Legends World Cup Empty Legends World Cup

Can you imagine getting to watch the likes of Zinedine Zidane, Paolo Maldini, Fernando Hierro and David Beckham doing battle again with a World Cup at stake? Well, from January 2017 you won't have to imagine it, because this nostalgist's dream is set to come true.

The first Legends World Cup will take place over two weeks of January 2017 in Mexico. It will be open to players aged between 35 and 45, which provides plenty of scope to see some of the greatest ever back in action.

It will be a 12-team tournament, with four groups of three and games played at four host cities. Reportedly, Europe will have six representatives - Germany, Spain, France, the Netherlands, England and Italy - with four from the Americas (Argentina, Brazil, USA and Mexico) and Japan and South Africa rounding off the line-up. Matches will be 11-a-side and last an hour.

The Aspire Academy and the Dutch sports marketing firm World Sport Company are said to be the organisers. They have spent over a year working on the event, which they envisage being staged every two years and being broadcast across all five continents.
