Why was Tata so afraid to bench Cesc?

A season is won and lost on details, barca might not exhibit the same amount of dominance and confidence they did few years ago, but to me, they whiffed all their title chances, in about all competition, on forcing Cesc into the team.

Barca going away from something as basic as flanking two attackers both side of messi was stupid 101, and it has all kinds of negative side effects. Even if Messi is not in terrific form, having two runners that can move in between fullback and CB on both side, multiply problems for defense, and give targets for messi to play through balls, which he can still pull off. Stretching teams wide used to be something barca excelled at, but now teams are happy to just muscle the middle and give up the wings. No wonder Messi has no space to go anywhere. Alba going forward is not threatening when he is the only one doing it. Someone actually needs to pin back the fullback so that Alba can do whatever he wants. Neymar is not good on the right, much better on the left, and that doesnt help his confidence. Cesc is the worst presser i have seen in barca since maybe maxi lopez.

The decsion to play him in most key games barca had this season to me is one of the biggest reason they didnt advance further than they did. Worst of it all, teams just sit, relax, and control things without the possession. They were in that situation in the camp with vs atletico, put neymar back on the left = goal.

The guy is good, great even when you play him behind the CF, that that's not barca. they literally shoot themselves in the foot with that signing. His catalan heritage means that he is impossible to bench, and he literally blackmailed barca into playing him with the man yoo link last summer.

Terrible player that messes up the whole team by his sheer presence around. Sack him ffs, or keep him, more drama for us

The only reason I could think of is that he is too scared to do it. Dani once told me that Tata is would always start the star players even if they are dog shit just because he is scared of their reaction. Like Cesc would go public to complain about his lack of playing time while Pedro won't.

Basically he doesn't have the balls to do it.

Fabregas is a marketable name due to his Premiership history. The Barca board is making the decision to force him into the team as Cruyff alluded to recently with his "the coach isn't in full control at Barca" comments. Similar to how Flo forced Carlo to play a visibly injured Bale in the first La Liga Clasico.

Basically Barca is turning into the same merchandising "jersey sales over substance" institution which made me dislike Real Madrid in the early 00s so much and root for Barca instead. Selling a homegrown talent like Thiago while forcing in Fabregas into the starting XI which forces Iniesta and Neymar out of position and takes away runners which Messi needs. Probably the worst thing I have ever seen in football history apart from Fabregas outpacing Chiellini in Euro 2012 final. Which still tops the list.

Why should we change the system just so Fabregas can thrive? It would result in the same thing that happened at Arsenal. Fabregas having the ideal environment to highlight his strength and cover his weaknesses which means collectively no trophies for 8 years.

And even if we were to play a system with proper 10 it would be Messi who would play that role. Not Fabregas.

Just take him back, fss. A straight swap for Koscielny would also do as far as I'm concerned.

Xavi is the one who should be benched imo, I don't get the point of having him in the team anymore, he doesn't defend, is too slow in releasing the ball, offers nothing in attack aside from calmness in possession. Play Cesc there until you can sign a CM who'll bench both.

Have you seen Cesc in the Xavi role? there is a reason he never plays there, and the fact that Xavi at 34 is still doing it is a testament to how unfit Cesc is for that role. Not to mention, you need some sack of balls to keep Xavi on the bench in big games.

Barca are trapped at that point where players are so much bigger than the coach that it's clouding every decision he takes.

Barca need a coach like Pep again, someone who's going to make drastic changes, sell big players and do his own thing.

In terms of why Fabregas starts, it's because he's a big name who cost a lot, homegrown etc. Also stats wise he's done ok, it's just his overall play that's the problem.

Cesc did not play Xavi role at Arsenal,it was. Pure AM role,why use media to attack Arsenal for 2 years, thenwhen you have him, you destroy his. Swag

how the fck was cesc the reason why we havent won anything in 8 years? are you insane? the reason we havent won anything was because of lack of squad depth, nothing to do with cesc.

The other side to the "Barcelona ruined/don't know how to use Fabregas" is that Fab just isn't versatile enough to play in a system that Barca has.

I think it's a combination of him being an important man in the changing room (support of nearly every captain), the fact that at first Cesc in the line-up worked (against City and Madrid) so why change a working formula and that he does have the ability to change a game. I wouldn't call it fear though.

Maybe there's a clause in Fabregas's contract that prevent Barca from benching him for a certain amount of time.

I just don't know why they are doing this over and over again, it's plain self destructing.

Barca need to find a way to use Fabregas. A Tech. CF would suffice.
