no 4 is Rossiter
no 6 is Phillips
no 7 is Canos
no 8 is Chirivella
no 10 Kent
Kent looks head and shoulders above these boys. No place for Wilson sadly in this side.

Re: Youth and Reserve Thread
I am going to post some old highlights of few youth games. Seems like no one posted those here before, so let me do the honours
Liverpool U18 3 - 0 Bolton U18
scorers: Marsh, Sinclair, Canos
CL U19s: Liverpool FC 3-2 Real Madrid
CL U19s: Liverpool FC 3-0 Basel
Some of these are very old but at least I got some view of our kids playing.
I will post more as I find them.

Re: Youth and Reserve Thread
Liverpool-Middlesborough, 4-1
U18s: Liverpool-Derby County, 5-1
In the most recent league match, Liverpool faced a strong Middlesborough side that had been 6 points clear at the top of the table. Though playing well and winning matches, the U18s hadn't faced a truly tough test in a while, and by all means this was it. But that pressure did not impact the lads at all, and they breezed past the league leaders with a comprehensive 4-1 victory.
Sergi Canos opened the scoring with a calm finish off an Ojo assist for his 10th league goal of the campaign. Later, Harry Wilson scored his 7th and 8th goals of the season, one off a direct free-kick and the second from another lovely assist by Ojo. Ojo also missed a penalty and scored a quite absurd goal, beating two defenders and curling past the keeper. Two assists and a goal for Ojo, who is fast becoming one of the Liverpool's brightest shining stars.
The attacking talent is plentiful, but Ojo's physical abilities are at another level to Ryan Kent's and Harry Wilson's. These three, along with Canos and Sinclair, round out a very exciting quintet of attacking talent. Jordan Rossiter also hit the post in this match, and the end result is quite stunning considering how proficient Middlesborough have been

Re: Youth and Reserve Thread
When will some of these lads make it to the senior team??? Spearing & Kelly were false dawns. Not sure if Flanagan can/will recover from such a lengthy lay-off. Wisdom doesn't seem to have what it takes either.

Re: Youth and Reserve Thread
Canos, Ojo, Wilson, Sinclair and Rossiter will all get stints with the first team at some point. I am confident of this. Down the line I could also see Phillips and Chirivella getting shots.

Re: Youth and Reserve Thread
I disagree about Sinclair. Personally don't think he'll make it with us or even be given a chance. As far as Canos, like Suso he'll get an initial shot but I don't think he'll make it. Neither seem to have that sort of special talent teenagers need to catch the eye at big clubs.
I agree about Rossiter, Ojo, and Wilson. They are very highly rated by the club and the academy and I've been impressed most of the time I've seen the 3 of them play.
But of course they are all kids and tomorrow we can wake up and one of them turns into Fowler or another one has a career ending injury. Anything can happen.

Re: Youth and Reserve Thread
Getting a 'shot' isn't good enough. Players like Kelly, Spearing, Flanagan, Robinson, Wisdom, Pacheco, Suso,Teixeira, Cody, Yasil all got their 'shot'. Yet, they have already left of their future is undecided.
Not to mention the 5-6 players we release every year.
And yet, we keep buying young players for the first team every year.

Re: Youth and Reserve Thread
Sterling is a first-team regular now and Ibe looks set to be.
But I agree with Ifty to a point, that our policy of signing young players has been unnecessarily extensive when you look at how little chances they are given even when showing promise. What makes this worse is that we've been buying quite a lot of players for the first-team who have ended up showing no more ability than some of our youth players:
Lovren - I don't think he's better than Wisdom or Coates.
Alberto - Better than Suso, Teixeira?
Markovic - Better than Ibe?
Looking at our transfer & youth policy, Rodgers strikes me as average at best judging players' ability.

Canos has been better than Wilson this year and probably our best youth player besides Ojo and maybe even including him.

Re: Youth and Reserve Thread
I believe our youth structure/philosophy needs to be overhauled. It should be more decisive while it's quite speculative ATM.Art Morte wrote:Sterling is a first-team regular now and Ibe looks set to be.

After 1-2 years in Academy (or upon reaching 18) either a players should be released/sold (if he isn't good enough) or sent on loan where he can be observed/tested in competitive situation.
If the loan period shows promise then induct him into the team. If he isn't good enough, sell/release him.

Re: Youth and Reserve Thread
Kent has a lot of talent also but I don't think he's quite at the same level as an Ojo, Canos or Wilson TBH. Also he doesn't turn 19 until November, eh! That said with the right work ethic he could eclipse all three of them (though Canos in particular seems quite driven).

Re: Youth and Reserve Thread
Liverpool U21 vs Chelsea U21, seemed like very good game. Wilson scores penalty, won by Sinclair. Sinclair himself scores a goal. Quick thoughts,
Onlahon seems to be very sharp midfielder, I will keep an eye on him. Also, Wilson, Canos, Sinclair, all seem to be talented but difficult to see if anyone will get chances in first team soon.

Re: Youth and Reserve Thread
I think all Youth/Reserve players who
1. are over 18
2. have impressed so far
3. have spent two years at the academy
Should be sent on loan where they can play competitive games with certain amount of regularity. I don't think keeping these players at the academy with help their development any more.

Re: Youth and Reserve Thread
I don't think it's a bad time to revive this thread.
Kent has been extremely impressive early on. Maybe a bit too early to count him out behind the likes of Ojo, Wilson and Canos. He's a lot like Ibe but doesn't hold on to the ball as much and makes better decisions. Not as powerful obviously, and younger. He's still worth watching and apparently could go out on loan.
https://vine.co/v/erUJIpaeZ9v
Anyway, surprised a little bit that Ojo and even Chirivella are getting so much hype and still not much talk of Wilson. For my money Wilson was better than Ojo last season (and any other attacker u21) and is still quite young. Maybe it's his stamina/physique that needs work though as the Championship can be quite physical.
Will be an interesting season for a lot of youth players at Liverpool especially with all the buying going on. Rossiter, Chirivella, Ojo, Kent, Wilson, and Yesil (who has started to really get back into form going back to the end of last season) I reckon will look to make leaps. I think there will be a lot of pressure on guys like Allen, Lucas and Markovic this season to really step up and perform or get overtaken by better youth products (though I suspect this might be Lucas' last season with Liverpool regardless).

Re: Youth and Reserve Thread
Kent is way ahead of Canos in development in the eyes of our coaches. Which is why he's getting minutes with the first team and Canos isn't.
I think he's got more minutes than Wilson even, probably sine his body is more ready than Wilson.

Re: Youth and Reserve Thread
I'm not pessimist, in fact I'm a great fan and advocate of youth system and promoting players from youth ranks. However, last few seasons I have experienced far too many false-dawns (for a variety of reasons). Still, I'm optimistic and eager to see 3-4 players from youth team becoming seniors in next 2-3 years.
