Ebola outbreak

I feel bad for the nurses who treat the Ebola patients, some brave nurses.

I know many nurses and most dont know how hard and crazy stuff they have to deal and Ebola is just a killer.

Is it true the cold weather could slow it down?

Ebola isn't weather dependant. The only thing that might slow it down weather-wise would be if the sick people stay inside due to the weather and don't go around infecting others.

That's the third case actually... it's the second healthcare worker that worked with Duncan that's been confirmed to be infected. And she had already taken a cross-country trip to Cleveland, Ohio and back when she was diagnosed.

I can't comment on Europe but the tradition of free travel and almost inherent resistance to any restrictions placed thereon will be a major hindrance to any containment efforts in the United States if the disease manages to take hold. Both a news crew that had worked alongside an infected camera man and the family that had direct contact with Duncan before his diagnosis have already attempted to break voluntary isolation and been forced into mandatory quarantine in separate incidents. While ebola isn't nearly so infectious as diseases like influenza it is also not well known and thus many people and institutions aren't familiar with the necessary steps to prevent its spread. Add to that the insanely high mortality rate and lack of effective vaccine/treatment and what should be a rather straightforward if extensive effort to contain and stem the spread of ebola could quickly turn into a mess and potential catastrophe. It doesn't help that US media has in recent years made a habit of reporting on big news stories with whatever information they can find at hand, leading to half-truths and outright false information being spread by trusted, nation- or world-wide sources.

The fact that it's another healthcare worker is appalling. Like training, procedure and preparation meant nothing.

Also, common sense would suggest to me that someone who's been treating an Ebola patient would be placed in a risk group that would not be allowed to travel... I guess not, then.

As I said before, ebola is a very different and foreign disease to what the US and its medical facilities generally encounter. Hemorrhagic fevers in as a whole are actually relatively rare in the United States so people and facilities lack experience in dealing with them, particularly ones as dangerous and "messy" as ebola. Even well trained and equipped medical teams run a risk of getting infected when treating patients due simply to the amount of fluids they have to deal with. In this way some of the very same factors that make the disease so very deadly in Africa also present a challenge in the US, though the US undoubtedly has massively superior infrastructure to adapt and properly supply medical teams with training and equipment than most if not all African nations do.

Apparently the Spanish nurse who was the first person to contract the disease in Europe has recovered from it

Also, I haven't read about any new cases (outside of Africa) in a couple of days. Reason for optimism.

I'd give it more than a week before getting too optimistic about things being contained.

We just had an Ebola suspect in my hometown (a guy who just came from Ghana and fell sick) just a couple streets away, but here everything was dealt with calmly and safely - and fortunaly it turned out to be a normal flu (pneumonia to be precise).

One of the worst things of Ebola is it takes days before it takes effect. This guy was screened at every airport and passed all the tests so he thought he was fine and lived his life normally.

Learn what? The doctor monitored his health extensively and notified authorities as soon as he began exhibiting symptoms (took his own temperature twice a day, monitored any sign of aches or coughing or nausea, etc) and the disease itself has never been contagious BEFORE symptoms appeared. Until evidence shows otherwise, the doctor and NYC's services did exactly what should be reasonably expected. The only people he had contact with after symptoms began showing up have been quarantined for monitoring, and while he was out jogging, flying, bowling, etc none of the symptoms had yet appeared so it was quite unlikely he was contagious.

Was sick on Tuesday.
Nausea, vomitting, intense feverish chills.
Obviously got paranoid.

The fact that this thread has no replies since October is good news. It's interesting, though, the way the first Ebola cases emerged in Europe and North America, you would have thought it's only the beginning. Now there's been nothing that I have heard about for over a month.

Bit weird it died all of a sudden but it kinda reminds me of how Swine flu hype died when it first broke out.

There's been a confirmed Ebola case in Glasgow, Scotland. A health care worker who returned from Sierra Leone on Sunday. The patient will be transferred to a London hospital soon. She's travelled from Casablanca to Heathrow to Glasgow.
