VfL Wolfsburg - Olympique Lyonnais - CL Final 2013

Today in London at the Stamford Bridge, German Double winners VfL Wolfsburg will meet French record champions (7 times between 2007 and 2013) and CL winners 2011 and 2012, Olympique Lyonnais for the final of the Champions League 2012/13.

The French ladies are touted the "FC Barcelona of women football" and considered the heavy favourites. VfL Wolfsburg who only newly became a force in Germany stated that of course they are the underdogs, but they won't play a 10-0-0 nonetheless.

BTW, two of the German gals play with ruptured ligaments in their ankles as they don't want to miss this match no matter what. Take note, Mario Götze!

Naw. I'm actually torn whom I'd like to see take the CL. Bayern would deserve it after the two final losses, but I'm from the Ruhr Area, so I have a weak spot for Kloppo and his boys, too.

But this is about VfL Wolfsburg - they almost got the 2:0 if it wasn't for the French GK...

Well, Lyon *are* considered the FC Barcelona of women football for a reason ^^

Germany is the first nation to win the Champions League for men and for women in the same season (Women: Wolfsburg. Men: Bayern/Dortmund).

But that's only because Bayern messed up against Inter in 2010 when Turbine Potsdam won the CL (against Lyon, too, btw), or we'd have made it then already.

BTW, in 2011 and 2012, Lyon won against German opposition (Turbine Potsdam, 1.FFC Frankfurt). And in 2006, the women had an all-German final already. So our gals have been a bit more convincing in the CL since its inception than the guys

Gutted, had money on Lyon to win, me and my luck . Lyon picked the worst time to lose a match. Anyway, congratulations to Wolfsburg.

Why in the world was Rapinoe subbed off at halftime? Silly decision, that.

Well, Lyon were actually better and attacked, but they only rarely could breach the Wolfsburg defense and if they did so, Alisa Vetterlein usually was in the way of the shots.



I'm a bit sad that the penalty call was highly dubious - I think Lyon didn't deserve to be defeated by a ref call. On the other hand, Wolfsburg did have some good chances that they missed, too, so it wasn't fully undeserved as they fought valiantly against the 'invincible Lyonnais'.

They're a very good team and in the French league. So that record shouldn't surprise anyone. Frauen Bundesliga is by far the strongest Women's league. They wouldn't do that there.

Indeed. The Women's UEFA Cup / Champions League was so far staged 12 times since 2002, and while Olympique Lyon was absolutely dominant for the last 4 years, the Bundesliga managed to snatch 7 of the CLs so far with 4 different teams:



(The old UEFA-Cup was basically the Champions league as the women only have one European club tournament.)
