Lichtsteiner: 'Totti wrong about Juve'

Stephan Lichtsteiner fired up tomorrow’s Juventus-Roma by insisting “Francesco Totti is wrong – we are the better team.”

The Scudetto showdown kicks off in Turin on Sunday at 19.45 GMT, click here for a match preview.

“On an individual basis, one against one, we are better than Juve, but they are better as a team,” said Totti.

“The difference is that they have known each other for a while, and they’ve won which helps you to win.”

However, Bianconeri winger Lichtsteiner – a former Lazio player who has faced Totti in the Rome Derby – hit back.

“Totti is wrong,” the Swiss international told Rai Sport.

“We are the better team. Juventus are stronger than Roma. It is going to be a great game on Sunday, as both teams want to win, even though it won’t be decisive for the title.

“In order to win a Scudetto, you need to be consistent throughout the entire season.”

Roma are still unbeaten under Rudi Garcia, but are five points behind current Serie A leaders Juve.

Chiellini: Roma must prove themselves against Juventus

The defender insists his side have proven they are Italy's strongest with their performances in recent seasons after Francesco Totti suggested they are helped by officials

Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini is eager to put Roma's unbeaten record to the test when Serie A's top two meet on Sunday.

The defending champions currently hold a five-point lead over Rudi Garcia's men, who sit second and remain unbeaten in the league after 17 matches following their record-breaking, 10-game winning start to the season.

Giallorossi star Francesco Totti suggested earlier this term that Juve have benefitted from refereeing decisions so far in the 2013-14 campaign, but Chiellini is determined to prove they deserve to be at the top of the table when the sides meet in Turin.

"Over the past two and a half years we have proven to be the strongest on the pitch. We prove it in every game and we want to prove it on Sunday," he told Sportmediaset.

"Roma are doing great in the league, with a start that will go down in history. They are unbeaten and we cannot wait to face them to see if they'll be so good against us, too."

Chiellini's defensive partner Leonardo Bonucci went on to praise Roma's improvement under Garcia this season but insists his side are determined to clinch a third-straight Scudetto by staying true to their own style.

"Certainly the team has improved under Garcia, they have important individuals and will definitely do anything to throw a spanner into the works for Juve," he told JTV.

"But it's normal that, when you're in front, it all depends on you. With our quality, with our own game, we want to win a third league title in a row.

Buffon: 'Juve silenced critics'

Gigi Buffon said the 3-0 hammering of Roma proves Juventus are the best despite “alibis for those who don’t win.”

Arturo Vidal, Leonardo Bonucci and Mirko Vucinic were on target, while Daniele De Rossi and Leandro Castan saw red in the final stages.

It was their 10th consecutive Serie A victory and put them eight points clear at the top of the table.

“The statistics are impressive and now we can say that we fully deserve to be top of the table, casting aside any aspersions,” Buffon told Sky Sport Italia.

“The lads have learned that defeats teach you something, such as the loss against Inter last season and Fiorentina this term.”

The ‘aspersions’ included Francesco Totti saying this week that Juve always win with ‘a little help.’

“It’s just talk that lots of people say and it’s not as if Francesco was alone over the years. I think more than anything else this is used as a ready alibi for those who don’t win. They can just say ‘Juve are helped’ and ignore their own problems.

“To analyse the match honestly, Roma caused us many problems in the first half and we won thanks to the individual incidents, which we made the most of. The Giallorossi are a really good side and showed that tonight.

“It’s a very important victory, but Roma really impressed me for an hour tonight, so we cannot afford to let our concentration drop.”

De Sanctis: 'System makes Juve strong'

Roma goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis complained “the Italian football system makes Juventus clearly stronger than the rest.”

The shot-stopper spoke to Sky Sport Italia after a 3-0 defeat in Turin left them eight points adrift of the Serie A leaders.

“In the first half Roma played very well, but it’s a shame we conceded on the first dangerous situation. In the second half we were a bit chaotic and not sharp enough on set plays, which along with the red cards created an exaggerated result.

“We weren’t focused or concentrated enough on Leonardo Bonucci’s goal. It’s a shame and a real regret, because conceding straight after the second half made it extremely difficult to get back into the game.”

When asked what Juventus have more than Roma, De Sanctis made comments that are bound to cause controversy.

“I already said this week that the Italian football system makes Juventus clearly stronger than the rest. In the first half Roma proved they could play on a par with them and you can even lose, but it’s important to put in the performance.

“For the last three years Juve have been playing in a brand new stadium and this is an advantage, without doubt. It is also an advantage they will probably have over the other clubs for another six or seven years.”

The new law on helping clubs to build their own stadiums has been caught up in legal wrangling for many years and so far only Juve have been able to break through the red tape thanks to a deal with the local council.

Roma, Napoli, Cagliari, Palermo and Inter have all tried and failed so far to build their own arenas, while Udinese are restructuring the Stadio Friuli in conjunction with the council. The Juventus Stadium has vastly increased the Bianconeri's revenue.

Antonio Conte accused Roma of “pub talk provocation” before the match for suggesting Juve won with ‘help’ over the years.

“The result is a fact, but I don’t think it’s fair to say if anyone says something about Juventus that it’s pub talk,” snapped De Sanctis.

“Everyone is allowed to say what they want and if only the winners were allowed to talk then it would be meaningless.

“There will certainly be another match against Juventus on May 11. Juve were right about one thing, that at the end of the day it’s the result on the pitch that counts and tonight we didn’t prove ourselves.”

Here we go again FIGC is in our pocket yeah and they give us rewards and roses after every match -.-

Sabatini: 'Juve are more mature'

Roma director Walter Sabatini confessed “Juventus are more mature and the best team” after a 3-0 result.

The Giallorossi had most of the possession in Turin, but failed to take their chances and are now eight points adrift.

“We played in a different way to previous visits, but the result was the same,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“Roma’s first half performance was very good, then we conceded goals from a throw-in and a free kick, but we played like a great team.

“Juventus were more mature and showed their experience tonight, as we paid a heavy price for our distractions. We’ve got quality, but have to acknowledge the result.

“They are the best team, as they have proved over the last few years, but we believe that we can challenge them and the performance tonight proved it’s not an illusion.

“We must remember this is our first defeat of the season. We need to remember it and correct our mistakes.”

Sabatini was asked whether this defeat will mutate Roma’s transfer strategy in the January window.

“I had said we’d wait until this game to discuss matters with the Coach, but nothing changes. We will do what needs doing.”

Conte: 'Moderately satisfied'

Antonio Conte is “moderately satisfied” with Juventus going eight points clear of Roma with a 3-0 victory.

The Bianconeri secured the Winter Champion title this evening thanks to their 10th consecutive victory.

“I am only ever moderately satisfied until we achieve our targets, so this remains a stepping stone, but nothing definitive. Our satisfaction therefore has to remain moderate,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“There’s an entire second half of the season to go and we must do well. These eight points are important, but must not become an illusion, as if they rob us of the concentration and desire we need then we’ll be in real trouble. Anything could happen.

“Let’s not forget that Roma won their opening 10 games, yet in Week 18 we are eight points in front of them.

“I am still surprised by our growth in terms of tactics and mentality, as we are really improving in that respect. Don’t forget teams know us now, they know our strengths and weaknesses. That means we’ve had to work on strengthening our weaknesses and maintaining the strengths.

“I think the desire to win is a philosophy of life and I tried to transmit that to my players. There are others here who already know what that means, like Gigi Buffon and Arturo Vidal. They all realised it’s great to win and want to continue doing it, but to achieve that you need great humility, hunger and the willingness to work for one another.

“Just look at players like Carlos Tevez and Fernando Llorente who come back and actively take part in the defensive moves, not like old-fashioned strikers who would stand up there and wait for an assist to score.

“Llorente is a very important player for us who, after two months of apprenticeship, has settled right into the team. He holds up the ball, spreads the play for his teammates and is strong in the air.”

Conte was asked whether he had proved a point by ending the unbeaten record of French manager Rudi Garcia, who had been hailed throughout the media.

“Roma are a very dangerous side with great quality and strong investments. Today if Juve had not prepared the game in the right way, we would’ve had a real bellyache. Let’s just say an Italian Coach did well to prepare the tactics,” he smiled.

“When facing strong sides, such as Napoli already this season, you have to maintain your characteristics while trying to weaken their strengths. That is the job of a Coach, otherwise everyone can sit on the bench and pick a line-up.

“As I said before, the pitch always gives the just result and tonight that’s what it did.”

Despite their dominance in Serie A, Juve went out of the Champions League group phase.

“In the Champions League we were perhaps a little bit arrogant playing against Copenhagen or Galatasaray. We didn’t grab our opponents by the throat straight away and we paid for that. Of course, we also didn’t play the final game and in my view on a decent pitch we’d still be in the tournament.

“It’s a growth process and we went out in a painful manner, but gained valuable experience.”

Bonucci: 'Juve were intelligent'

Leonardo Bonucci explained Juventus “dominated Roma” 3-0 with a “humble and intelligent performance.”

The defender scored the second goal by turning in an Andrea Pirlo free kick at the back post. He celebrated by putting the ball under his shirt to mark his wife’s pregnancy.

“I usually attack the near post, but I stayed back and Andrea did well to place the ball there. The baby is expected on May 19,” Bonucci told Sky Sport Italia.

“We knew we had to take control on our turf to keep the top of the table. Despite sitting a little deeper than usual to avoid Roma counter-attacks, we still scored three goals and got an important victory.

“It was an intelligent performance, as we couldn’t let Roma make the most of their main strength, which is the pace of players like Gervinho and Adem Ljajic on the counter.”

Bonucci also snapped at the Giallorossi trash-talking over the past few weeks leading up to the game.

“We let Roma talk and we did our talking on the pitch. In recent years when Roma have come to the Juventus Stadium we dominated them and it proved to be the case this time too.

“Big clubs are built on strong defences, which is what we tried to do today. We were humble and waited rather than pouring forward to leave big gaps for Roma to run into.”

This was the Bianconeri’s 10th consecutive victory, so what do they have now that they did not last season?

“We have one more year of experience and the Coach always drills into us the hunger to win, which we maintain despite two consecutive Scudetti. We want to continue this run of victories and win a third straight title.”

Juventus still have a long way to go, says Conte

The 44-year-old has voiced his delight with Sunday's victory over Roma, but has insisted they cannot afford to get complacent

Juventus coach Antonio Conte feels it's too soon to claim that the Serie A title race is already over following the Bianconeri's 3-0 win over Roma on Sunday.

The reigning champions have moved eight points clear of the Giallorossi after this weekend's victory, yet Conte has warned that anything can still happen between now and the end of the season.

"The eight-point gap is important but we can’t afford to let it pull the wool over our eyes and lose concentration. Anything is still possible, just look at how we’ve made up 13 points on Roma," the successful coach told the Juventus website.

"Sunday’s victory is just an important step. We’ve still got one more game in Cagliari to round off the first half of the season, then on with the second.

"When you play against great teams like Roma you need to take advantage of their weak points. It would have been a problem had we not adequately prepared from a tactical point of view."

Juventus resume Serie A action away against Cagliari on Sunday.

Marotta today said : Pogba,Pirlo and Conte are not leaving Juve

The managing director of Juventus, Giuseppe Marotta, is guest tonight on "La Domenica Sportiva" Raidue. TuttoJuve.com is reporting in its entirety and in real time what he said:

Looking at the standings, you do not mind seeing the Inter so far away ...
"Beyond Inter, however, there are teams aggressive. This is the Rome that we dealt with yesterday, which was important as a roadmap having never lost a game, then Napoli, Fiorentina ... so I would say that in 20 days the end there are 60 points available, our advantage is important, but it is not significant in definitive terms. "

Two months ago there was a time when it was said that this Juve was less strong. Instead this team and its coach, who yesterday blocked the Roma on the wing and continue to surprise us ...

"And I must say that the start of the extraordinary Rome has tried to put Juventus in a chiaroscuro. But in reality even today we lost one game, we drew as many games for the rest we have always won. So essentially means that the beginning was so hard, but still along the lines of last year we re-present today in the same position last year and it is a ride that must be ascribed with great credit to the Count and his boys. During the last ten games the team has produced 26 goals and only one right away. "

The fact of being out of the Champions League has given you more energy to say 'I want three consecutive Serie A titles'?

"That was and is a goal that you had from the start. Initial goal was to do well in the Champions League, FA Cup and Italian championship. Then we went out of the Champions League, this has left great bitterness, but the continuation of this roster has come physiologically enough. "

In your fort. 47 games in those two and a half years, 36 wins, 102 goals scored and 26 conceded. The championships are built starting from the performance in your stadium?

"I think so, this is a bit 'a feature of the big teams. Friend in front of the audience you an extra boost. Having a stadium our means having a strong sense of belonging, the people who are physically close because there are no barriers acts as the twelfth man on the field. And 'one more incentive. But beyond this, I think the team has done very well even on the road and I would say above that is a roadmap which continues for three years consecutively. "

If you talk about it for months, I will make three names: Pogba, Pirlo and Conte. Which of the three can really get away from Juve in June?

"Right now I think nobody. Ne now, nor in June. Why Pirlo, although it is out of contract, is a player who has raised at Juventus."

It 's true that you are ready for a three-year Pirlo?

"I say that certainly the relationship between society and the player are great, as soon as possible we're going to extend his stay at Juventus. Duration it will let you know when we are going to define."

Pogba to have had real deals?

"Pogba is clearly a very good player, you know all about him and then there are the big club. Yet even Juventus is a great club, is a company used to buy and to sell. But are all situations that then be addressed later when the programs will be made on our part, when we will meet with representatives of the player to extend his contract, because this is an important fact. "

But there is a meeting scheduled in a week?

"Not this week but in the medium term. But I have to say that the relationship with 'entourage, with the men of confidence Pogba is great, so from this point of view we are comfortable."

But the conflict with the Count of certain choices - we talked Matri Giaccherini - solved? You feared that it could lead to a divorce?

"No, I've never been afraid, but I must say that these dynamics are, however, synonymous with great transparency. Delle dynamics between the coach and the society in terms of transfers will be there, there have been and there always are. It 'clear that the company acts trying to please the coach, but also trying to generate quell'optimum sports that also takes into account certain economic and financial balance. then it is obvious that you can not always please the coaches. But beyond this, the relationship with Conte is excellent, the relationship with the coach who then is the manager, the real architect of our journey is positive. too, for he did not see the particular alarmist. "

And 'real demand for the Count want to have an external module to change in January and revive the 4-3-3?

"No, I must say, however, that the Count has married this tactical approach, then it may very well continue on this. It 'clear that the external lever for him are a very important part in the development of the game, but still managed to create the conditions because the team can easily go in marking, so that only in a game we did not score, Nele last ten games we have done 26 goals, just one. much important data which demonstrate that the team is prolific, both as a defensive point of view fails to check out the dividends.'d say the tactical flexibility there should be in the world of football, there must also be a coach which is modern and open Conte, external so the fact that as we are not at this time covered, partly because we found ourselves without Pepe for more than a year and a half, can generate in him, but also in our society, the need to cover this gap., but a gap is very marginal compared to the value of this group. "

This is the best Juve ever? Or our league is not what it used to be?

"I say that the numbers are important, and these are quite symptomatic of a Juventus that for two years has been a leader in Italy, it is still at this time even though we are in the middle of the road. It 'difficult to make comparisons because for me as far as my memory will help me to do this analysis, football is constantly changing, so you have to make the comparison in relation to the opponents that we have throughout the year. however say that the team is strong. E 'strong but above develops a collective game where everyone tends to have a ductility. compete may well also at European level, beyond the fact that we were eliminated. "

Already?
"Last year this team reached the quarter, this year we were eliminated, however, because the Champions League is a tournament, not a league where if you mess up a lot of risks to be eliminated. We have trusted the last game against Galatasaray, when the adverse weather conditions have not been able to develop a certain type of game, perhaps forgetting that we threw away qualification in Copenhagen and at home to Galatasaray. "

Got injured Giuseppe Rossi. Quagliarella always liked to Fiorentina: there is the loan? Or just final sale?

"We have five strikers that those who were counting the commitments of the season and we believe it can serve for the whole season .. And I'm still the commitments of the season, because let's not forget who will participate in the Europa League, which has perhaps less value from the qualitative point of view, but it is a commitment firmer and stronger, because the games are more. want to get to the bottom and then we need a competitive squad. then is also what every player thinks. Quagliarella If he had expressed the 'intention to be transferred, obviously we would have taken into account, but at this time we do not have demands. "

Vucinic is required to pià big European teams. What are your intentions?

"No, we do not want to give anyone. I have to say that the players are playing for Juventus. Who is at Juventus in grandisquadre know that you make a shortlist of 24 elements, where titolarissimi do not exist, but there are holders: however, players who are used from time to time. Conte is very good in the presence of so-called trickle, quotes, actors, because good or bad they all had the chance to play. competitions are still three and a rose must be numerically strong. "

Boniperti: Juve could make history

Giampiero Boniperti has urged Juventus to ‘fight until the last second’, as he says new records and even a 100-point tally aren’t beyond them.

The Bianconeri recorded a 10th consecutive League win on Sunday evening at home to Roma, to stretch their advantage at the top of Serie A to eight points.

“The numbers matter at the end, but Conte and his boys can do great things,” club legend Boniperti has mused to Tuttosport today.

“If we play well then we can even think about rewriting history, to achieve what has never been seen before. Precisely for this reason we must leave the players and Coach in peace.

“Can we get to 100 points? To be able to even imagine reaching a record of 100 points, or to reach other goals beyond the ordinary, there is only one rule.

“Fight. Fight forever. Every minute. In each game. Until the end. Until the last second of the last match.

“Conte is working well and if things continue, surely the results will be there.

“Do not ever think that you are already at the end. Because this is the history of Juventus.

“And Conte is close to perfection with this run.”

The capacity crowd allowed to attend Cagliari’s home match with Juventus this weekend reportedly won’t be increasing, as previously hoped.

Due to restrictions in place at the Stadio Sant’Elia, the Sardinian outfit have only been allowed a maximum of 4,798 fans to attend games.

Reports during this week, though, hinted at town officials working towards a hypothesis of erecting a further 1,000-2,000 seats in the curva Nord, ahead of League-leaders Juventus’ visit this Sunday.

However, the Gazzetta dello Sport report today that this plan of action will not go through, due to rules on public security and with there not being enough time before the game to initiate it successfully.

Brazzo assesses Juve so far

Hasan Salihamidzic has mused on Juventus’ strengths, but also where they fell short in the Champions League this year.

The Bianconeri are into the Europa League for the second half of the season, after finishing third in the group stages of the Champions League, but have followed that disappointment with a strong run in Serie A.

“Juventus are a very strong team. The most important part of the team is the midfield with Pirlo, who is leading their play,” former utility man Salihamidzic has mused on the Old Lady with TuttoJuve this week.

“Equally important is the defence, which is working well. Juventus continue to play with intensity and strength and can score one or two goals every game.

“It seems that they can win Serie A, whilst it would have been great for them to qualify for the next round of the Champions League.

“It is a pity that they could not make it. So, they must win the Europa League, that is what I hope for Juve.

“How can they improve against the big teams in Europe? In the current campaign, Juve would have needed to win their home games, that would have been crucial to have progressed forward.

“They should work better because Juventus has a great team that is capable of competing with other European clubs.”

Juve in IFFHS’ top 20

The International Federation of Football History and Statistics has ranked world football’s clubs, with Juventus placing highest from Italy.

The IFFHS has, since 1991, released annual lists taking into account statistics from the world game. Considering results in the club game, the 2013 list ranking each club has been formulated.

Treble winners Bayern Munich have unsurprisingly topped the list and have done so with an all-time ranking score second only to 1993’s Juventus team, say IFFHS.

The Old Lady are Serie A’s best representative, but only come in at 19th in the list, followed in 20th by Lazio.

Milan in 35th, Fiorentina at 38th and Napoli joint 46th are the only other Italian sides to make the top 50.

The IFFHS describe the ranking system as: “[taking] into consideration the results of twelve months of continental and intercontinental competitions, national League matches (including play-offs) and the most important national cup (excluding points won before the round of 16).

“All countries are rated at four levels based upon the national league performance—clubs in the highest level leagues receive 4 points for each match won, 2 for a draw and 0 for a defeat. Level 2 is assigned 3 pts. (win), 1.5 (draw) and 0 (lost), and so on with the next lower levels.”

IFFHS 2013 club world ranking

1. Bayern Munich (Germany) 370

2. Real Madrid (Spain) 290

3. Chelsea (England) 273

4. Atletico Madrid (Spain) 251

5. Barcelona (Spain) 247

6. Paris Saint- Germain (France) 240

7. 1893 Basel (Switzerland) 239

8. Atletico Mineiro (Brazil) 238

= Tottenham Hotspur (England) 238

10. Benfica (Portugal) 232

19. Juventus (Italy), 205

20. Lazio (Italy), 204

35. Milan (Italy), 178

38. Fiorentina (Italy), 174

46. Napoli (Italy), 166

100. Roma (Italy), 126
