I don't know about the quality of strikers falling... it's the number of strikers that can lead the line all by themselves. It was always a duo for a long time until very recently. So you didn't need just one player to be the guy in every game to create the havoc. 4-4-2 was played by every team.

The elite still plays with more than one even today: Madrid play with 2, Barca plays with 2, PSG, Atleti, etc.

IMO, the cost of strikers has forced the less fortunate to focus on one striker systems... they can't afford 2 lol. And the good ones end up on top teams at a very very young age. So you're get a misallocation of assets.

Now or ever... there just aren't that many players that an carry the responsibility of carrying the attack line alone.
