Sorry... but doing well in confederation's cup (that nobody cares about) and Brazilian league (basically on par with Russian league) doesn't awe anyone.  It was all hype with Neymar.

Bale...  he scored 20 goals for the spurs and he was labeled as the world's best player lol.  Spurs finished 3rd too.  Other than that, he had a big game against Inter 2 years earlier and was never heard from again.  In fact, when Spurs played Madrid in the next round, you wouldn't even know he played Laughing  All hype.  Suarez was robbed.

Martial... ok

Pogba...  highest BdO voted player in Serie A the past 2 years.  Golden Boy winner last year as the best young player in the world.  Coincidence that France suddenly became solid in the midfield when he came up when they were an utter disaster in the middle of the pitch before that.  Stats have gone up every season... and finished with 9 goals/15 assists this past season.  Both Barca and Bayern fans will tell you his was the biggest menace on Juve when they played Juve.  Been a star for Juve for 3+ years.

Anyhow.... seems like the football world appreciates him.  Based on media, Madrid were willing to offer the transfer fee, but not the wage of Man U.  So Madrid did value him at 100+ mil.  Barca's bid of 85 mil was rejected last summer as was City's bid of 80 mil last summer too.  PSG offered massive amounts, but was rejected because he didn't rate Ligue 1.

Really, it's not one team who's been after him.  EVERYONE has.  Man U just outbid everyone.

I have seen countless people asking this exact same question. Which big games can anyone say Pogba was clear motm and played like a 120 million player? No body knows.

Raiola: Pogba Will Complete Manchester United Switch Next Week...

A transfer to Manchester United for Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba will be completed next week, according to his agent, Mino Raiola.

It was already reported that the French international will soon travel to England to complete a medical for the Red Devils, and striker Paulo Dybala looks set to take over as the wearer of the number 10 shirt in Turin, and all that is missing is just the final confirmation, which Raiola has announced should be next week.

“Next week we can seal the deal,” he told La Stampa.

United are expected to pay a world-record fee of €110 million for the 23-year-old, who will earn €12m per year over the course of a five-year contract.

Juventus have already been looking at a trio of Manchester United players as possible replacements for their star man.

Opinion: Paul Pogba Will Never Be Worth His Mooted £100 Million Transfer Fee...

The deal doesn’t seem to be done yet. Not officially anyway. But the signs are it will happen. Juventus have already spent the majority of the profits for one thing. Paul Pogba is likely to return to Manchester United any day now. For £100 million. Just writing the pound sign and using numbers doesn’t give it gravity. One hundred million pounds.

So, is Pogba worth it? Will he ever be?

Just as important a question though; where did the figure come from? You could be forgiven for thinking this is a deal between Manchester United and Mino Raiola, such is the part played by Pogba’s notorious agent. Juventus are barely mentioned. I’m glad they spent £76 million on Gonzalo Higuain because it reminded me that they were involved.

All of the talk has come from Raiola. You could forgive Juve for their silence. Raiola is working it. He’s persuaded Manchester United to spend one hundred million pounds to buy back a player they lost for almost nothing four years ago. Raiola broke into United’s jewellery box and stole their prized trinket. Now he’s selling it back to them at three times its market value. The old lady of Turin is struggling to keep a straight face.

So why such a high figure? Pogba was instrumental in Juve’s march to the Champions League final in the 2014/15 season. Last season, domestically, he improved. But on the biggest stage? Not so much. To be a one hundred million pound player, you’ve got to be one of the very top players in the world. Is he the best French player right now? Euro 2016 would suggest not. The best player in Serie A? There are one or two who would beg to differ, Higuain for instance. The best player at Juventus? Leonardo Bonucci would have something to say about that.

Where did he come in the voting for the 2015 Ballon d’Or? 15th. With 0.72% of the votes. One hundred million pounds.

It’s a marketing campaign of staggering audacity carried out, chiefly, by Mino Raiola. And it’s a successful one. Pogba has the iconic hair, and the iconic-sounding name. He’s a Nike Exec’s wet dream. Would the same player be valued at this figure if his name was Steve Smith and he came sporting a short back and sides?

Whilst undoubtedly talented, Pogba is 23. Yes, he will improve further, but he’s not a prospect. He is close to the finished article. For that kind of money, fans will expect an immediate pay-off.

At Euro 2016, he was the player expected to make the biggest impact for the hosts. There were flashes of his ability, just like there were during Juve’s biggest Champions League games last season. But when the pressure was on, Pogba struggled. Will ‘flashes of brilliance’ be enough to pay back the investment? His compatriot, and former ‘most expensive player in the world’, Zinedine Zidane could take whole tournaments by the scruff of the neck, let alone individual matches.

Is it unfair to judge him against as great a player as Zidane? Quite possibly, but that price tag does it automatically. One hundred million pounds.

Also, is United the right place to go? The task is made tougher having quit the club four years ago. Fans will be quick to judge. They’ve seen a few decent midfielders over the years. Will he ever be better than Paul Scholes?

_____

And what of José Mourinho? Pogba is at his best when given licence to get forward. When has Mourinho ever given a player ‘licence’ of any kind? If you dare to be audacious and fail or don’t put a shift in when you haven’t got the ball in Mourinho’s side, you’re out.

Pogba, of course, never asked for this. The price tag is set by the selling club, or as it seems in this case, the agent. He is just a young man who wants to play football. And he does it well. But this week he is likely to go down as the most expensive football player in history. It is a huge burden to bear. Will he ever escape that price tag? It is scary whichever way it’s written.

One hundred million pounds.

I don't think Pogba gives a rat's arse about what people think about his pricetag...  it was perfect for him.  He's getting massive wages, his marketing is through the roof because of the hype and, due to his cost, the club he's going to has no choice but to cater to him.

It's a win-win for Pogba however you look at it.  Raiola did his job masterfully.

No disagreeing with that. Pogba does come across as someone who cares only about himself and can unabashedly and vociferously milk his good fortune with no care in the world for both the Juve fans and the ManU fans (and the France fans for that matter). He is certainly a perfect candidate to be a Mino Raiola player. One of his most famous clients is Zlatan Ibrahimovic. So Pogba is certainly on the right track.

Anyway I am really pleased to read that Raiola has finally said the deal will be done. For heaven's sake just get this deal over with so that the transfer market can move further. I am keen to see who Juventus target and get for their midfield. It will be a relief when this deal is finally official and the Pogba rumors and social media posts can stop boring me.

Neymar - It depends who sees it how. I think stepping up in a tournament that has champions of all continents and the reigning world champions is rather special. That was the first time I became impressed by him since I do not watch South American football. He not only impressed but also won player of the tournament.

Bale - In the season in which he won the league's best player he pretty much carried Spurs on his back.

Anyway as I said before the real comparison is with midfielders. So I repeat my question. Why were midfielders like Fabregas, Silva and Ozil never hyped as much as this guy?

One more thing to clarify. I am not against Pogba enjoying his good fortune but I think there are quite a few reasons why he shouldn't flaunt it.

1. He is leaving the club that gave him a huge opportunity when he was essentially a nobody.

2. He is not only going back to a club he left for free but also costing them a king's ransom.

3. He was the bookies' choice for player of the tournament before Euro 2016 began. He ended up having an underwhelming tournament as part of a team that lost the final on home soil.

1. H's bringing in 100 million to Juve.  That's thanks enough.  They sold him and were able to pay for Higuain and Pjanic.  It's business.

2. That's on Man U.  When the opportunity arose to play him, they chose Cleverley and even brought Scholes out of retirement for depth.  There was no immediate opportunity for him so he left.

3. He sacrificed for the team and played as a defensive B2B on the right as opposed to an offensive B2B on the left that he plays for Juve.  Why?  Matuidi can't play on the right to save his life and Griezmann is at his best when he plays in the 10 role behind the CF.  Everything he did for France was to help the team to the detriment of his own personal performance... and he did it without complaining once.  Griezmann complained early on that he wasn't being played like he preferred when Pogba had his best game playing on the left and attacking against Switzerland. Didn't work because Matuidi was crap and Griezmann invisible.  Pogba didn't say a word when he was switched back. He saw that the team needed him to play there.

Build Up: Pogba to United - Page 34 Empty Re: Build Up: Pogba to United

Post by titosantill Sun Jul 31, 2016 7:29 pm

fabregas, silva and ozil were all in their mid 20s before their major transfers. silva came off the back of a good, not great valencia career, and villa was the main attraction on that team. silva was his robin.

fabregas, a good arsenal career, was probably the main guy, but barcelona's obsession for "barca dna" meant not many sides were actively looking for fabregas; different from pogba where three or four sides have shown interest and some have probably tabled in bids

ozil, older than pogba at the time of his madrid exit, maybe by like 2 years, but also had a reputation of gassing out after 55-60 minutes of football. something mourinho twice complained about, once he lamented why players couldn't be fit to play 2 games in a week, he was talking about ozil. also the biggest distinction; ozil was deemed surplus by madrid and ancelotti, you hardly get hyped when you're deemed surplus to requirement

none of those three players where coming off the back of successive domestic league success at a young age, and that plays a part. btw fabregas was really hyped, especially that whole summer where it felt like this was a police tv show, with all the talk of dna. just that only one team was going gaga over him, and they ended up discarding him like an ugly step-child only two yrs later.

1. Fans don't get the money in their hands. They care about their players, At least some fans care about certain players. There are some players in my team whom if you had taken in their prime to another club I would feel deep anguish even if you gave the club one billion euros for one of them. Now if Pogba did not have one single fan at Juve that cared that much for him then it's a different matter.

2. Not saying he shouldn't have left since he did that for his career but the going back I feel should be much more humble.

3. Appreciate that and agree with it. I do not fault him that much for this performances. Taking the final for example I was really surprised to see Matuidi going forward and Pogba staying behind. Did Deschamps dictate that? Anyway at the end of the day results matter. For whatever reasons it was an underwhelming tournament for Pogba and collectively he was part of a team that lost a major final and that too on home soil.

In just my view Pogba has been behaving like a Z grade celebrity who is a bit too eager to flaunt on his arm the latest starlet willing to give him the light of day.

Yeah that was on Deschamps... once Kante wasn't starting, Pogba moved into his slot.    The thing was the Griezmann was on fire so Deschamps really set things up to put him in the best conditions.  He tried putting Matuidi on the right so that freed Pogba up on the left, but Matuidi was just awful on the right.

The only way Pogba is played at his optimal place is if Matuidi is benched... and that may be coming.  It depends on Kante and Rabiot.  I can see either easily taking his place.

And think about this... Pogba is making 4.5 mil net at Juve. He will be making 13 mil net + image rights of 7 mil gross at Man U. He would be a special level of stupid not to jump on that. The difference is massive. It's his profession.
