England playing very well and look the better side at the moment. Need to get a goal though, or Japan can and will punish them.

Also: feel free to insert your own sarcastic remark about those terrible temperatures you're dealing with here.

Iwabuchi looking dangerous for Japan.

Lucy Bronze struggling. Looks like she'll be subbed.

Now Bardsley is down with a problem.

I am actually quite confident if it goes to penalties.

But extra time will be a chore

Japan starting to make more errors. England really have been excellent without the ball.

Extra-time looking likely atm.

If this match goes into extra time, the winner will be at a severe disadvantage against the USWNT.

Heartbreak for England.

Hell of a run for that side though and still a chance at a fantastic 3rd place finish.

Reaching Semis was an achievement, but this way to go out when Final was so close.

We overcomitted at the end of the game and left a 4v4 at the back. Basset does well to intercept the cross but just couldn't steer it wide of the goal.

Overall, though, we over-achieved to reach the semi's in the first place, and just stood toe-to-toe with the holders and didn't look out of our depth at all. Couldn't be prouder of the team.

Still a chance to get third, though I'm sure Germany will ruin us.

Bassett trending on twitter. Lots of support for her. Such an unlucky connection. Has happened to the best defenders so she has nothing to be ashamed of. Awful way for England to go out though, as was said.

They have to keep this fight though if they want 3rd place from Germany, who will be licking their own wounds.

As for me, this is what I wanted ultimately. Japan looked very vulnerable against a team willing to defend resolutely against them and force them into uncharacteristic errors. They play like that against us and I fancy our chances. That said, their technical ability continues to astound me.
