The 2013-14 Prediction Thread

Yes, it's that time of year again. We've still a month and a half to go until the season kicks off at home to Hull, but just to lay the groundwork and remind everyone of the rules, everyone's favorite thread makes a triumphal early return




Format:

• Correct scoreline at FT = 3 points
• Correct result (win, lose, or draw) at FT = 1 point
• Correct goalscorer(s) = 1 point each; maximum of 2






EXAMPLE:

Prediction: 2-1 Chelsea; Mata & Fellaini

Result:

↓

3 points for correct scoreline + 1 point for correct result + 1 point for 1 correct goalscorer = 5 points

Rules:

• Predictions must be in by the scheduled time of kickoff. Any predictions entered after will be disqualified.
• You may change your vote as many times as you'd like BEFORE kickoff. Any changes after will result in disqualification from that match
• Scorelines on matches that go over the usual 90 minutes (CL ties) will be counted for what they read after FT + ET.
• As soon as each match kicks off, I will post a comment declaring all predicting closed. This way anyone late will know when the cut-off has occurred as well as ensure that the person with the last prediction in the thread can't edit it during or after the match without it indicating so at the bottom of their post.

I've included everyone in the Chelsea section in the preliminary table. If anyone currently on it would like not/does not intend to take part, say so and I'll remove you from the list. Likewise, any frequenters from the General section who wish to participate, indicate so and I'll add your name to the leaderboard.

We'll also have, just as last season, special bonus predictions that will be added up at season's-end and added to your points total in the table to determine the final standings. Each will be worth 2 points, and must be submitted by September 1st at midnight, BST. They can be submitted anytime between now and that date, but I'd recommend we all waited until at least the last week, if not day, of the transfer window to make them so we know where the squad stands for the season and also will have gotten a chance to observe the team in the 3 or 4 games it'll play before the closing date.




Answer the following questions along with their corresponding numbers:

2. Who will be the scorer of Chelsea's 2013/14 Goal of the Season?
3. Who will Chelsea's Highest Goalscorer in all competitions be?

Agreed, 2 points come the end of the season will make little difference in terms of the final result.

That's the point. Why should someone who's, say, 10 or 15 points off the pace over the course of a season be able to leapfrog someone else who performed far better than them over a 9-month stretch just because they guessed 1 or 2 questions right?

So the race is not over till the very end.

It would be like saying the team who wins the FA Cup gets to take the 4th Champions League spot for stringing together 2 or 3 results over the team who earned a 4th-place finish over a 9-month long stretch. It wouldn't be fair.

Oh I know, I'm just trying to explain my reasoning.


Take for instance last season. You far outperformed Barrett who went on a few several-month-long sabbaticals from the site throughout the course of the season, and you finished 19 points ahead of him. Had he gotten 2 of those question right that you set at 10 points each, he could have finished ahead of you in the standings. Would that have been fair?


The only reason it didn't really affect things too much last season was because there were such large gaps between just about everyone participating in it.

Which means everyone has to up their game next season.  

Also, If anyone has any problems with How Shed is running it, Come see me and we can sort it out. I doubt there will be any problems which is why I let him run the thread this season.

The only thing I've changed at all since last season is the bonus predictions being worth 2 points instead of 10 and that I'm going to start posting a "CLOSED" comment as soon as the referee blows the whistle for kick-off.


But yes, if anyone has any questions, complaints or otherwise, post them here and we can sort them out. This is OUR thread, not mine.

Im happy with it being only 2 points, I was just suggesting more cos its a special prediction and there are only four + its like a combined whole season prediction.

I was trying to think of a 5th one but couldn't  


That way it would have been a possible 10 points you could gain which I think would have been an ideal amount. Not too much that it would unfairly affect your final standing and could still give you a boost at season's-end but not so little that it would make no difference at all.

I was thinking about that at the time but decided against it.

I was also considering:


• How many players will join the club in January? (but decided that was too guesswork-y)
• How many trophies will the club win this season?
• Who will the manager be on the last day of the season? ()




I guess I could always add Players' Player now, even though I do think it's complete shot-in-the-dark.
