Can Messi break Muller's all-time european record, most official goals by a player for a single Club in a top league.?

Note: Gerd Muller's record for Bayern Munich 573 goals in 616 official games (via rsssf).

Its very very difficult to reach Muller's... but you never know, Messi is full of surprises

He needs to score 248+ goals for Barcelona to reach 500+ goals... He's almost 25, it depend on 3 things:
- How many years will Messi play for Barca?
- If he stay fit and away from injuries...
- If he stay motivated...


Let's say 8 more years?
So he needs an average of 31+ goals a season for the next 8 years to reach 500+ goals for Barcelona.

2012-13 (25 years old): 60+
2013-2014 (26 years old): 55+
2014-2015 (27 years old): 50+
2015-2016 (28 years old): 45+
2016-2017 (29 years old): 40+
2017-2018 (30 years old): 30+
2018-2019 (31 years old): 25+
2019-2020 (32 years old): 20+

at this rate for example: in 8 years +325 goals ===> Total of 577+ goals for Barcelona at 32 years old

Well, Messi broke a lot of records already, and to quote the legendary Gerd Müller himself: "Records are there to be broken".

Unless he gets an injury, he will.

If he can't, nobody can.

The better question is when will he break it not if

In today's soccer it's really hard to break that record... I doubt he will, but he'll get to 400! I know for sure that c.ronaldo won't get even close to messi!

Hes done well to stay consistent for 4 years now. Hes played 50+ games for 4 seasons in a row + international tournaments in the summer, for a player that does so much running and gets fouled a lot that might cause a backlash of injuries in future. I guess we will see, also over the next 8 years the barcelona team will change a lot so it will be interesting to see if messi's goal output remains the same

Better question actually might be, should he break it?...I think Leo needs to have more help in front of goal so it doesn't have to be a solo act out there

If Leo has more help it won't make him score less, only that the team will score more.

Gerd Muller scored 41 goals in 34 games for Bayern in (Regionalliga Süd) in 1964-65.
Total: 573 goals in 616 games between 1964 and 1979.

That means; Messi needs 281+ goals to beat Muller's record..

he needs an average of 35+ goals for the next 8 years...

I' am still not sure about the accurate number, but for sure its between 521 and 532.

I love Barcelona, but I am also a huge Messi fan and as a Messi fan of course he should break it so he is in the books for a long time, not just a title etc.
