Short Film Ideas

Hello guys, I'm a media student in my final year of Gymnasium. I need to make a short film in about 4-7 minutes, but I have no idea of what the film should be about. As this is a very important assignment, I would be happy for any inspiration you could provide me with.

So soon you will be on one of those load buses drunk at midday and then later jumping naked into some Danish water fountain somewhere?



Anyway, in 7 minutes you cant tell much of a story, so maybe something with some comedy. Perhaps something real life, creating a situation with some comedy...hidden cam sort of thing.

Yeah exactly, I will be done in the end of June
Yeah I know 7 minutes isn't a lot, but in order for me to get a good grade I need to make a movie with a good story, that will show all my prowess in terms of Cinematic techniques and storytelling

Do a post apocalyptic world. In a short movie I feel it would be the best since you won't have to introduce a main setting or anything with the time frame given.

If you can shoot the film in some sort of ruined building or a somewhere isolated it would be even better.

I wouldn't NOT recommend a zombie apocalypse, something more to do with a virus/disease. That way you won't need costumes or make up for the cast.

So basically a group of survivors in a virus ridden world where they are being hunted by smugglers or something.

Thanks for the suggestion Messiah, sounds like a good idea to start with, of course I will need to polish the plot a bit, since there isn't that much time to set-up relations to the characters, so the plot needs to be actiondriven right from the start

When is it due? Maybe I could think of some more stuff. As a kid I used to think of movies I could possibly write myself. I wouldn't mind helping to polish the plot and giving more ideas.

It is due in the end of April, we will have our first module tomorrow, where we will work on ideas and scripts. Would be much appreciated, I will talk to my group tomorrow and hear what they think about the idea so far

Sounds good. Keep us up to date in this thread with everything. I'm sure GL can help you possibly win an Oscar in the short film category.

This seems like a big project so think carefully about how you do it. Best thing would be to do a pros and cons of the potential idea and see if that idea is actually worth developing further or it's just good on the outside but hollow from the inside.

With that out of the way, the actual idea should be something unique and different from the other students as well as maybe different from past year students as well if it can. If your idea is original and stands out, then the more attention it will get. Unless it's poor which i am sure it wouldn't be

One idea i have is doing your short but a silent film. Something which has an element of emotions and real life scenario. Therefore how about doing a short film on a life of a mute/autistic/some other disability person.

You don't have to get someone to do it, you can read information on it on the internet and play it out yourself. Like a normal day for that person or a Diary even.

However i would stress that the best idea always or usually comes from within yourself. So just take your time and think about it carefully

There is some good advices from my teacher:
Few characters
Only one location
There needs to be a conflict that needs to be solved
The plot needs to be clear
Avoid dialogue

That sounds familiar. I think i have done exactly that kind of thing back at high school lol

How about an Anti bullying video ? or is that too common ?

Here's one that I got from that free short film idea site. short film idea with no 's' in ideas i think. (if anyone knows the site, please link). I think it's pretty cool and can be done in a very short time...

I think it was a very interesting Story, I would like to recommend if there is going to be no speaking, perhaps background music throughout to help portray the emotions of the character. Many short films use this well if they can find the right music.

Good idea, let me be one of the 'rastlers. Gotta get myself out there incase a WWE talent scout is hiding in your classroom watching the movie.

How about a WWE film.

You could take some inspiration from short anime movies like 5cm/second. Something like boy meets girl, they become friends, deeper feelings arouse but just then they are separated from each other lol that would actually be horrible but still could watch those short movies like 5cm/second or Garden Of Words.

My idea is to basically debut him as a commissioner/GM/authority figure. Maybe throw in the odd occasional match. So heading into SummerSlam, it’s very likely that Ambrose will face Rollins on the show. I’m guessing the MITB briefcase will be on the line. Now my winner for that match would be Ambrose. The main event then is Cena vs Lesnar of course. The match could maybe be a gimmick match. Maybe a last man standing match? Cena, would win that match. Now wait a minute… Cena wouldn’t win clean. It would be a controversial finish with Lesnar’s foot being on the rope or something. After the bell rings, Lesnar annihilates him.

Then the inevitable happens and Ambrose runs out to a huge pop to cash it in. The match starts and goes on for a while. Cena can barely stand and it’s clear his hurt. However from out of nowhere he hits the AA, Ambrose kicks out. Ambrose then hits his finisher, however before the ref can count, Rollins appears and pulls the ref out. Kane and Rollins then attack Ambrose as Triple H comes out and barks orders at them to continue attacking. When suddenly some sort of thunder effect hits and the arena goes dark. When the lights come back on, Sting’s in the ring!

Sting takes out both Kane and Rollins, possibly with a steel chair. Ambrose then gets up, hits his finisher again. Ref crawls back in and makes the count. New WWEWHC, Dean Ambrose. Sting stares down at Triple H as Ambrose celebrates. The following night on RAW, Sting comes out and say’s the WWE board of directors have appointed him the commissioner of WWE, due to the authority abusing their powers etc.

Now why Ambrose? Well I think he’s one of the most talented in WWE and there’s no one better currently. Reigns, yes, he’s over, but so is Ambrose. Plus Ambrose is superior to Reigns at everything. Long term, the storyline would see Ambrose and Reigns aligning with Sting. Triple H possibly convincing the Wyatt’s to align with him. Reigns turning heel on Sting and joining the authority, then Bray would turn face and align with Sting.
