Very good refs today

Goals:
38.) 1:0 - Paco Alcacer (assist by Joao Pereira)
42.) 2:0 - Eduardo Vargas (assist by Cartabia)
70.) 3:0 - Paco Alcacer (assist by Eduardo Vargas)
112.) 4:0 - Paco Alcacer (assist by Piatti)
118.) 5:0 - Juan Bernat

FT - Valencia CF 5:0 FC Basel 1893 (AET)

I've still not recovered fully from the Valencia - Basel match. The Basel side was so bad today, only Yann Sommer excelled, but even his heroics couldn't overcome the total failure of the rest of his team.

FC Basel - Page 13 Ys11
Not amused that he brought Basel into extra time to have it all squandered

With D.Degen, Schär, and Sio I wasn't even sure what they were playing, as football it wasn't.

And don't let me start about the sheer stupidity of Marcelo Diaz and Gaston Sauro for acting like braindead ijits getting themselves sent-off when Basel were already completely exhausted in the first place.

So after the 3:0 in the Joggeli in the first leg, the 5:0 in the Mestalla means that Valencia CF proceeds to the semi final of the Europe League 2013/14 with 5:3 on aggregate.

I think they fielded what appeared their back-up team. You know I don't follow much beyond your updates, but at least 5-6 of starting team aren't regular starters. Is it due to injury & suspension or have they kept key players for League campaign (where they are having close competition)!!!

Basel currently have 8 regular starters injured (Arlind Ajeti, Philipp Degen, Ivanov, Streller, Stocker, Voser), suspended (Suchy) or cup-tied (Calla). Murat Yakin had to take a handful U19 players along to have a full team due to that.

Swiss Super League Matchday 29:

FC Sion vs FC Basel 1893

FC Sion: Vanins; Rüfli, Ndoye, Ferati, Pa Modou; Kololli (53. Assifuah),  Fedele (77. Herea), Perrier (24. Basha); Christofi, Vidosic; Itaperuna.

FC Basel 1893: Sommer; Xhaka, Sauro, Suchy, Aliji; Callà (76. Safari), Elneny, Frei (72. Embolo), Serey Die, Sio ; Streller (82. Schär).

Goals:
71.) 0:1 - Fabian Frei (PK)

FT - FC Sion 0:1 FC Basel 1893

Rather boring match. The only fun things were the stress test Rüfli made with Sio's shorts that lead to the foul penalty and the fact that Yann Sommer put on the captain's armband the wrong way (the top of "Baslerstab" pointed downwards).

Swiss Super League Matchday 30:

FC Basel 1893 vs FC Zürich

FC Basel 1893:  Sommer; Aliji, Sauro, Suchy, Safari (77. Dünki); Elneny, Serey Die; Callà (63. Stocker), Frei, Sio; Streller (12. Delgado).

FC Zürich: da Costa; Philippe Koch, Kecojevic, Benito; Buff; Schönbächler, Chiumento (75. Chikhhaoui), Rikan, Pedro Henrique; Gavranovic (90. Texeira), Sadiku (81. Etoundi).

Goals:
08.) 1:0 - Giovanni Sio (assist by Marco Streller)
65.) 2:0 - Valentin Stocker (assist by Serey Die)
71.) 3:0 - Giovanni Sio (assist by Naser Aliji)
73.) 3:1 - Pedro Henrique
78.) 3:2 - Yassine Chikhaoui  (assist by Mario Gavranovic)
88.) 4:2 - Mohmed Elneny (rebound after Fabian Frei's weak PK)

FT - FC Basel 1893 4:2 FC Zürich

A very entertaining and hard-fought match. The first goal against was a great effort by Pedro Henrique that gave Yann Sommer no chance, and the second goal came after a somewhat chaotic situation where the scorer was not easily to see from the GK perspective. The match finished with a red card and foul penalty for Basel. As GC were steamrolled 5:0 in Thun, Basel now lead the table with 4 points.

Yann Sommer really hates to get goals against...

Swiss Cup 2013/14, Final

FC Zürich vs FC Basel 1893

The Swiss Cup Final took place at the Stade de Suisse in Bern, 21 April 2014, 14:00 GMT+2 and finally I have calmed down enough to write a short summary.

FC Zürich: da Costa; Djimsiti, Kecojevic, Texeira; Buff (86. Mariani); Philippe Koch, Chiumento, Chikhaoui, Rikan; Etoundi (91. Sadiku), Gavranovic.

FC Basel - Page 13 Fcz10

FC Basel 1893: Sommer; Aliji, Suchy, Sauro, Safari; Elneny, Serey Die; Callà (70. Arlind Ajeti), Frei (60. Delgado), Stocker (106. Diaz); Sio.

FC Basel - Page 13 Fcb12

Goals:
100.) 1:0 - Mario Gavranovic (assist by Texeira)
115.) 2:0 - Mario Gavranovic (assist by Chikhaoui)

FT - FC Zürich 2:0 FC Basel 1893 (AET)

This match was absolutely decided by a wrong decision of the referee. While the sending off of Gastón Sauro in the 65th minute was fully deserved, Basel managed to get into extra time with 10 players due to one or the other great save by Yann Sommer.

Suddenly, in the 99th minute, Giovanni Sio (who already was on a yellow) was tugged back at his shirt by a Zürich player in the penalty box and fell down when the match was still a scoreless draw. But instead of awarding Basel a rightful penalty, the ref decided it was a dive and thus booked Sio, leading to his sending off and Basel only having 9 players left.

While Basel still were agitated by the wrong decision, Zürich used the luck of the moment and started a lightning fast attack that led to the 1:0 only seconds after Sio left the pitch. With two man down and desperately trying to equalize, Zürich then went up another goal after a counter.

After the match, the referee admitted he made a mistake, but of course then it was to late and FC Zürich won the Swiss Cup 2014.

FC Basel - Page 13 Ys-cup10
Yann Sommer protests the red-yellow given wrongly to Giovanni Sio for diving, while he was in fact fouled by a Zürich player.

Well, the B-Team tried to fight until Gaston Sauro and Marcelo Diaz had their brainfarts that got them sent off.

As a matter of fact, with Sauro it wasn't just a brainfart, it was more his usual stupidity as he did virtually the same in the Swiss Cup Final...

Well, that Basel lost the Valencia match was only the fault of themselves. The Swiss Cup loss was worse as that was due to bad refereeing.

And by the way, why shouldn't Valencia pull the same stunt against Sevilla as against Basel? This time they are "only" 0:2 down. ^^

But it's Sevilla. Laughing They're above us in the league for a reason. Emery's legit as well. Speaking of bad referreeing, Sevilla's first goal should't have been allowed. Dat Karma Sad

Valencia has nothing to play for in the League. We should go all-out for the return-leg and (if possible) the Cup.

Swiss Super League Matchday 31:

FC Basel 1893 vs Grasshopper Club

FC Basel 1893: Sommer; Voser, Suchy, Frei, Safari; Elneny, Serey Die (78. Callà); Diaz (53. Ajeti), Delgado (67. Embolo), Stocker; Sio.

Grasshopper Club: Bürki; Jahic, Dingsdag, Grichting (70. Steven Lang); Salatic, Abrashi; Michael Lang, Gashi (84. Feltscher), Pavlovic; Ngamukol (61. Caio), Dabbur.

Goals:
36.) 0:1 - Shkelzen Gashi (assist by Pavlovic)
44.) 1:1 - Valentin Stocker (assist by Matías Delgado)

FT - FC Basel 1893 1:1 Grasshopper Club

For the fourth time in a row, Basel and GC finish with a 1:1 draw. Today it was a really abysmal experience, though, as the Basel defense ran around like a bunch of headless chicken, while the GC attackers managed to miss several 100% chances. On the plus side, Basel are still leading the league with 4 points ahead of GC, so they are still on course for the CL group stage next year (as the Swiss Champion this times qualifies directly).

Swiss Super League Matchday 32:

FC St. Gallen vs FC Basel 1893

FC St. Gallen: Herzog; Nushi, Besle, Russo, Mutsch;  Nater, Demiri; Wüthrich (62. Cavusevic), Mathys, Vitkieviez (73. Rodriguez); Karanovic.

FC Basel 1893: Sommer; Schär (67. Arlind Ajeti), Suchy, Sauro; Voser (79. Philipp Degen), Elneny, Delgado (70. Embolo), Diaz, Safari; Sio, Stocker.

Goals:
21.) 0:1 - Valentin Stocker (assist by Matías Delgado)
37.) 0:2 - Matías Delgado (assist by Behrang Safari)
56.) 0:3 - Valentin Stocker (assist by Kay Voser)

FT - FC St. Gallen 0:3 FC Basel 1893

Not really exciting match, plus the ref had a bad day again. The first goal was scored after a handball and Safari who assisted the second goal should have been given his marching orders just some moments before. On the other hand, St.Gallen wasn't more dangerous than a soft breeze and so Yann Sommer must have feld bored too death.

What happened? In the match the day before, Grasshopper Club Zürich got steamrolled 0:5, and so the Basel players concluded they wouldn't need to win either and still lead the table. So the Basel team went into collective hibernation and BSC Young Boys said "Thank you", and won the match. *That* happened.

Yann Sommer was voted "Man of the Season 2013/14" of FC Basel 1893. As he was elected "Man of Match 28 times in this season (with 60 matches played), the result comes as no real surprise.
