Re: The Official Summer Transfer Rumours Thread
when asked in Jakarta whether they will be making an improved £40million bid for Suarez, Wenger refused to discuss the chase.
He said: 'As you know the transfer period demands secrets and confidentiality, so I can't answer the question.'
Away from transfer speculation, Wenger added: 'We are very happy to be here. We've never been here before so we want to give happiness to all our fans here. I'm sure we can leave here with great memories.
'I don't know much about the Indonesian team, but I expect them to make us suffer! Because Asian players are quick, agile and mobile and we are at the start of the season.'

@bbcsport_david: Arsenal pursuing Higuain & Suarez in hope of signing one. No fee agreed on Higuain, probably need to pay £40m release clause for Suarez #afc
I thought there wasn't a £40mil release clause.

Apparently the 40m clause is that if a club bids 40m, Liverpool will have to inform Suarez and his agent about it. It's not a straight up release/buy out clause.

No, normally the club is helpless and can't do anything but to sell him.

Re: The Official Summer Transfer Rumours Thread
That falls in line with the Mirror's story of Liverpool being willing to negotiate if Arsenal upped their bid to £40mil.
It's a crazy amount of money, though.

40m and no more for Suarez. I'd also take that deal instead of taking Higuain for 30m

Re: The Official Summer Transfer Rumours Thread
i think suarez's talent warrants 40m but, I could easily see it being a disaster for us. The first time we break the bank in the modern era for a top level target and he disgraces himself/the club with his actions and we have to get rid of him....
imagine us dropping 40m on him, he comes, screws up and we're forced to get rid of him. No way we'll get what we paid or close to it if he doesnt behave

If Arsenal got Bernard, that would mean Cazorla is no longer the li'lest playmaker.

doesn't Bernard play on Theo's side meaning either Theo gets benched or he plays CF

One of Theo's sticking points before signing a new contract was to be given more opportunities up front. However, we made the run in so difficult for ourselves that we had to depend on Giroud, or Poldi (given his prior experience in that role) when Giroud was suspended.
Poldi's desire to return to a central role is also well documented, especially given that Cazorla has to move wide for accommodating Wilshere in an advanced role.
The current options of the right include Gervais and Oxlade, apart from Theo. If Theo were to move to a central role, or if Gervinho is moved on, that does open up a spot on the right.
The pre-season tour will see us experiment a bit with our options, before squad depth issues are identified for later in the transfer market. This is my guess.

Re: The Official Summer Transfer Rumours Thread
It's my understanding that Bernard can play on either flank or in the middle. I can't where he'd be best since I've only seen him play at club level once and at international level two or three times.
It's a packed area of the team, though, at senior and at youth level. I'd be very surprised if another midfielder arrived, especially for as much as 25mil euros.

Given our attempts to sign a striker this summer, I doubt we're considering Walcott or Podolski as serious options for the lone strikers role.

There is no doubt that we need additions in that spot. Chamakh was our 'back-up' last season and we know how that went. I thought about this even as I was posting my previous post which you quoted.
Fact is, be it Rooney/Suarez/Jovetic/Higuain/Lewandowski/Gomez/Villa/...... (I lost track of who else we were linked with), each of them is a quality upgrade - not just another numerical option.
Yes, we are one short in that department, given that both Theo and Poldi are also options on the wing. But the emphasis of a new striker should be on the additional quality, which is missing when Giroud has an off day or is out suspended/injured. We had to turn to Theo/Poldi/Gervais in these situations. The idea is, buy a good enough striker and rotate with Giroud, so that Theo/Poldi can be options for a rainy day.
