Alessandro Del Piero is reportedly ready to leave Sydney FC for a new career experience in Brazil with Flamengo.

According to Tuttosport, the former Juventus captain has been disappointed with Sydney’s form and the instability within the club after a change of Coach.

Just five months after his arrival in Australia’s A-League, there are reports Del Piero has been offered a new experience in Brazil.

Zico contacted the 38-year-old personally to explain the benefits of moving to Flamengo on a two-year contract.

That would also allow Del Piero to be in the country ahead of the 2014 World Cup.

Tuttosport claim brother Stefano Del Piero and intermediaries flew to Rio de Janeiro on Friday to discuss terms.

Del Piero signs new Sydney deal


Juventus idol Alessandro Del Piero has spoken of his delight after he signed a new one-year contract with Sydney FC.

Reports yesterday suggested that the 38-year-old would put pen to paper on an extension with the Australian club and that deal is now official.

“It was a big challenge for me, for my family, to take a long trip here and change everything in our life,” he said at a Press conference seven months after his summer arrival.

“My family and I have had a great time here. The weather, the city, everything is good. But first of all, I'm here to play.

“It's a challenge,” he added. “I work to win this challenge and I want to win again next year.”

The option to extend his deal was set to expire on February 28, but Sydney have convinced the No 10 to remain despite interest from American and Brazilian clubs.

Del Piero, who earns around $2m a season, has scored 11 goals in 18 games for the side who are now in with a chance of qualifying for the play-offs.

“We are doing well at the moment, but it's not enough,” said Del Piero after the side’s problems at the start of the campaign.

“It's a great moment for me and for Sydney FC. We have six games to go and we have to put our energy into making the play-offs.”

Alessandro Del Piero has congratulated former international teammate Francesco Totti after the Roman netted his 225th goal in Serie A.

Totti is now joint-second in the all time scoring charts after drawing level with Gunnar Nordahl following his strike in the 3-1 win over Genoa last night.

“225 goals, another great target reached by a great champion – well done Francesco! Ciao Ale,” the Juventus legend, now playing for Sydney FC, noted on Twitter.

Del Piero takes commentary role


Alessandro Del Piero will be heading out to Brazil for the Confederations Cup, having signed on as a television commentator.

The former Italy international, who was part of the 2006 World Cup-winning squad, has today been confirmed as having joined Sky Sport Italia’s commentary team for this summer.

The Juventus legend, who is now based in Australia, will be part of the channel’s Confederations Cup coverage from mid-June.

“I am very happy for this new role that I will cover,” Del Piero told reporters at the announcement of the news, before reflecting on life in Australia and his recent visit back to Italy.

“The passion for football is with me forever. In Australia, apart from the weather, I am very happy.

“Returning to Turin has been nice. I have found friends and certain habits. My great habit here in Turin? To stay at home.

“I was pleasantly surprised by the Juventus fans’ affection towards me during the Scudetto party.

“The relationship with them has remained unique. I’m very happy about that.”
