Loris Karius Empty Loris Karius

Post by iftikhar Fri Jul 08, 2016 6:40 pm

Loris Karius completed the formalities of a transfer to Liverpool on May 24, 2016, with the goalkeeper joining the Reds on a long-term deal after an impressive run of performances in the Bundesliga.

The stopper’s progress properly took off following a move to Jürgen Klopp’s former club Mainz in 2011, though his development as a youngster had already involved spells with several domestic sides and, notably, Manchester City.

Born in the southern town of Biberach, Karius represented FV Biberach, SG Mettenberg, SSV Ulm 1846 and Stuttgart at youth level – before an early move to England beckoned for the 6ft2 custodian.

Having been picked out by City’s scouts, he joined the Manchester club in the summer of 2009 and featured for their U18s and U21s, but never for the first team.

Instead it was at Mainz where Loris would earn senior recognition, with a debut arriving in December 2012 as a second-half substitute during a 2-1 home victory against Hannover in the Bundesliga.

There were no further appearances in that season but Karius’ promotion to first-choice at Coface Arena came in 2013-14, when he clocked up 23 matches in the league.

His agility and reactions in shot-stopping, as well as impressive awareness and composure around the penalty area, belied his relatively young age for a ‘keeper and the transition to top-flight football was smooth.

Loris missed just one Bundesliga fixture in the following campaign as Mainz consolidated their mid-table position, and he was subsequently ever-present – playing every single minute – in the recently-completed 2015-16 season.

Nine clean sheets, including a vital one against Hertha Berlin on the final day, helped his team rise to sixth place in the standings and secure qualification for the Europa League on goal difference.

Such was his personal form, in fact, that a Kicker magazine survey saw 235 Bundesliga players vote Karius as the second-best goalkeeper in the division, behind only Manuel Neuer with 13.6 per cent of the total.

Shouldn't that actually be a indirect free kick for Wigan if he goes for the ball wiith the hand after the botched touch?

So he got his first start. Had fumble and couple of good saves. OK then, onward and upward. I feel Klopp needs to find some game time for him.

He'll be fine. Even the 'mistakes' he's made the last two games haven't really been glaring errors. He's been more unlucky than bad for those IMO, plus it's still his first season and he's very young. He's shown flashes of being a fantastic keeper. Don't always be so quick to pass judgment on players.

It's pretty astounding how eager some fans are to badmouth and turn on their own players?
I wonder what's the gain in that?

Shame on Carragher btw for his clownish shit

De Gea made a worse mistake against West Ham the other week.

What are you guys even talking about? Karius didn't have to do anything at all with the goals?

Yeah no one blames him for the second one, The first one is a bit ambiguous, Its not too hard to deflect blame from keepers in 90% situations.

Even the last goal against Bournemouth was just scapegoating. Look at how hard the shot was from Cook and it bounced right in front of Karius. If he had caught that it would have been ridiculous. It's the fault of the defenders for not being ready to clean up the ball wherever it went after Karius stopped it. You can argue that he could have tried to push the ball away but he could have just as easily pushed it into his own net from where he was. Tough position to be in.

But yeah, I don't know why people are blaming Karius at all for the game against West Ham. It had nothing to do with him really. He made a couple nice plays actually.

The Bournemouth goal where he let the ball bounce was very hard to solve. Obviously such a situation (letting a ball bounce for an attacker to pounce) will always be counted as a GK mistake, and as you said ideally he'd get the ball out of danger, but this one was pretty tough.
I distinctly remember feeling at that moment that Karius would not be able to control shot, it was too forceful.
The blame goes on all the field player for completely collapsing by that point, and they'd been phoing it in snince minute 22 already.

And even then, bestest keeper in the world De Gea made a similar mistake the week before from a situation that should have been easier to solve, even if it was a Payet free kick too.

the payet free kick was dead centre of the goal so why did he set the wall up to the right and take up a position to his left. he got a weak hand to the shot but had he been in the centre of his goal he could have cought the ball.

If you're going to blame Karius with regards to dropped points, for not stopping that free kick, you'll need to blame everyone of your attackers too who didn't put each half-decent chance into the net.

Because think about it. This is not even a goalie mistake by any stretch, it's just a free kick that might be 'saveable'. It is possible to save it, and maybe Karius would in another instance.

If you blame that for dropped points, what about every chance that is 'convertable'? You know, that is possible to score from? Attackers waste quite a few of those every game.

I don't mean sitters - wasting a sitter should accordingly be treated like a huge GK blunder which gifts a goal on its own.

the thing is making mistakes like that knocks the confidence of our team and gives confidence to the other team. we went from 1-0 up and looking like spanking them to 1-1 and them right back in the game. the Bournemouth player came out after the game and said we knew the keeper was the weak spot in the team so we just fired shots at him because we knew he would spill them. now if Bournemouth players are thinking that then our defenders must be thinking that.

So how do you feel about this guy, eh? Featured 17 times so far since his signing.

Mignolet isn't a great GK, by any stretch of imagination. But if he can comfortably keep Karius benched, that's very disconcerting.
