Exactly, this is 'straya, the place where you start drinking at 18 and have your first hangover at 16

And your first drink at 13?

The problem in 'straya is that people never get past the "drinking to get drunk" stage of their lives. Some people just don't know their limits.

Re: The Official Talk About Whatever Thread
When I see a person throw up at a party or act like a complete idiot because they're drunk, I tend to think that person is pretty weak. Weak not in a physical sense, but in terms of their self-control. What are they trying to gain from drinking so much? Are they trying to compensate for lack of confidence or personality? Anyway, I just think it's embarrassing for a person when they can't hold their liquor. My opinion of a person has never been enhanced by seeing them inebriated on a nightclub's bathroom floor.

Re: The Official Talk About Whatever Thread
You would despise the drinking culture of Madison then.
I've yet to hit the point of being an idiot or throwing up due to drinking and plan on keeping it that way. However of the people here I know who drink (which is most) many see it as a point of pride to go out and "black out" or get so drunk they end up throwing up.
Personally never saw the appeal in blacking out, and I don't think anyone can see the appeal in throwing up. So I've always resisted. It's quite a shame I've had to endure a lot of peer pressure to do so. I just don't see that as healthy.
And since I've gotten here I've had more than a comfortable amount of nights taking care of people in such a state and unfortunately for some looking out for symptoms of alcohol poisoning. I remember talking about taking care of my brother 9 months ago and was told it would be good experience for college...truer words have never been spoken.

Nobody should ever want to be that guy who throws up, although most of us will unfortunately be that guy once or twice. It's important to know the difference between drinking too much and riding the porcelain bus

Re: The Official Talk About Whatever Thread
Had a horrid experience a couple weeks ago with a TA who gave me a poor grade on a reading response for some sociology articles. I thought I had made quite a good paper, and was surprised to see my poor grade. A friend of mine had gotten quite a good grade and I and a different friend of mine were surprised to see this as he's not the sharpest tool in the shed. He's a nice guy and I don't mean to put him down, but it just seemed odd.
So that other friend, who is older and a sociology major took a look at the papers and I was told that based on what he saw and the grades, according to this TA it seems you are supposed to be as basic as possible in a response/analysis and simply summarize and otherwise write in a very elementary fashion. Essentially he said that I was kind of screwed over and it was bullshit.
Making my next response tonight was torrid as I attempted to revert back to Jr. High level of writing. I spent at least an hour, probably two, trying to make it the way I think the TA would want it, but had a nightmare of a time writing in that fashion. Overall I scrapped it and went back to the way I usually write, which took another couple hours. Here is to hoping that it works out.
Never would I ever have thought in a university I'd be punished for writing at a higher level. I admit that it wasn't a perfect paper and I was willing to take points off for it because I did have mistakes, but I was very heavily punished.
Am I going to have to deal with many other horrible TA's in the future as well? I've been fairly fortunate so far.

Re: The Official Talk About Whatever Thread
I had one bad experience like that but for the most part I always had tutors/lecturers who were very fair. It obviously depends on the institution but you'll probably find that it's not a common thread throughout your tuition. Hope this next paper works out well for you!

Re: The Official Talk About Whatever Thread
Finally got internet set up at new apartment :').
Chose TPG first because it was cheapest, put in application on February 24, they estimated 10-20 working days to get a technician in.
I get an email on the 9th of March, telling me there are no vacant pairs at the exchange, which doesn't make sense because the previous tenants only just moved out, and they're not allowed to steal copper pairs or something unless the line has been inactive for 6 months.
I call them up about it, they say that they can put in the application again on the 13th, for another 10-20 days waiting for installation...
So I give up on them and tell them I'm swapping to Belong, they tell me that it's an issue at the exchange and Belong won't make a difference, now four days later ... internet :')
tl;dr TPG are molasses.
