Darmstadt and Wolfsburg go to penalties! Fun Very Happy

Max Grün saved 2 penalties and thus VfL Wolfsburg. This means "only" 4 BL clubs didn't make it so far. Tomorrow the HSV and Schalke have two difficult matches against Energie Cottbus and Dynamo Dresden, respectively.

Well, Darmstadt 98 had a couple of chances in extra time. They have only themselves to blame that they didn't score.

I really thought Energie Cottbus would kick out HSV while Schalke proceed against Dynamo Dresden, but it turned out the other way round

DFB-Pokal 2014/15 - Page 3 Empty DFB Pokal stuff to merge

Post by rwo power Mon Aug 18, 2014 10:09 pm

So now we have left:
13 x Bundesliga
12 x 2nd Bundesliga
4 x 3rd Liga
3 x 4th division

That means five BL sides and six 2nd BL side were eliminated by lower division opponents. Not bad ^^

Thanks rwo. Correct me if I'm wrong, out of these only the Schalke game can be considered 'upset'. Paderborn & Augsburg are pretty weak team and was perhaps well matched by their lower-league opponents. Stuttgart may have a better squad but they have been struggling for last few season and Bochum is pretty strong, right!

Also, what's your take on PEA!!! I watched (part) of the Dortmund game and he seemed like a all pace and nothing else guy.

Well, Mainz were 7th and Augsburg 8th in last year's Bundesliga table and they were playing against a 3rd Liga and 4th division side respectivlely. I would say that is quite an upset nonetheless.

Wouldn't you consider it an upset, too, if a team like Newcastle or Stoke were thrown out of the FA Cup by a 3rd/4th division side?

And Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang? Well, I think we need to watch how he plays in the upcoming BL matches. In the test matches and yesterday, he scored quite some goals. (This should better be discussed in the Bundesliga or Dortmund thread, though)

first batch of 2nd round games in progress.

Pep's press conference ahead of the Hamburg game tomorrow:

- Benatia is banned because of a suspension from the Italian cup

- that's also why Boateng was rested on Sunday. Pep: "He is fit, but I decided to leave him out against Gladbach. Jerome has played very much recently. I didn't want to take any risks for the Hamburg game. Jerome is the best center back in the world. "

Dynamo Dresden 2:1 (AET) VfL Bochum
cheers Didn't they (Dresden) play in the first unified league along with Rostok???

I watched the Dortmund game and they seemed to have fielded their regular XI. Could have been an opportunity to rest some key players.

Yup. And they like to kick out blue-white teams XD

You underestimate the importance of the DFB-Pokal. It is held in pretty high regard in Germany. And Bundesliga teams who get kicked out inthe first and second round are usually ridiculed pretty much. And don't think that the BL teams that are already out fielded only their second teams. The small clubs simply give their all and some more against them.

Gündogan, Pisczek and Aubameyang were rested, Reus came off after 60 minutes.
Plus, BVB NEEDED to be convincing in this game to get back into some kind of shape.

Well, considering that Ilkay Gündogan is still on the way to full recovery, it is sensible not to have him play every 3 days. Plus Dortmund was able to cope without him for more than a year without losing 4 games in a row. And when Marco Reus came off, Dortmund were already 2:0 up and he had scored his goal. ^^

By the way, after today's matches, half of the Bundesliga teams will be out after the 2nd round. XD
