It was his release clause.

He only plays adequately in Alonso's position.

Anywhere else he's slow, can't dribble, gets dispossessed and can't do anything in the final third.

Still don't understand why Ancelotti keeps playing him at CM, when he's clearly not comfortable there.

He's been so so disappointing.
And our only excuse for his constant poor performances is "he needs to play in Alonso's position" and that's getting quite old.

To be fair Alonso had a terrible season last year and it looked like he was going to be sold. Few expected Alonso to stay, and fewer still expected him to pick up his form so much. It was always obvious they would not be able to play alongside each other since they are too similar.

Alonso doing well this season has a lot to do with Modric playing alongside him and our change of formation. Defensively Alonso is still suspect.

If Illarra plays in the CL final, then he has a chance to show how good he is and to help his cause of playing more regularly in his preferred position next season.
