Uruguay are mounting a determined defence of Luis Suarez, claiming there’s an international conspiracy to get him banned.

The striker was caught on camera biting Giorgio Chiellini’s shoulder during their World Cup match and photographs of the tooth marks have gone round the world.

FIFA opened an investigation and a verdict on Suarez is expected by tomorrow morning with anything from six games to two years called for.

“We don’t have any doubts that this has happened because it’s Suarez involved and secondly because Italy have been eliminated,” lawyer Alejandro Balbi told Uruguayan media.

“There’s a lot of pressure from England and Italy. There is a possibility that they ban him, because there are precedents, but we are convinced that it was an absolutely casual play, because if Chiellini can show a scratch on one shoulder, Suarez can show a bruised and an almost closed eye.

“If every player starts showing the injuries he suffers and they open inquiries for them everything will be way too complicated in the future.

“We’re going to use all the arguments possible so that Luis gets out in the best possible way.”

The Uruguayan FA are remarkably claiming the pictures of Chiellini’s shoulder were ‘photoshopped’ to make the bite marks more visible, but it remains to be seen how they will counter the numerous video replays.

They also imply there is an international conspiracy to get Suarez suspended for the rest of the World Cup after Uruguay reached the Last 16.

“You shouldn’t forget that we’re rivals of many and we can be for the hosts in the future. This does not go against what might have happened, but there’s no doubt that Suarez is a stone in the shoe for many.”

I have to say the way he and the Uruguay team behave in the aftermath of this is absolutely shocking and disgraceful on top of the already disgraceful incident itself.
Playing it down, denying it, attacking Chiellini, claiming there's a conspiracy etc.

If Suarez doesn't fully apologize for that, like he's sorry that he doesn't control himself etc pp, I too hope they step on him really hard.

apology won't do anything. He's done this 3 times. He's already apologized publicly twice and still went on to bite again. He'll be ridiculed for the apology just as much. Should just take the punishment and go into hiding at Liverpool until the season starts. In time, it'll blow over.

Uruguay's relationship with Suarez kind of reminds me of a delusional mothers unconditional support for her favourite degenerate son that she has showered with love and affection since birth.

I don't think their denials help him much.

Even if I was knocked out by Uruguay  , I don't blame their behaviour about this vicissitude.
They are trying desperately to exonerate him so to have available for World Cup.
And in the football it's enough normal.
Because I am not hypocrital , and I remind that we did the same identical thing when Mauro Tassotti elbowed Luis Enrique smearing his face with blood in USA 1994.

On a more serious note, I am very disappointed by the manner in which Lugano and the Uruguayan FA have attempted to defend the indefensible, it sets an appalling example, weakens the attempts made by all to remove distasteful incidents such as these from the game and also fails to truly demonstrate to Suarez the utter madness of his actions. Will anyone be truly surprised if this happens yet again in the future when those around Suarez rush to defend and dismiss such a blatant assault? It is those closest to Suarez that have the responsibility to make him understand that he has let them down and that there will be consequences.

I feel sorry for the Liverpool fans who have been admirably loyal to their player but have been left with such a bitter taste in their mouth after this incident, this is not what the fans deserved.

Suarez banned for nine games and all football activity for four months.

The four months is too light. That basically means a two month ban with the summer break. Happy that his world cup is over at least.

Fully deserved, maybe a even a bit lenient.

i agree, he got off easy because of the summer.

Lets buy him cheap asap.
