Actually heard that one but forgot it. There's also a new song out on Spotify called "two birds, one stone"
Seems like a new album is coming in december.

Re: The Offical Rap Thread Part 3
I stand by my opinion.
Drake is one of the best mainstream lyrical rappers of the new generation. I don't take underground rappers into account, because I rarely listen to them.
Even Fabolous (considered lyrical genius by hip hop heads) on Sway's show mentioned that he thinks Cole and Drake are the best new generation rappers with their words.
Of course though Drake has his farts some times with lines like, "Got so many chains, they call me Channing Tatum".

Well I disagree with that completely.
Drake isn't one of the best lyricists around because he isn't a lyricist. At all.
He is a wordplay, punchline rapper. HUGE difference from being a lyricist. That's like saying Big Sean is a lyricist because of all the punchlines he uses in his "raps".
Also, Fabulous isn't considered a lyrical genius. Where the hell did that come from? His wordplay and punchlines are clever and witty, huge difference from being a lyricist.
Do people know the difference between a lyricist and punchline rapper?
I'm yet to hear ANYBODY tell me or say that they listen to Drake for his lyrics.

I listen to Drake because he is one of the more complete rappers. He has a bit of everything going for him.
Define lyricism for me then.

I don't see how a video of Fabulous saying that dispels my point.
I could post a article of Royce Da 5'9 Saying Drake isn't a lyricist, so?
Why don't you tell me why Drake is a lyricist? Please inform of his level of lyricism?
Please tell me how he has shown the ability to construct the simplest of sentences and have them paint a picture?
Or how he is able to tell a story with his lyrics that can paint vivid pictures with his words?
The ability to play with his words, in a way that the words don't even rhyme or make sense but his ability to use them makes it sound dope as fck.
That's not Drake. He is a punchline rapper who goes for the quick hit so the line would stick in your head and then follow that up with some odd noise or some catch hook. That's fine. Similar to Big Sean or Lil Wayne.
But to call him a lyricist? No way.
Why you gotta fight with me at Cheesecake?
You know I love to go there
Say I'm actin' lightskin, I can't take you nowhere
This a place for families that drive Camrys and go to Disney
They don't need to know all of our business
You wildin', you super childish, you go to CVS for Kotex
In my Bugatti, I took the key and tried to hide it
So you can't drive it, and put on mileage
Then you find it, awkward silence
Momma is a saint, yes, she raised me real good
All because of her I don't do you like I should
Don't make me give you back to the hood
Don't make me give you back

Re: The Offical Rap Thread Part 3
I'm not going into this argument to dispel your opinions on Drake, izzy. All I'm doing is defending my point. That video was the show you that someone who is in the game and knows the game says Drake is a top lyricist. Surely that means something. If Royce Da 5'9" disagrees with that, then that's also good. He's as much in the game as Fabolous is, so what ever floats your boat is what I would say. Just then don't come and laugh at my opinions, when there are many other people out there who would agree with me.
Why are you dodging my question by hitting it back at me? It seems like you might not be sure what lyricism is.
Anyway, you know what, I won't dodge questions, I'll go ahead and tell you what I understand from lyricism. Lyricism is the technique of forming a lyrical story through careful constructed use of lyrical cues such as wordplay and emotive expressions.
What you are referring to, from my understanding, is storytelling. And yes, Drake is not the best storyteller out there as most of his music only concerns a certain range of subject matter. The best storytellers have great range imo, and are able to construct long, meaningful and social/political pieces together, eg: Nas.

this is what I consider storytelling. Storytelling doesn't necessarily = lyricism in its complete form.izzy wrote:Please tell me how he has shown the ability to construct the simplest of sentences and have them paint a picture?

Storytelling? I mentioned being able to tell a story only once in what I described as lyricism...... What do the other two elements I named have to do with storytelling? Maybe it is the way I structured them, but clearly I pointed out 3 different elements and you only addressed one.
izzy wrote:1. The ability to play with his words, in a way that the words don't even rhyme or make sense but his ability to use them makes it sound dope as fck.

I specifically have bolded No.1 for a reason. I clearly wrote there "an ability to play with words"......... word play.......play with words........ same thing.
Not only did you only address one, you then went on to say this:
El Gunner wrote:Lyricism is the technique of forming a lyrical story through careful constructed use of lyrical cues such as wordplay and emotive expressions.
The word "story" again is something brought up, so if you see an ability to tell a story as something that is important to lyricism and Drake is not good at it (your words) how can he be a top lyricist?
I mentioned wordplay and how Drake is good at but I also said how that is not lyricism:
izzy wrote:He is a wordplay, punchline rapper. HUGE difference from being a lyricist. That's like saying Big Sean is a lyricist because of all the punchlines he uses in his "raps".
What I should have added is that, Drake does 1 of 3 things well imo that you need to be considered to be a top lyricist and if you can only do 1 of 3 well, then how you a top lyricist?

Re: The Offical Rap Thread Part 3
That's just your opinion of lyricism then mate and how Drake fits to those 3 categories. You're allowed to have your opinion, I disagree with you and Fabolous and many others out there disagree with you as well.
And Drake is able to story-tell, in fact he is good at it (stop twisting my words), he is just not at the same level as the top storytellers. And I said storytelling is a part of lyricism, not lyricism in its entirety.

Re: The Offical Rap Thread Part 3
While Fabolous is a legend in the game, his words becomes automatic null when he mentioned Drake, as one of the two top lyricist of this generation. It's matter of fact an insult to call Drake a "singing n" one of the best lyricist of this generation when he was exposed for having a ghost writer.
One of Drake's biggest song. Ghostwritten
Another one
This is just the 2 we know of and now Drake fired him. Just imagine what other song he ghostwrote for Drake.
