Re: FC Basel
Swiss Super League Matchday 23:
FC Thun vs FC Basel 1893
FC Thun: Faivre; Lüthi, Sulmoni, Reinamann, Schirinzi (69. Ferreira); Sanogo, Zuffi; Cassio (59. Marco Schneuwly), Christian Schneuwly, Nikci (69. Wittwer); Sadik.
FC Basel 1893: Sommer; Frei, Ajeti, Sauro; Philipp Degen, Xhaka (72. Callà), Elney, Serey Die, Voser; Streller (80. Sio), Stocker.
Goals:
24.) 0:1 - Marco Streller (assist by Philipp Degen)
60.) 0:2 - Philipp Degen (assist by Valentin Stocker)
79.) 1:2 - Andreas Wittwer (assist by Sekou Sanogo)
93.) 2:2 - OG Arlind Ajeti (assist by Thun's GK Guillaume Faivre )
FT - FC Thun 2:2 FC Basel 1893
This weekend obviously was a weekend of slapstick fails. First Braunschweig vs M'gladbach ended 1:1 with an own goal by each of their keepers, while FC Thun vs FC Basel was also decided by a slapstick own goal, albeit this time it was Basel's defender Arlind Ajeti who managed to head the long pass that came from Thun's GK Guillaume Faivre over Yann Sommer into Basel's goal.
Not amused after the match....
Here's a GIF of that slapstick own goal:

Re: FC Basel
In the RSL, teams play each other 4 time - 2x home, 2x away (there are 10 teams, thus you have 4 times 9 matches, making it 36 matchdays per season).
As for the Degen twins - both David (RW) and Philipp (RB) currently play for Basel. In the match against Thun, Philipp actually received a lot of praise, most of the time he and his brother are more or less average, though.

EL 2013/14, Last 16 (First Leg)
FC Basel 1893 vs FC Salzburg
FC Basel 1893: Sommer; Ajeti, Suchy, Sauro; Philipp Degen, Frei, Serey Die (89. Embolo), David Degen; Delgado (71. Elneny); Stocker, Sio (92. Albian Ajeti).
FC Salzburg: Gulacsi; Schwegler (46. Klein), André Ramalho, Hinteregger, Svento; Kampl (91. Lazaro), Ilsanker, Leitgeb, Mané; Jonatan Soriano, Zulj (85. Berisha).
Halftime Stats:
For the first half, a lot of the match was Salzburg vs Yann Sommer, who really had a great game so far.
FT - FC Basel 1893 0:0 FC Salzburg
And a clean sheet for FC Basel 1893 against FC Salzburg! Salzburg have scored at least 1 goal in their last 61 (!) competitive matches since November 2012, until today when they were up against Yann Sommer
In today's starting 11, Basel missed 7 of their normal starters due to injuries (Streller, Safari, Diaz, Voser, Xhaka, Ivanov, and Schär), so you could say that they weren't too bad with their B-team.
By the way, except for the 2nd GK Germano Vailati, Basel's bench was completely U21: Aliji (20), Seferagic (19), Elneny (21), Embolo (17), Dünki (19) and Albjan Ajeti (17).

EL 2013/14, Last 16 (Second Leg)
FC Salzburg vs FC Basel 1893
FC Salzburg: Gulacsi; Klein, Rodnei, André Ramalho, Svento (83. Meilinger); Kampl, Leitgeb, Ilsanker (72 Zulj), Mané; Jonatan Soriano (78. Berisha), Alan.
FC Basel 1893: Sommer; Arlind Ajeti (88. Embolo), Suchy, Sauro; Frei, Elneny; Philipp Degen, Stocker, David Degen (55. (erste Hablbzeit) Aliji); Sio (57. Xhaka), Streller.
Goals:
22.) 1:0 - Soriano (assist by Kampl).
50.) 1:1 - Marco Streller (assist by Fabian Frei)
60.) 1:2 - Gaston Sauro (assist by Arlind Ajeti)
FT - FC Salzburg 1:2 FC Basel 1893
At the start Salzburg tried to steamroll Basel, but didn't manage to score as they missed the goal by far from point blanc range.
At minute 9, Marek Suchy saw a straigth red for a stupid tackle and Basel from then had to play with 10 to 11. Consequently, Salzburg scored the 1:0 shortly thereafter.
After half an hour, idiots from the Basel fans threw stuff at the Salzburg players when they tried to kick a corner. The ref sent the players into the dressing room and stopped the match for about 15 minutes.
After the teams came back, Basel had regrouped and Streller scored the 1:1 in the 50th minute after a set piece. Salzburg tried everything, but either they failed due to their inability in front of the goal or due to Yann Sommer's excellence. Then Basel scored a second goal after another set piece.
In the 56th minute, Arlind Ajeti was lucky only to get booked after he stupidly attacked one Salzburg player à la Zidane in the 2006 WC final. In the 86th minute, a stupid foul by Alan saw Salzburg reduced to 10, too.
So in summary we had 6 yellows, 2 reds, 15 minutes extra break, Basel with 10:11 for 77 minutes and the end result Salzburg 1:2 Basel. Basel thus proceeds to the EL quarter final...
Yann Sommer only allowed 1 goal in two matches against the FC Salzburg offense that normally scores 3+ goals per match on average...

Re: FC Basel
I don't follow Basel beyond some this forum & European games. Somehow I had this idea that Taulant Xhaka is the automatic starter. However going thorough some other sites I find Mohamed Elneny has played equal or more games.
@ rwo, would you give a comparative of these two!!!

Re: FC Basel
Well, Taulant Xhaka is a DM who can also play CM and the FB positions, but he is sometimes a bit too aggressive and is prone to hard fouls and yellow cards.
Mohamed Elneny is a DM who can also play as CM and even AM. They also have played together as double pivot in front of a defensive line of 4 players.
If you need a physical presence who can frustrate attackers, then Taulant Xhaka isn't the worst idea, and thus he was used yesterday to tighten the defense. Generelly I'd say Mohamed Elneny is a better player, though.
By the way, Taulant Xhaka decided that he wants to play for the Albanian NT, while his younger brother Granit Xhaka plays for the Swiss NT.

Swiss Super League Matchday 26:
FC Zürich vs FC Basel 1893
FC Basel 1893: Sommer; P. Degen, Sauro, Suchy, Aliji; Callà (83. Stocker), Diaz, Serey Die (70. Elneny), Frei; Sio (58. Xhaka), Streller.
FC Zürich: da Costa; Philippe Koch (19. Raphael Koch), Kecojevic, Djimsiti; Buff; Pedro, Rikan, Chiumento, Benito; Etoundi (69. Kajevic), Gavranovic (81. Sadiku).
Goals:
Which goals?
FT - FC Zürich 0:0 FC Basel 1893
Considering that this is supposed to be a big, hard-fought rivalry, today's match looked more like a case of bad versus terrible (or as we say a bit more colourful in German "Not gegen Elend", literally: "wretchedness versus misery") in nasty weather, a thick uncomfortable wet snow:
As FCZ played with only 10 for the last 30 minutes, I had a déjà vu of October 2012:
In the whole match there were only two highlights: A beautiful save by Yann Sommer and a clean sheet for him.

Today's EL match between FC Basel 1893 and FC Valencia will be a match behind closed doors due to crowd trouble in Salzburg - or as we say in German a "Geisterspiel" (literally: a "ghost match"):

Well, but that's not Basel's problemiftikhar wrote:Watched the match highlights yesterday. Valencia were absolutely scandalous in front of the Basel goal.

"In 5 EL matches, Yann Sommer only allowed one goal against."
Now, in one EL match, Yann Sommer allowed five goals...

Re: FC Basel
And still he was the MotM for Basel. Without him the result would have been in the double digits and Basel would never have reached extra time.
They have to thank Marcelo Diaz and Gaston Sauro for getting sent off for stupidity so that they had to play 9 vs 11 when they were already totally exhausted. I'll add the match info ASAP.

Re: FC Basel
EL 2013/14, Quarter Final (Second Leg)
Valencia CF vs FC Basel 1893
Valencia CF: Guaita; Joao Pereira (110. Piatti), Fuego, Mathieu (81. Ricardo Costa), Bernat; Feghouli, Parejo, Keita, Cartabia (76. Jonas); Paco Alcacer, Vargas.
FC Basel 1893: Sommer; Xhaka, Schär, Sauro, Safari (116. Embolo); Elneny, Frei, Serey Die; David Degen (61. Aliji), Diaz; Delgado (53. Sio).
Very good refs today
Goals:
38.) 1:0 - Paco Alcacer (assist by Joao Pereira)
42.) 2:0 - Eduardo Vargas (assist by Cartabia)
70.) 3:0 - Paco Alcacer (assist by Eduardo Vargas)
112.) 4:0 - Paco Alcacer (assist by Piatti)
118.) 5:0 - Juan Bernat
FT - Valencia CF 5:0 FC Basel 1893 (AET)
I've still not recovered fully from the Valencia - Basel match. The Basel side was so bad today, only Yann Sommer excelled, but even his heroics couldn't overcome the total failure of the rest of his team.
Not amused that he brought Basel into extra time to have it all squandered
With D.Degen, Schär, and Sio I wasn't even sure what they were playing, as football it wasn't.
And don't let me start about the sheer stupidity of Marcelo Diaz and Gaston Sauro for acting like braindead ijits getting themselves sent-off when Basel were already completely exhausted in the first place.
So after the 3:0 in the Joggeli in the first leg, the 5:0 in the Mestalla means that Valencia CF proceeds to the semi final of the Europe League 2013/14 with 5:3 on aggregate.
