But when wanders forward, he leaves gaps behind and due to this the opposition finds it easy to initiate counter attacks. Now i dont know if he does this on Wenger's instructions, in which case it is ok. Since i do not know that, i will assume he joins the attack on his own accord and as a DM i will stop short of calling WC because of that.

IMO , Song venturing forward was as per Wenger's instructions .The effect was mixed , Song did manage to get a few decisive goals , particularly in early season . He did cost the team a few times too.

According to the general consensus among Arsenal fans I know , the tactic should be used selectively . It can be useful against the teams that play for the draw and park the bus , not so much against the bigger teams .

As strange as it sounds, Arsenal don't play with a out-right defensive midfielder anymore. We basically play two CM's and an AM and both of those CM's have the same responsibilities. I'm relatively certain that Song's tendency to get forward is actually Wenger asking him to and not Song being indisciplined in his positioning.

++.

Song has too many defensive lapses and loses stamina in games and at the end of the season... You love him because you can see how hard he tries on the pitch and he does some nice things.

But he needs to understand that he's a defensive player first. Must take more pride in keeping a clean sheet for the goaltender than assisting to create a goal. Once he masters the defensive part, he'll be top notch.

Mickel is not even worth mentioning. I do not rate him at all.

Jon Obi Mikel was once an AM , and a very highly rated one .

Rewind 6 years .

U-20 WC Final . Argentina vs Nigeria . Built up as a clash between the two best players in the tournament - Jon Obi Mikel vs Lionel Messi .

After the tournament Messi won the golden ball , Mikel was voted second best .

Back to present

The general consensus is Mikel is an average/good Anchorman .

The footballing world will now never now how good an AM he probably could have been .
