Re: The TV Series Thread - Part 4
Shitty accent aside, it's been pretty good. One thing I absolutely hate is when a movie or tv show starts out with a major event or situation and then it goes back to tell the story of how it got there. It adds nothing while spoiling certain things. It's cheap and retarded.

Inception did that and it wasn't retarded at all. I suppose it depends on how much info you are given at the start when they give you the major climatic thing happening.
It's called "in medias res" btw.

Re: The TV Series Thread - Part 4
Man, I had completely forgotten about the Inception intro. Probably because it was so short that by the time the movie got back to it I had already forgotten about it. Also, it's a lot easier to get away with it in the Inception universe with the flashbacks and dreams so you're not entirely sure of what's really happening. It wasn't bad but it didn't add much either.

Re: The TV Series Thread - Part 4
Yeah Inception really doesn't count, as the movie is so heavy on its exposition and that opening is really just a small bit of the whole story.

Re: The TV Series Thread - Part 4
They did the same in Inside Man. About the Bank robbery. It was very cleverly done. Also Gone Girl. The very first shot is Ben Affleck saying he wants to crack his wife's head open when she has her head on his lap but that shot is actually at the very end when they've already gone through all that crap.
I personally like In Medias Res very much when used properly.
Elitedam is there any specific films that you didn't like the director using that style?

It was done a lot in Breaking Bad I remember. They were pulled of quite well.

Great example. They used it so many times and it was perfect.

I also honestly don't see a problem with that narrative technique. As long as the journey to the climax of the movie is intriguing enough. It can also be a great way to set up a huge twist/shock.

I find it annoying that Netflix releases it's original series a whole season at once. No way to discuss episode per episode apart from using spoiler tags.

I can't think of any movies off the top of my head. What got me pissed off was how it was done on Narcos. I don't want to go into any more detail because this is just the general tv thread but I felt that it served no purpose and it ruined what otherwise should have been tense moments.
I remember it being done on tv shows like BSG and Stargate (I think) and finding it completely unnecessary.
I guess if used properly then it won't spoil anything but I find it a lot more likely to be a distraction rather than a technique to enhance the storytelling.
Btw, Inside Man is an amazing movie. I think I'll watch it again.

I'm a few episodes behind but you just knew it was going to be a great season when Ian McShane showed up on screen.

Yup I second this. Justified is amazing. And had an absolute goat ending. So you won't be disappointed.
