It should be said that Jan Fleischhauer is one of the worst and most notorious commenters in German journalism. I'm not going to bother reading any of his stuff, massive idiot and wannabe right-wing contrarian WUM.

It is kinda funny if May's deal passes Parliament (whenever that vote is), because it's pretty much the least Brexity form of Brexit. If you voted for Brexit you're not going to be happy with this deal.

Labour are shamelessly playing the political game, though. If Brexit is to happen, this is as good a deal from the Remainers' point of view as they could hope - and I'd guess that most of Labour's voters are remainers. Therefore Labour should really be welcoming this type of soft Brexit and vote for it. In fact, if you didn't tell me which party, Tory or Labour, was in government and asked me whose Brexit deal this was, I'd guess Labour's. They're just hoping that the Tories make a mess of this and there will be a new general election which Labour would then win. But if Brexit is to happen, Labour should be mostly happy with this deal, imo.

Yeah agreed, but they see it as a chance to force elections and negotiate their own deal, which no doubt they will think is better even if similar

I can't imagine the chaos another election or referendum would cause at this stage.

Even if Labour came in, there's still the fundamental problem of not knowing what shape Brexit should take. They could negotiate their own deal, come back and encounter the same problems May did - because lo and behold, not agreeing on what we wanted from the deal before triggering Article 50 turned out to be a horrible idea.

There's no time for new election and new deal before the end of March, when the UK is set to leave. I think it's going to be this deal or no deal.

May is a weak leader. She was a remainer to begin with, I have no idea why or how she got the job to begin with after Cameron stepped down. She has lost the respect of her party with her proposed deal and now they are out for blood. Boris hanging out Farage the weasel, everyone resigning left, right and center. Her only "support" is Leadsome who is basically the ringleader for the group planning the coup. I don't even know what she is doing. The iron lady would never have taken crap from anyone. She was hated by both sides of the aisles and still did what she believed was right. May is thr female version of Cameron. She is a human red carpet for the EU

Complainers always make the loudest noise. If these MPs who are complaining right now got their harder Brexit deal, there would be others making the noise who are at the moment silently fine with this deal. I don't think there is an alternative Brexit deal out there that would be more popular in Parliament than what May has put on the table.

Cameron was a knob, got too cocky, he was absolutely sure that Britain would vote to stay and it all blew up in his face. The only weasel here is Nigel Farage who was the face of Brexit but as soon as it came to actually implementing the bs he was spouting he quit politics and fecked off to the USA. Now everyone still sees him as the knight and shining armor when he is anything but. Boris Johnson Laughing the bumbling idiot was disliked as the London Mayor but when a power vacuum ensued he was first to stab everybody he knew in the back to claim it.

There is alot May can do. Britain voted to leave. If she doesn't think she's up for it given her remain beliefs she should have stepped aside like Cameron did. But she didn't and that's why she's getting all the heat for her putrid efforts to get the best possible deal for Britain

@Art Morte, what Britain needs is not to be governed by the EU, not to fund the countries who can't afford the membership fees and to be able to control it's borders. None of which May has delivered on. Her proposal is so bad Britain might as well stay in the EU as opposed to paying billions in the divorce bill only to be stuck to them anyhow. If she had any guts she wouldn't have taken crap from those EU pen pushers but she gave them everything they wanted. The problem with her is that she is trying to deliver on something she doesn't really believe in and this is what you get

I think May has done the right thing, the best thing for Britain. She has pursued a soft Brexit and that's the deal she's got.

Now, if she was ousted or resigned, it would only make sense if the new Prime Minister was able to negotiate (not that there's time to negotiate any more) a deal that would be more popular in Parliament than May's deal. But I don't think that a harder Brexit deal to May's soft deal would be more popular. Therefore all this talk in the UK press and Parliament alike about May being close to losing her job is a bit short-sighted, imo. I think it would change very little at this point.

I suspect the whole of the UK has similar views as parliament. Paricularly with the 49% who voted to stay in EU, if a vote were held today, it would either be stay in EU or accept May’s deal.

And re Nigel Farge, he is now being investigated for being a link to Russia influence in the US election and interesting it has been suggested the Russia influenced the Brexit vote! Could Farage be the instigator of that?

And how do you propose the UK gets any of these items done without making the sacrifices that British people are unwilling to make? If you want to retake control of the borders then you need a hard border in NI, which no one seems to want. If you want to not be governed by the EU then you can't have access to the single market. What you want is possible, but the UK seems to want to have the cake and eat it too.

What Alfred said.

The Brexit paradox is that most of those who voted to leave the EU want a hard Brexit, but either don't fully understand or care about the negative consequences - while most of those in power (the Parliament, including Mrs May) don't want a hard Brexit, because they understand those consequences. So, what they get is this soft Brexit which the Brexiteers aren't happy with because it's too soft and which the Remainers aren't happy with because they'd like to stay in the EU. The silver lining, I suppose, is that such a "worst of the both worlds" outcome should provide plenty of opportunity for the Brits to conjure up some of that trademark satirical, self-depreciating humour of theirs.

Tough talk from Spain on Gibraltar in the Brexit negotiations surprised no one on The Rock.

But there is concern that the UK's plan to leave the European Union will be used by Madrid to cause problems for this tiny strip of British territory off Spain's southern coast.

Keith Azopardi, leader of Gibraltar's opposition party, said he is disappointed the Spanish government is threatening to vote against the Brexit deal this weekend unless the wording in draft texts is changed to give Madrid greater control over the territory's future.

i think we all knew this would happen tbh. its time for people to go out and set fire to the city of london imo. trying to get things done peacefully with votes doesnt seem to work anymore. if 200k people riot in london i bet things would get done. but i did see some good news today. tommy robinson is now an advisor to the leader of UKIP. could be the first step on the political ladder for tommy robinson i really really hope so.
