Following David Moyes' sacking an entrepreneurial bright spark took to the online auction site and put the now infamous banner on sale.

Despite the slogan representing one of the club's worst periods in recent times the listing is flying reaching over a staggering £10,000 already.

Moyes was ousted as Manchester United boss early on Tuesday after a day of intense speculation surrounding his future on Easter Monday.

The slogan, which was hung in the Stretford End, referred to the nature of Moyes' appointment when predecessor Sir Alex Ferguson handpicked him for the role.

But things didn't exactly go to plan for Moyes and after one of the worst seasons in recent memory the board decided enough was enough and wielded the axe.

The banner became a focal point for disgruntled and angry fans - it even had to be protected by stewards during the 3-0 derby defeat to bitter rivals City last month.

Last month, disgruntled fans flew a 'Wrong one, Moyes out' banner over Old Trafford during the game against Aston Villa.

As he contemplates his next move in football management, David Moyes might consider a temporary diversion into soothsaying.

"If anybody wanted to leave, they'd be poorer for it," Moyes once said while he was Everton manager. "Most people that have left here, it's not tended to work out for them."

At the time, Moyes was talking about a player – Steven Pienaar – who fancied a fresh challenge at Tottenham Hotspur, but like many of the statements during eleven years on Merseyside they sound even more perceptive following his sacking by Manchester United.

Moyes often spoke about ‘right fits' at a football club, as if the aura surrounding a character in a particular environment was as important as their talent for the job.

He proved the wrong type for Manchester United from day one, but those who argue his reputation is in tatters are misguided. Just because you are not equipped to be Prime Minister does not mean you don't have the necessary attributes to be the greatest council leader your parish has known.



Moyes was found wanting at Old Trafford, but his period of unemployment will be brief given he has already proven his credentials as a manager who can take a club from relegation struggles into Europe. Most chairman beyond the top six (or seven this season) dream of a CV like his on their list of job applicants.

The upward trajectory of Moyes' career was ended he when drove away from Carrington on Tuesday. He knows after the step up from Everton to United he will have to take a leap back down to restore his credentials, but his self-belief will not waver.

Moyes was a regular on managerial shortlists long before Sir Alex Ferguson anointed him, often turning down opportunities to leave Everton amid suspicions he was waiting for United's call.

The greatest immediate challenge he faces is one of perception, the danger being he is now typecast as representative of primitive football values.

The football industry is subject to as many changing trends and whims as London Fashion Week. Moyes must find a way of being in vogue again, as he was when first mooted as United's manager-in-waiting during his Preston days.

Moyes was once asked to describe his football philosophy. Unimpressed by the new breed of coaches who look and sound like lifestyle gurus, he kept it simple. "My philosophy is to win," he said.

Moyes's problem as he begins his personal rehabilitation is the romantics now rule the football world. From Pep Guardiola, to Jürgen Klopp, Brendan Rodgers and Roberto Martínez, it is those with the ability to sell and implement pure, attacking football ideals who are charming boardrooms and supporters. The age of the scowling Scot running every department of an elite football club has gone.

If Everton were to lose Martínez this summer, few working at Goodison would want their former Scottish manager back, the Merseysiders' considering the landscape far more scenic and amiable these days. They wanted him to evolve the playing style during the final few years of his reign.

Spurs would seem a reasonable fit. They showed interest in Moyes in the past but opted against him on style grounds when moving for Andre Villas-Boas in 2012. Newcastle United also sounded out Moyes numerous times during his Goodison tenure, but how would his appointment at St James' Park be received? Many would see the promise of stability and a regular top six finish and think it nirvana compared to now.

A few others might ask: "Will he play the same was as Kevin Keegan?" If that is part of the criteria, Moyes would have a PR battle before he reached the Angel of the North. Moyes might consider a career revival is best accommodated abroad, a route successfully taken by Steve McClaren when he went from the future of British coaching to a man with umbrella within the space of 18 months.

Securing a title or Champions League qualification in a league where there is no competition can enhance the CV, and the Celtic job should be available when Neil Lennon inevitably moves south at some point in the future.

Alternatively, there is the Roy Hodgson road to redemption, taking a massive pay cut, joining a low ranking Premier League club who'd be privileged to have you before moving into international football if or when the Scotland job becomes available.

Moyes has actually already hinted at possible next move. "I would love to go abroad in the future," he said when celebrating his 10th anniversary at Goodison.

"The attraction would be to learn another language and understand different philosophies. During my path to coaching, I went to different places, saw different teams training, tried to enhance my knowledge as much as I could."

Many will say it needs to be a different David Moyes who returns to management. Plenty of others will argue the one who worked at Everton and convinced United he was the right man in the first place will do just fine.
