Re: The official champions league knock out stage thread
Bayern can't be first in their league and according to one board member they have the best players in each position!
I really don't think bayern is a threat!
Milan won't do anything against madrids or barcas midfield!

Since ozil and Xabi have been on the team! Madrids midfield compared to Milan's is way better!

Not being first in the BL isn't a benchmark. Remember Schalke who where 15th last season and reached the semi, kicking out Valencia and Inter in the process?white_star wrote:Bayern can't be first in their league and according to one board member they have the best players in each position!

Bayern certainly aren't better than Real or Barca, but if they don't have too many injuries they're so close behind both of them, that they'll be able to grind a win from one tiny mistake.

You are right, but they aren't their best right now.
I don't think that bayern would be able to handle barca or Madrid. Madrid are fast especially on the counter, they can attack really well now, and they have a good defence!
Barca is barca they can destroy anybody if they are on form, plus they are most likely out of la liga so they will push hard for cl. I dont see bayerns defenc coping with an inform messi.

Re: The official champions league knock out stage thread
Bayerns defence, as of now, is still better than Germanys that snuffed out all of Messi at the WC, the problem isn't one fat midget, the problem is the entire Barca machine tiki-taka'ing Bayern to death.
Of course Barca will enter that match favorites. But on a good day Bayern will score three goals from two chances, with a ridiculous Gomez tap-in, a stupid volley from Robben everyone saw coming and yet couldn't stop, and maybe something Ribéry and Kroos do together, or some weird attacking run from Lahm, who knows.
Then again, on other days Bayern draw Freiburg, so who really knows.

Re: The official champions league knock out stage thread
You have to remember that the tournament football is a different game than League football. LEague football hinges on a teams ability to consistently produce better results than their competitors. Tournament football is a one-off competition. Any team can beat any other team on any given day. Granted it's far more likely for Milan to knock off Barca than for Apoel to do it, but it is possible for both to happen.
The point is that a team's league standing really doesn't matter. If they have quality players and manage to perform well over two legs, they could do it. The team's league form only comes into consideration in determining how likely a team is to perform well. A team's inconsistent form this season obviously makes it more unlikely. However, as Milan and Munich both have a rich CL pedigree, they are more likely to be able to pull it together for a 2-legged tie. Because of this, if Munich and Milan manage to move on and be drawn against Barca, I think it will be a very interesting tie. It would still be a very good tie against Madrid, but their league consistency makes it more unlikely they would have a bad performance.

Not sure about the midfield battle, but overall, Real's strength is obviously more in the attack, and Bayern's weakness is obviously the defense.... for Bayern to have a chance, they will need Schwine to be back and firing and probably Robben in top form, which is not happening atm...
For the others to have a chance, Barca and Real would need to have an off game, and the others will have to perform their very best... the fact thats its 2 legged means also the chance of random surprise result is reduced by half anyway

Re: The official champions league knock out stage thread
bad clearance by arbeloa, doesnt matter how many defenders are on the field, cant say there are any madrid players who are decent at defending set pieces and corners.
to concede that late is a joke.
other than that decent result, didnt think there would be more than 2 goals overall anyways

What are people talking about? Real Madrid didn't even play with 11 mean behind the ball, not once and Albiol was brought on because Khedira and Alonso were getting overrun.

TBF the pitch today was absolutely crap. It was artificial turf so nothing new here
And the cold. I think we will smash them in the Bernabeu. Pretty confident.

Re: The official champions league knock out stage thread
The pitch was dire. Real Madrid couldn't exactly do much. Also, Madrid were on top for the majority of the game. The goalscorer should have been sent off too, if one is to say Coentrao should have been sent off.

Crimson wrote:The biggest problem was Ozil coming off late
Putting Albiol on with less than 10mins to go was really stupid he was never going to be able to warm up enough to even have an effect on the game and Kaka cant hold up and create space like Ozil can.
We should of left the team as it was once there was about 20mins to go.
That being said Ronaldo missed 2-3 good chances to put the game away.
Although I predicted a 0-1 scoreline I will take 1-1 back to Madrid just as much.
I also feel Marcelo probably should of started considering we had no other creativity in the team other than Ozil, it's ok if Di Maria is there on the other side but with no other playmaker other than Ozil all CSKA had to do was triple mark Ozil and we could do very little going forward.
Marcelo as LB would of supplemented the attack very well while giving us another option of creating space in the final third.
For me Coentrao was very poor going forward tonight virtually invisible.
But considering the weather, CSKA pressing very well and the artificial turf lined with ice, I will take the 1-1.

Albilol shouldve introduced to midfield not for back line.We gave far too much space in midfield after that change.Gladiator wrote:What are people talking about?
