Well, lets be honest here. Ronaldo has the balon d'or written all over it.. If for nothing, because its a trophy portugal had never won before (even if I admit he wasn't the best player by any stretch of the imagination) and because he single handedly won the wolfsburg game for madrid on their way to winning the CL. Not necessarily because he was the best player in the calender year. I remember madrid fans calling for perez to sell him to psg not long ago last season.

The BDO has never being for the best players in the world so to speak generally, its a trophy that's reserved for those who actually did something worthwhile throughout the course of the year. If not, messi would have kept on winning the BDO for the last 9 years and easily too.

Having said that, a part of me still tells me that if ronaldo could win it in 2013, then, there's nothing stopping messi from pulling off an upset this year. In fact, I'm willing to bet that messi would actually pip CR7 to the award this year if he goes on a tear between now and november. Never overestimate the memory management of football fans (coaches/captains), we seem to remember more fondly the recent events tbh and that has a way of affecting our decisions. This is human nature and its present in every human endeavor.

Lmao. If we're going a step lower, then err, ever heard of suarez? and you do know bale had a total of 0 goals in the CL, madrid's only trophy last season? Neither did he play in the Euro super cup. He also won nothing for wales while not even being their best player nor was he the highest goal scorer. Infact he didn't even score a knock out round goal or give any assists iirc.

As for suarez, well check this out, 59 goals, la liga, copa del rey, pinchichi, spanish super cup. How bout that?

Bale has been fantastic this year. Better than Ronaldo IMO, but Ronaldo has the numbers and the accolades to probably take it again.
