It gets rumoured every generation but it might finally be the gen where we just get upgraded consoles every now and then like PCs instead of full blown consoles every 6 or 7 years.

I can't run Witcher 3 in 4K (maxed out). I'd have to buy another €730 980 TI which is money I'm spending on a Vive or a 1440p high refresh rate ultrawide (still €1300 ). My current set-up can run Witcher 3 at 2560x1080 at 50-60fps maxed (with 100 FOV though). I could maybe run 4K with console equivalent settings.

It's seriously not a hyperbole or even exaggeration when I say the XBone and PS4 are ghetto laptops.

This "PS4K" would have to be at least 4* times more powerful to run the games the PS4 currently struggles to run at 1080i. VR also increases requirements by a factor of 4 since you need to push 120fps for VR that doesn't cause simulation sickness.

In all reality we're still 2 GPU generations away from 4K being reachable by those PC gamers who go for the "sweet spot" - the €250-€300 price bracket with the best price/performance (currently GTX 970/R9 390. We're still 5-6 years away from a €120 750TI tier card (console equivalent) being able to run 4K.

All in all I think the rumour of a PS4K is complete BS. Sure they might give it the capability to output in 4K but the downgrade in every single other aspect of the game would mean devs would just not use it - all it would be is a marketing sham - like the PS3 and 1080p. It would probably just end up being a 4K Bluray player and play the 30FPS PS4 games at 60fps.


On a side note: I seriously don't know why Sony is even joining in on the VR hype - "acceptable" VR requires a €2400 investment on the PC side. I really don't see how VR can be anything more than an expensive gimmick on the PS4; Sony is trying to make something mainstream that hasn't even been available for enthusiasts/early adopters. All Sony is going end up doing is turn the mainstream off VR since it's not even ready for mainstream...

Fun fact: My 980TI alone draws twice as much electricity as an entire PS4 and 6 times its GPU. That heat has to go somewhere and the PS4 is already jet engine levels of noise.

Yeah I did a bit of research and the likelihood probably is that it will run indie games in 4K but the rest will probably look like this......

900p/30 becoming 1080p/30,
1080p/30 becoming 1080p/60, or if we are lucky
1080p/60 Medium/High becoming 1080/60 Ultra

I'd still likely do that though, the idea of having Witcher 3 in 60 FPS instead of 30 alone would be worth it.
