tyrion, two of the more loved guys on the show, which makes him the enemy.
Here are the key things you probably don't know about Stannis:

- o He has gotten screwed over his entire life - He never actually thought rebelling against the Mad King was right, but, because he's barely younger than Robert, he does his duty and supports him.
o After he holds out against the combined tyrell army and navy and never surrendering his and Robert's home of storms end, Robert doesnt give him any credit for fighting off the siege, despite the fact that this quite literally wins Robert the war.
===>Mace Tyrell is warden of the south and High Marshal of the Reach. The Reach is the agricultural heart of westeros and for this reason has by far the highest population and is the second richest region (only the gold mines of the Westerlands is richer). When Mace Tyrell combines his armies with that of his bannermen they form the single largest force (to put it in perspective mace is able to give renly 100,000 troops, literally just putting them at his disposal, Robb Stark marches south with about 20,000 soldiers)
----->Mace's mother is (olenna tyrell) was born olenna redwyne. This makes the redwynes and tyrells very close allies. In fact the lord of the arbor, Paxter Redwyne is the 1st cousin of mace tyrell and his brother in law (Paxter married mace's sister). House Redwyne controls an area where they grew the best grapes for making wine. In fact arbor gold is a world famous white wine. and through trade in wine have become extremely wealthy. The redwyne fleet consists of 200+ warships and 1000+ trading ships.
----->Stannis manages to tie up all of the military forces of the reach by holding out against their siege. Had stannis surrendered (his troops were starving and badly outnumbered (robert had taken the majority of the baratheon forces with him)) the tyrell forces and redwyne fleet would have won the war for the targaryens. and Robert and Ned would be dead.
o Robert doesnt give stannis an ounce of credit. He gives Ned the credit for lifting the siege of storm's end. After kings landing is taken Robert forgets his little brother is starving and under siege, lucky for stannis Ned remembers and Ned takes an army to aid stannis. Mace tyrell seeing that the targaryens have lost (and being a coward) surrenders to ned without a fight.
o tannis is given the job of conquering dragonstone and defeating the last remnants of targaryen power. Stannis goes and does so. However robert only blames stannis for not capturing dany and viserys.
o Robert gives control of the stormlands/storm's end to renly, his and stannis's younger (at this time kid) brother. Stannis gets dragonstone and the island. The stormlands can generate much more income and support a much larger population. To be fair to robert putting renly in charge of subduing and controlling former targaryen loyalists might have gotten the kid killed. Stannis fully subdues dragonstone.
o After robert becomes king, he chooses Jon Arryn as his hand, instead of his brother.
o During the greyjoy rebellion, stannis basically wins the war. AGAIN he gets zero credit. The greyjoy's rule the iron islands (GoT vikings), and their strength is in their navy. They start the war by attacking the Lannister fleet and Lannisport (tywin at this point is robert's father-in-law). Despite the fact that tywin is a military genius, his fleet is caught totally off guard. the lannister navy is destroyed at anchor.
----------> The iron islands declare independence and are now the strongest navy on the sunset sea (west of westeros), since the lannister fleet is wrecked. Robert tasks stannis with the job of defeating the greyjoy's navy. He takes the royal fleet across the south of westeros and joins his force with paxter redwyne's fleet. Stannis sets a trap off Fair Isle and destroys the iron born fleet. Once the Greyjoy navy is sunk, the war was over. The iron born have a great navy, but they have the smallest population and the least resources. Once robert could transport ground troops to the iron islands they were finished.
o Robert proceeds to insult Stannis by having Ned finish the war at his side by making balon bend the knee. He relegates stannis to conqueror great wyk, instead of the capital pike. Stannis obeys.
o When jon arryn becomes hand of the king, stannis becomes the master of ships and is responsible for maintaining the royal navy. He also works alongside jon arryn to rule westeros in roberts name (who was too drunk and lazy to actually attend small council meetings) and jon arryn comes to respect stannis enough that he wants to send his and lysa's son to foster with stannis. Robert of course gave him no credit for doing his job.
o Stannis was actually the one who suspected that joffrey, tommen and myrcella weren't roberts kids. he confided this in jon arryn and they investigated the case together. Stannis thought that robert wouldnt believe him if he told him cersei's kids werent his. Robert didnt love stannis and would have thought stannis was trying to make himself the heir. Stannis thought robert would believe it if jon arryn, who he loved as a surrogate father, told him the truth. Stannis took Arryn to visit roberts bastards and pointed out they all had dark hair. Arryn then looked up the histories of the great houses of westeros and discovered that anytime a baratheon and lannister married the kids always had black hair. Jon arryn died soon after (his wife killed him, for an unrelated reason) and stannis believed the lannisters had killed jon arryn and escaped the capital. He was sure Robert wouldnt believe him. and he didnt have the military forces to challenge the lannisters by himself.
o after jon arryn's death robert goes to his bff ned to offer him the position of hand of the king, further insulting stannis.
o later on after robert dies, renly has the nerve to claim the throne and ask stannis to follow him. Punkass, ingrate renly who stannis made sure didnt starve to death when he was kid and the tyrells were besieging their home. Has the nerve to betray stannis his older brother. The younger brother is supposed to obey the older brother, its why stannis followed robert in rebellion and refused to surrender in the face of overwhelming odds. Even though robert always treated him like dirt (eg on stannis' wedding night Robert bangs his wife's sister (stannis' sister-in-law) on stannis martial bed), this of course humiliated house florent (stannis' wife's family), and by extension stannis, robert acted like it was no big deal. Renly who without stannis would have starved to death or been captured by the tyrells and given to the mad king for burning, betrays him.
This man is far and away the best canidate for king in the series. Period.

He challenged Renly to a one on one which Renly declined. He is smart and knows that it would be better to have one death than thousands. With one stroke he destroyed one half of his enemies and had half of Renly's army join him. That is intelligence. And you forgot Blackwater? That was top class badassery.

Great post Le Sam. Yeah , Stannis is under rated in the show. But there is a reason.
Anyway , i can understand why it seems like that to people who have only been watching the show . But even from that , i would never presume him generic , boring or just ordinary . He's not that. He's a hard man , full of fury and justice and values . Someone who would well fix the wrongs others have made , but in cold blooded justice , without remote. Like he did with Davos , when he cut his fingers off because of his past. Despite saving him and who knows how many more , including his own wife.
Stannis did his part in following others , like every leader should be doing first of all . And when his moment came , leadership was stollen from him. From a man that is a natural leader , however despised. Now , i can't say if he's the very best , but one of the best kings Westeros could have , that he is for sure.
