I still fail to understand how 'submitting an official transfer request' makes a move to Chelsea that much more likely, IF Everton do not want to sell.

The only thing that would make sense is that Everton are resigned to selling him but want him to hand in such a request first, for reasons of face saving etc
The general reasoning is that a formal request waives any loyalty fee owed to player and makes it a concern to club about unsettling squad unity by keeping him against his will.  It's sort of a more legitimate way to do what Sterling did earlier this summer.

Ok, but the concern to the club , about an 'unsettled' player, is there anyway the moment a player wants out.
So if a club decides to insist on not selling him and on him fulfilling his contract, I don't see how the player making it 'official' he wants to move changes THAT much.
He was 'unsettled already before making request, he still is under contract after making the request. Basically nothing changes at all except publicity.

If Everton want to keep him, they should keep him request or not.
No player is going to sulk for a whole season.

You're absolutely right to a degree, Hans. A very big part of a formal transfer request's influence is indeed the PR effect. However, it's far from the only part of that.

Obviously, each and every potential transfer situation is different and thus when a player's situation passes a "point of no return" varies. That said, a formal transfer request is generally (though seemingly less so in recent years) considered something of a red line. In large part, this is indeed due to a sort of "PR" effect... the player is formally announcing that he wishes to break ties with the club and all its accompanying parties (fans, squadmates, manager, etc) in permanent documentation. It's significantly more difficult to spin or backtrack from this and even if/when said player stays, and even potentially succeeds, at his current club that request will be a permanent mark. This is further empowered by the fact that the player is waiving the seemingly (and oddly, IMO) ubiquitous loyalty bonus that players tend to receive when they transfer before the end of their contracts. Particularly for clubs like Everton that have aspirations of competing well above their general budget level this can be a big deal.

PR absolutely is an influential part of a formal transfer request but its far from the only part.

Sky reporting that Milan are interested in Moutinho.

Pls let this be true, he's exactly what we need in our midfield

Fair enough.

Sorry to belabour the point, and not that I disagree with your characterisation of it.
Still I don't really get the fuzz. It makes no sense to me that this would really be a thing.

Fans, squadmates, manager know a player wants to move anyway.
Do they think Chelsea make bids for him without having checked with his agent he's willing to join?!

And I mean it's not like his teammates will now not talk to him from today on, because of his OFFICIAL 'transfer request'.

The reporting seems a bit silly, that's all.

As in BBC -
Everton have been insistent that John Stones would not be sold to Chelsea - but the landscape has shifted significantly after the 21-year-old England defender handed in a transfer request.
http://www.bbc.com/sport/live/3359018

Doesn't make any sense. The landscape hasn't shifted at all.

Oh well.

The Independent for some reason has decided to be more terrible in transfer reporting than any other 'respectable' British paper. Really strange. A bit uncalled for.

Thought we were trying to sell Gervinho to West Ham and Ljajic to Aston Villa?

Either Italian or English (or both) sources got their wingers mixed up. How that happens, I know not Laughing

Think he's talented, more so than what they have in forward areas outside of Kane. But he's one of those who will look like a god for a couple of games then go missing for the next 8.

Needs to be more consistent to be worth that fee.

No doubt he has talent, but he's never been good enough to move to a top team, I hardly think he'll improve Spurs, especially for the same money we got Pedro for.
