We are cutting off passing lanes effectively and not pressing like maniacs, Rooney is leading that very well. Depay disrupting it and being told what to do. CAM literally have to hoof it. Good stuff.

our defense is so bad man, quintero is basically making our defense looks like a joke. Definitely need the improvement if we plan to get that PL cup this year

i think he was more like a 10 or deep lying forward this game. Dropped back so much and created so many chances with the final passes

I'm okay with the defense, they were pretty calm and I believe they need some time to renter in the "competition mode". Let's be fair, Club America is playing with their best players and they are giving all they can to beat us, while our team is just testing tactics and trying to get fit. Besides this, they are a really really good team with very skillful players who generally embrace spectacular football.

I agree with Jibers; there is a little problem when we start building up from the defense. Players should work a little bit more when it comes about support runs because at a higher level this problem could cost us.

I didn't like Depay's performance from this half. He seemed so disoriented but I understand his difficulty to adapt due to the fact that he isn't used to play in the central axis of the field. Yes, he gave many passes but his efficiency wasn't what we need. Sometimes he was chaotic, disappointing first touch of the ball and imprecise through balls for Rooney. Also he looked a little bit static for almost entire 1st half when he wasn't in possession of the ball or chasing it. No attacking runs...

Let's hope to see Bastian in the 2nd half and a little improvement from Carrick and Morgan at giving the ball further without too much hesitation.

LATER EDIT: Herrera, Januzaj, Pereira, McNair, Schweinsteiger, Wilson, Evans are just a few names that I saw starting the 2nd half. I think the entire team has changed.

i think it's just the gelling problem that they have, should be better overtime. Depay showed a lot of potential today.

I would like to see more play time from Januzaj in this season. Don't do a Pogba later on....just give him more chances like moyes did. I'm sure he will reward us somehow.

I am shocked. Blackett was fabulous. With no pressure on him, this guy just showed how talented he is. LvG needs to play him more often so he can cope better with the rhythm of the EPL and he will be a beast.

McNair is probabily his replica on the other side of the pitch but I feel him a bit less technical.

Pereira is also amazing, but he seems so imature, so inexperienced sometimes. His ball control, dribbling skills, crossing ability are amazing, but his vision and inspiration isn't at a decent level yet. He must be used in the first team more, with the more wise players so he can learn from them.

Schweini was himself again, with almost no mistake in the first half of the half, very calm, very efficient and incisive.

Phisically speaking, Herrera suffered a lot today and so did many other players, but overall the team played well, they need to get fit, to play some minutes together to catch the necesarry rhythm for the beginning of the new season and this game is the first step in this process.

I am pleased. Heart

Was expecting this sort of a match actually.

I think negatives can be overlooked here as most of them were understandably rusty and lacked match rhythm.

There are positives though, which is heartening to see.

-Impressed with Darmian
-Schneiderlin doing what he can do the best Proud No surprises therefore. He is a real steal at that price fellas. Smile
-Pereira should be given oportunities this season, especially if di maria is sold, he should be given preference. Looks really good.
-Basti started really well too. I think lvg will take time with him and wont rush him to the 11.
-Most of the youngsters looked good. Blackett was good, true.

Let's hope Di Maria won't be sold. Considering that he will join the Tour on 25th of July it's pretty clear that he will only play against PSG on 30th of July. I hope that he will catch up with the other players until the tour ends, ultimately he is a world class player so he shall cope with the situation.

And about Basti I agree with you, maybe he won't be a starter for a while and not because he isn't a good player, but because he was used for 17 years with a different type of football and now everything for him is new, he is surrounded by a lot of new aspects: tactics, personalities of his teammates, internal policy of the club etc. So, he has to adapt to this whole different environment.

Di maria should be given a go at the left flank. He will be far more effective, perhaps not as effective as in a midfield 3, but still will be better than if played in the right wing for sure.

Memphis will take time from what I have seen today. Lvg will know whats best for him and will be played accordingly.

Okay so next game I expect this should be the lineup going by this match today.

johnstone
darmian-smalling-blackett-shaw
carrick
herrera-schneidi
mata-memphis-pereira

But of course a specialist striker will play I know.

I would go with De Gea, he'll be back until the next game, at least this is what the Romanian commentator said.

Him and Valencia (if I remember well) are easily injured, nothing to worry about, not playing them was just a measure of precaution.

By the way, McNair will most probabily play as CB this season, today he had to play on the right side because of Valencia's absence. LvG himself said that McNair didn't play well as a RB the last season so this is what I expect. If Evans leaves, we will have Jones, Rojo, Smalling and McNair. Blackett looks strong on the left side. What do you think?

Blackett wasnt that great last season when played as a LB tbh. His defensive attributes are good. Even has nice passing range and decent speed. But the all important mental attributes in his game are a bit on the low side. Especially his positioning, composure, ability to handle pressure in big games and game intelligence. He is a better cb than a full back.

McNair on the other hand has better mental attributes. His composure and reading of the game is one of his strong points. But inconsistency is his problem. Will look quite good in one game and in the next will look a liability and will make mistakes.
He too like blackett is a cb.
Blackett can atleast do a job as a fb but mcnair is pretty meh in that position.

Prefer mcnair to blackett however. But thats the story of last season. We'll see how it turns out this time around. The slate should be clean for both and lvg will give them opportunities if they stay, thats sure.

please don't sell di maria, and play him to his fullest potential. We need to see more of januzaj in next season also. On the end note, i think chicharito can be the 15+ goals a season for us if we really let him play more. We have so much goodness in the midfield, and Chicharito can be our poacher in time of need. Although he doesn't really provide anything in term of creativity and build-up, he is dependable if playing consistently

Louis van Gaal wrote:On United's display against Club America: "It is our first 45-minute game. I wanted to see our defensive organisation and that was the main aspect. We didn't give a goal away, only one or two chances, so I am satisfied about that. We played like a team and [Club] America was very handy with the ball, all of the players were very aggressive and quick, so it was not so easy. All of my players have done the function of what they have to do in our philosophy, so I am happy and satisfied. We have won so in the tournament we are still in the race."

On Morgan Schneiderlin's headed winner: "He scored with Southampton, I believe five goals, so it is not a coincidence but we have practised this with him so I was very pleased with the performance. It is also a fact that America don’t have many good headers so we knew in advance that our benefit was there. Like I have said in the Premier League, it is not our benefit as we are always small.”

On the players who did not feature: “David De Gea and Antonio Valencia were injured, minor injuries, but we cannot take any risks. Marouane Fellaini is suspended for the first three [Premier League] matches so he has a longer time to prepare himself and I need to see other players. Sean Goss was not selected because I have selected other players.”

On the playing surface at CenturyLink Field: “The pitch was difficult. Also, the first surface [underneath] is artificial and the grass is always moving. You saw a lot of players slipped. You can get more injuries, which is a concern. But also last season against Real Madrid we played in such circumstances. That is the difference in the US with American football stadiums, it is more important. In England we have Old Trafford and it is only for football. It is not for entertaining. There is no One Direction. In England we live for football but in USA they live for American football and baseball.” Laughing

On his plans for the three remaining tour matches: “We use this tournament for our match rhythm, to build it up. So we play the next match against San Jose and we will also play 45 minutes for all of the players. That is our philosophy and then we will play 60 minutes and 30 minutes. Maybe in the last match we will play for 90 minutes, or use another team to play for 60 minutes. That I don’t know. I have to read the data of the players. But our plan is to play the next game with 22 players.”

On Daley Blind becoming a long-term centre-back: “It could be. Marcos Rojo is not here. He shall also come on 25 July. I want to play always with a left-footed central defender and Blind can do the job. Maybe he shall play there but all the players can play there. Last year it was Jones and Smalling, and even McNair has played there. But my preference is a left-footed defender and with Rojo and Blind we have two.”

Johnstone, Pereira and Basti were the standout performers. Basti just makes it look so easy, such a fine player. Pereira showed great tenacity, delivered some good balls into the box and looked eager to impress(which is great to see) and Johnstone did well playing that sweeper/gk role.

Darmian looked defensively solid, Memphis had a 50/50 game (some neat passes and through balls, but also looked a bit rusty and bad decision making), Scheiderlin- well taken goal, combative display, won the ball back a few times and kept things ticking. Had a solid game.

Impressed with our new signings.
