Too bad voting was extended last year for that game, and wasn't extended this year for this game. Laughing

No, Ronaldo and Messi were both involved in 3 goals this week alone. So I don't see how that this week would warrant Messi winning over Ronaldo.

The Bayern winger believes the individual award is no longer decided on achievements and expects Manuel Neuer and Arjen Robben to miss out for that reason

Bayern Munich attacker Franck Ribery feels the Fifa Ballon d'Or is no longer going to the best player in the world and is decided by politics, rather than performances.

The Frenchman was beaten to the prestigious individual award by Cristiano Ronaldo for his 2013 efforts despite guiding Bayern to a historic treble.

Ribery, who is not even in the 23-man shortlist that will be whittled down the three stars shortly this time around, believes the trophy has lost all meaning after witnessing first hand how the Real Madrid star was treated last year.

"I learned a lot during last year's Ballon d'Or gala. As soon as I got there, I told my wife that I would lose," Ribery told Sport Bild.

"I saw how Sepp Blatter was hugging Ronaldo and how his entire family was there. I'm not stupid. It was clear that he had to win it. He wouldn't have brought his entire family with him otherwise.

"It will be the same this year. What can I say about it? Manuel Neuer or Arjen Robben should win it. You can't disagree with this. Manu has won it all, he is a great guy and he isn't arrogant. Arjen has played an incredible season in the Bundesliga and then a fantastic World Cup.

"But I fear it will be about politics again. The Ballon d'Or is no longer for the best player. It's all about politics. Fabio Cannavaro won it in 2006 because he won the World Cup, that's all.

"I don't miss the Ballon d'Or. I am not jealous because this award doesn't mean anything to me any more. I am happy with what I have in Munich.

"When 70,000 fans are screaming my name at the Allianz Arena, I get goosebumps. I can go home happy after that."

An injury-plagued 2014 played a role in Ribery's absence from this year's award, in which Germany and Bayern goalkeeper Neuer, four-time winner Lionel Messi and current holder Ronaldo are favourites.

He has a point tbh... I don't understand why he's been bitter for so long but it is true that he probably would have won if not for the whole politics surrounding Ronaldo. Would have been interesting to see the votes before and after the extension, I wouldn't be surprised if Ribery was set to win it before hmm

As for this year, Neuer deserves the Balon D'or every bit Ronaldo does. Best goalkeeper in the world by a long shot, best player in the World Cup... What does he need to do?

best goalkeeper in the world by a long shot ? i'm pretty sure courtois had a bigger contribution in his team reaching the CL final and winning the league than neuer's contributions with bayern and germany .

best player in the world cup ? please ... he was germany's best player IN ONE GAME .

Ever heard of the importance of the psychological factor? With some keepers in goal, the strikers automatically become afraid and shoot worse. But one has to work for that fear factor by immaculate performances otherwise. :coffee:

To be honest, I really don't think Neuer should win the Ballon d'or.

That would be a little too constructed and forced for my taste, as the most meaningful argument would be he's the only player of our WC winning team that is regarded as the 'best in the world' in his position, and thus could be considered within the framework of obsessing about 'individual' contribution that the award is embodying.
But then he didn't stand out from others of our team so much that it would suggest itself he should get an indivual award; not because he wasn't absolutely fantastic, but because many players contributed in relatively equal parts.

That is also the exact same reason why it would have been strange for me if Ribéry had won it last year. Not because he didn't 'deserve' it, he clearly did, but because he was one amongst others in our team and this whole notion of singling out one would seem somewhat inappropriate.

So thinking about it, I don't think anyone of the German team should win it, especially if that would encompass that we have to spend our time here trying to argue, justify and convince other fans why the respective player would merit winning it, and I really don't feel like going begging around, not generally and least of all for the sake of this award.

Ronaldo is the fitting guy to win it, in every sense.

Let's give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's, if you catch my drift Laughing
