The Journey Continues

I have said a lot about us in recent weeks, mostly bad but some good as well. I am not sure what to say anymore at this point. It's fair to say that this has been one of our most inconsistent season in the past few years. We started a bit slow, then we turned it on, and then we dipped down to a new low. But then we won the Derby last week and secured qualification for the next Round of the Champions League. However the train tumbled down yet again after a lackluster game against Aston Villa on Saturday evening where we should have won as our next game was 5 times harder. And of course, our next game being tomorrow against Everton at Goodison. Which will be a huge huge battle for us as Everton have been quite brilliant this season and us, not so much. Tomorrow's game is also important for the league positions because Everton are 5th with 21 points and Arsenal 6th with 20. Therefore we can take over Everton with a win or Everton can go 4 points clear of us if they win their game. In any case, with Arsenal resting some key players for this game, and the return of Theo, i think we can be a bit confident about this game. The only problem which may come is the fatigue of Giroud and Cazorla which was evident in the last game.

Tactical Battle

The Obvious threat and the most effective one Everton will pose tomorrow is in the Midfield and the final third. With the return of their Talisman Fellaini, Our shortish and physically weak midfield will be tested for 90 minutes, along with the fact that Fellaini has been a genuine goat threat this season and therefore, Arteta will either have to increase his height for tomorrow, or Arsenal need to deploy tactics which may nullify their main threat. This can be done by keeping the ball most of the time which we can certainly do but don't do much these days. Or we can let Fellaini win the aerial duels but not let everton get the flick ons. Like against west ham for example where Carroll dominated us in the air but it was useless in the end. But of course then you have corners and free kicks which we can't defend atm to save our life. Mirallas is probably their 2nd biggest threat for tomorrow, but if he plays on the left, then it won't matter much since theo and sagna can both pin him and Baines down. Unless they go for counter attacking, then it will be bad.

Team News

The good news for Arsenal is that Walcott is back for tomorrow, along with Wilshere. Both of them are fit and will start tomorrow. No other injuries either.

Fellaini returns from Suspension for Everton, Mirallas and Gibson are back as well.

Match Facts (BBC)

Head-to-head

  • Arsenal are unbeaten in their last 10 Premier League games against Everton (W8, D2) since a 1-0 defeat at Goodison Park in March 2007 when Andrew Johnson scored a stoppage-time winner.
  • This is the 183rd league meeting between the two clubs, all of them in the top division of English football. Arsenal have 90 victories compared to Everton's 54.
  • Arsenal's 6-1 win at Goodison Park in August 2009 was the Toffees' worst home league defeat since 1958.
  • The Gunners have recorded their highest number of Premier League wins (26) and goals (81) against Everton.

Everton

  • Everton have drawn five of their last seven league games (W1, D5, L1).
  • They have not lost at Goodison Park in 10 Premier League matches since a 1-0 defeat by Arsenal in March (W7, D3).
  • The Toffees have conceded 12 goals in their last eight games, failing to keep a clean sheet in that spell.
  • David Moyes's side have scored 15 first-half goals in the league this season, more than any other team. They have also been ahead at half-time on an unrivalled six occasions.

Arsenal

  • Arsenal have recorded their lowest points tally after 13 matches under Arsene Wenger. They last fared worse in 1994, when they had 19 points at the equivalent stage of the season.
  • Nonetheless, they have only been outscored once in the second half of matches this season. They sit second in the 'second-half table' with 26 points, two behind Manchester United.
  • The Gunners are the only team yet to concede in the final 15 minutes of a Premier League match this season.
  • Lukas Podolski is the only player in the Premier League to be substituted in all 13 of his side's matches this season.

Final Words

Well it will be difficult, but Everton are beatable. Don't see why we can't win this game unless the Arsenal of Norwich or Aston Villa show up. obviously.

Hopefully our good record at Goodison continues.

Great Perview RG.

I am really worried about this game, Everton are a hard team especially at home.

The line up looks good Theo will be a big help, and lets hope he can help Giroud score a goal or 2. I think Wenger will rest Gibbs, and Wenger will think twice before making subs.

It will be hard, but the players and fans should be confident about the win.
If we go in this game with a bad feeling, they will overrun us.
If it's a win the morale and standing will be a big plus.

its everton ffs. At the moment they are feelin like they are Barca.... let them come at us (they will not resort into parking the bus). We will win this easily. Kos and Mertesacker need to be on point. I would also play Vermalen as LB

Nice work RG. I'll do the Swansea preview on Saturday as normal. Smile

Both sides in stuttering form and have key men returning tomorrow night - Walcott, Wilshere, Fellaini, Mirallas - should be interesting game.

Last season we won 1-0 thanks to TV's header, and it could have been more, I remember Ramsey wasting a good chance or two, and RVP hitting the post. We need to be strong defensively, particularly in the air against Jelavic and Fellaini.

Sagna v Mirallas, Frenchman needs to be at his best.

Looking forward to it, we need a big improvement on Villa game.

Great work RG

Walcott return is massive boost
if they play highline we will get behind that and cause problems

they probably come to try and press hard after seeing what A.villa did
Fellaini on Arteta

so if Theos pace can force them to retreat they may either drop deeper as a team or risk losing their compactness between the lines
which with no Neville to sit they can be vulnerable to counters as well

Oviedo had good game vs Norwich but he stays close to touchline and Baines doesnt get chance to make overlapping runs as much and comes inside to play give and goes or play early crosses
hopefully Theo will get the better of him

and as RG said collect second balls
i have faith that Per&kos are intelligent enough and have anticipation to deal with Jelavic trademark runs
Whoever starts on Left for them anyway will be kept in Bacs back pocket :coffee:

and as i mentioned they have conceded 7 set piece goals and we scored via corner in last visit(had more than enough open play chances though)
hope we take advantage of that

Bring them on bounce

Wenger is hopeful that talks with Bacary Sagna over a contract extension will reach an amiable conclusion but there was no fresh news over tying Theo Walcott to a long-term deal. Walcott returns for Wednesday's match, but so does Everton's Marouane Fellaini – a player Wenger greatly admires. "Their offensive game turns around him," he said. "He is the target man they look for. He is not a dirty player. He is an intelligent player."

Could he do a job for Arsenal? A mischievous smile, and a single word. "Yes."

Not sure, but he has said that he wants to leave to a bigger club so him joining us is a definite possibility, although a couple of other clubs are interested.

And of course Raptor, Diaby is our mighty saviour, but while he is charging his batteries for what will undoubtedly be the longest and most glory-filled consecutive run of games in the history of top-flight football, I wouldn't mind Fellaini momentarily supporting the Arsenal cannon :coffee:

Relax I doubt we'll be getting Felliani, his price will run upto at least £16-18million considering who's interested in him and Everton's knack of selling at very high fees.

Massive game and already a must win considering where Everton are and how well West Brom are playing. We need to start gaining some ground here. Tactically I'm actually not worried about their leftside because Miralles will find it tough against Sagna and Walcott's presence alone should keep Baines at bay more often than not. Even if Baines does attack, Walcott tracks back very well and we'll hardly see any 2v1 situations on Sagna.

Only threat is Felliani and with such a small sized midfield, we'll need Per to win alot of aerial duels to shut down any emerging attacks right away.

Btw, good stuff RG Thumbs up

Love your previews RG Thumbs up

Arteta will either have to increase his height for tomorrow, or Arsenal need to deploy tactics which may nullify their main threat.

I lol'd.

Anyway, not much to add since most of the important stuff was already mentioned by you folks.

I expect a determined yet intelligent display with endless running and last ditch tackles. bounce

Great preview RG..
Yeah.. Everton is beatable.. But we made things more difficult for this with last weeks performance.. If we could have won that game vs Villa, we could have played under less pressure.. And Everton has gone back a little from the form they were showing at the beginning of the season.. So it is not a bad time to play away against them..
As said our problem will be in the midfield.. The strength of Arsenal was always the midfield.. But now.. Even with quality players like Cazorla, Arteta and Wilshere our midfield looks ineffective.. We need more support from the wide midfielders and fullbacks in our passing game..
I hope it will be a hard fought narrow victory for us in the end which will revive our season..

The magnitude of a win here would be massive for us.

Fellaini is worth that price considering how much we supposedly have in our bank :coffee:

And the rest Laughing he won't go for any less than 20m and he's only played like this since he's been deployed as a battering ram targetman.

Everton won just 1 of last 7 league games. Haven't kept a league clean sheet in 9 weeks. #AFC won 4 of last 5 visits to #EFC scoring 14.

Rotating Sagna&Verminator with Jenks and Gibbs. They started against Villa, SV will start tonight and JG will most likely start on the weekend.

Just keeping them fresh.
