Some what predictably the Everton-Wolfsburg game has pretty much grinded to a halt. Both teams seem OK with the scoreline

Wolfsburg completely dominated tonight. Great start for Everton, it looks like they are making this competition their priority.

Mirallas makes it 4-0 after a great pass from Eto'o, no less than what Everton deserved.

Sevilla win 2-0 after a completely dominant performance. Seeing Banega, Denis and Deulofeu on the pitch together was every bit as enjoyable as I'd thought it'd be.

On what basis? On the basis of this game? Benaglio had been a rock for Switzerland and has been excellent for Wolsfburg so far in the season. Sommer while impressive for Gladbach has been quite indecisive as he is yet to surpass Benaglio who is a pillar of consistency.

That was a flattering result for Everton tbh. A combination of Howard, shit finishing and poor officiating made this look like a rout when it was anything but.

Everton had just 13 shots compared to Wolfsburg's 27. They conceded an own goal, the penalty foul was clearly outside the box and Mirallas' goal was offside.

Mertens as bencher in Serie A so as to weaken Napoli and as starter in EL so as to get points for ranking Uefa...

On the basis of Basel's international matches in CL and EL, not just today. After all, today was his 50th match in EL/CL, where he had to face quite some big guns and did usually fantastic there.

Diego Benaglio only played a third of the matches  in Europe with Wolfsburg (today was his 18th), and while he had more matches with the NT (61 vs 7 of Sommer), aren't there bazillions of people who always insist how much lower the standard of NT football is when compared to club football?

NT level is indeed lower than club level, yet certainly not lower than the Swiss league, a point you forget to mention considering this is Sommer's first season in a top level league while Benaglio has been competing in there for over 9 years and won the plaudits of many for many years, still is only 31.

You know I rate Sommer yet there is some way to go before he can be rated above Benaglio.

Well, on the other hand, Sommer never failed to impress on the CL/EL level, even though the Swiss Super League isn't that high level, and one can only beat what is put in front of one.

One big advantage of Yann Sommer compared to Diego Benaglio is the passing accuracy, BTW. While Benaglio has an average of about 60% there, Sommer usually has about 80%, which means that he is better at keeping the ball in the own team's possession even when doing long passes.

You're saying as if I am criticizing Sommer on the European level, to which I haven't. Nor have I criticized his time in Switzerland yet you cannot rank a GK amongst the top until he plays amongst the top.

I cannot agree on the second point mostly because Benaglio is known to attempt many risky passes, the ones that make it end up creating chances as does his risky but effective play with the ball.

My criticism of Sommer is that along with his indecisiveness at times, he is not the most skilled with the ball yet we are talking about minor characteristics of a goalkeeper here.

Where Sommer DOES succeed over Diego is penalties (without a doubt), reflexes and 1 on 1.

Hm. If Yann Sommer weren't skilled with the ball, then he wouldn't have signed up with BMG as Lucien Favre specifically wanted a goalie who is a good football player.

Sommer is more involved in the build-up play, although this is of course nothing one could hold against Benaglio as it is a matter of a team playing style, too. But you can't say that Sommer doesn't create chances as he does with his pinpoint passes to the wide midfielders even. Even though he passes very close to the sidelines, you will maybe see one pass per match go out, while the others usually reach the players there.

As for risky passes - AFAIK that's something Lucien Favre wouldn't like as he loves his possession football. Sommer sometimes has the most touches of his team in a game, while Benaglio has a more traditional style there and thus isn't as much involved.

If one looks at how the game involves, I consider Yann Sommer the better choice due to his ball playing qualities (additionally to his shot stopping, of course).
