WC year, usually influences the result. Ronaldo was beyond awful at the world cup and it could easily cost him the award.

I'd be frankly surprised if a german was in the top 5 actually. And i'd be surprised if robben made it into the top 3. This award is all about flair/goals/marketing/form/flavour of the month now. 1.ronaldo/messi 2.messi/ronaldo 3.a golden "next big thing" 'insert name'..look, what people dont know is that some are tired of the usual suspects already, so they (journalists/media) will do anything to promote the next big star in terms of talent..ibra, robben are old news now and peter crouch would actually stand a better chance winning it than any german player at this point..the germans are just meh to be honest, efficient but not fantastic (bar neuer) but then again, he's still a gk. Didn't participate in the Copa del Rey final Clasico when his team won (only Clasico that Madrid won that season).

Finished 3th in the league, also because Ronaldo didn't impact any big games against Barca and Atleti.

Sucked in the World Cup.

Sucked in the CL final and scored lots of garbadge goals in the competition against Galatasaray, Schalke, Dortmund B, 4th and 5th goals when the tie was done and dusted against Buyern.

Im pretty sure Madrid had a good shot at winning the league until the last few games, when Ronaldo then got injured and madrids form quite literally disintegrated without him? the CL final and WC both unfortunately coincided with his fitness problem, but I definitely cant remember him sucking in the CL final. Lets be honest which contender didn't suck in the WC? Are robben and Neuer seriously contenders?

CL all time top scorer + the trophy, European golden boot + a blistering start to this season should seal it for CR I think.

Messi should not be ruled out yet. Remember cr7 wasnt even in the running, without wc qualification, without any excuses, without any awards and without a trophy to show for it too..till messi got injured for a long time. Then cr7 went on a stat-padding run for 2 months and suddenly he became favourite..infact, the voting period was extended ffs..so what makes it a no contest for cr7? What makes cr7 a landslide favourite now? Goals? Take it back to 10 years ago and cr7 isn't even nominated in the top 3. So any body who thinks messi isn't a genuine favourite is in for a shocker.

Ronaldo has a better case to win it this year than last year couple with Messi's poor form last season and this should in theory be a cakewalk. Obviously anything can happen between now and December that can get Messi closer to getting it but with the form Ronaldo is in I very much doubt that's possible

Many German players deserve to be in the top three and DiMaria too but as bankz said it depends how hyped you are which is part of the reason why the Balon dor is such a farce
