Ridiculous decision.

First cup this loser club win in god knows how long with a mediocre squad and they sack him as if some next coach or primavera maestro will fix it.

Mourinho being in the club also brings a higher profile to the club as it is.

Italian clubs suck at replacements too these days as Napoli bringing in Mazzarri was just hilarious.

Wasn't expecting him to get sacked now but to leave in the summer.

I don't know how much better Roma can do this season in terms of results. In terms of play though, Mou had them playing some awful stuff.

His only managerial stint was with SPAL which was terrible and going to guess because oh Roma experience, leadership, morale boost etc and all that intangible BS.

Mourinho is done as a top manager and he carries a dramatic reputation, we know it was only going downhill from now on. I think Roma took the right decision in order to maybe save their season.

De Rossi is hired as interim coach and he got some professional coaching experience (unlike Pirlo's failed experiment at Juve) i predict he'll get decent results and he'll extend beyond june 2024, similar to what Gattuso did a few years ago

Seriously though, how should his Roma career be assessed? All I know is 9th n knocked out of the cup by rivals. Conference Cup n a Europa League final, but that sounds alright I guess but compared with the past, Romas aims are higher? Hence the sack?

De Rossi absolutely flopped in SPAL and did not even get a full year. Pirlo's year is barely a failure given it was his first stint as a coach and at a top club (top, not being Roma) and he is to replace a manager that won the conference league and was in the EL final with a very iffy officiating result.

I dont know wtf Roma expect given they spent close to nothing on him and left him with an average squad as a whole.

Mou brought a trophy and that will not be forgotten at Roma. Had he won the EL final even more so.

His league results are poor, he underperformed there. Good cup poor league manager in his stint. Unsustainable for Roma.

Naw Arq, I think any job the asshole gets he is lucky to receive. His time as a top coach has long since past and he will never last at any job more than 3 years. As to your point about Roma should have spent money to help him! That’s the type of jobs he will be getting. Clubs that are at least a tier lower and don’t have a budget to build a lineup. Welcome to 2nd division and conference league futbol!

Prime Mou was GOAT, shame he became such a dinosaur. That Roma is trash though, I hardly blame him. Problem is he can't overachieve in the league anymore, he will bring a team about where it belongs but still overachieve in cups.

I personally believe that Madrid team that lost in CL semis to Bayern on penalties was the best and most effective team of all time.

But the ball is round and anything can happen, so that loss will always deny that team it's flowers. Also I think they lost the Copa to Barca.

Sad times for Roma rn. I personally think he could easily have brought Roma back to CL had he been a bit more lucky and would probs have a slightly better squad on him rn had that penalty been marked but alas here we are. Losing Smalling and Ibanez costed him dearly honestly. Roma have not been able to form a solid backline this season and with a manager like Mou to even have a chance a the big trophies you need that. Here's hoping they land Dragusin or some uprising CBs regardless at least.

I'm gonna go against the grain and say that this firing was warranted. I've been saying these past 2 years that Mourinho didn't raise their ceiling at all and that Roma are in the exact same spot they were in under Fonseca, ie hovering between 7th and 6th in the league and always losing to to the other teams in the top 6.

That mickey mouse continental title really masked how underwhelming his tenure was.

Somehow Mourinho became likable later in his coaching career, so I was lowkey rooting for Roma. But I have to agree with farfan that he never elevated the team to better results than what they've been achieving anyway.

I wonder if he wants another job or to retire. Or semi-retire until there's a vacancy at the Portugal NT.

they could and probably should have won the EL final last year, would have been in the CL this season, squad looks dross largely. I feel like he had to have been strongly disliked by management and owners though because it's weird to sack him 5 pts off top 4 halfway into the season. I don't think Roma do any better without him and he was a draw for some players moving there.

That said I've watched Roma a few times under him and its even uglier than watching United lol, so bad. I think his time is 100% up at big name clubs though, international duty now or sellout in Saudi. Maybe Newcastle? or he moves to France to a Marseille or something. Legendary manager but completely past it. Game left him behind. Happens.

Roma will continue to be poor though as I said, squad is poop.

I remember being a Mou fanatic at one point. My namesake. He was "him", he was so larger than life, confrontational, biting, and witty that he seemed like the real life Dr. Gregory House. But Dr. House wouldn't be Dr. House if he wasn't a genius who at the end of the day justified the means by solving the medical puzzles and in the end Mourinho ceased being able to solve a number of puzzles quite a long time ago.

I would be curious to know why someone as seemingly brilliant as he once was with tactics and player management wasn't only not able to evolve but seemingly devolved and imploded again and again and again. Ya ya, we all know the typical bullet points, but his downfall is quite steep, and I find it fascinating.

In my eyes Mourinho died on a Wednesday, back in April 25 2012.

If he had reached the 2012 CL final you would figure Madrid would have won it, and all things and storylines considered at that time, it would have been a type of monumental glory for him that I find difficult to put into words. Bigger on a managerial legacy level even than Guardiola's Man City CL. Definitely.

He was never again seen after that day.

Isn't Marseille the club where the ultras have regular check ins with the coach? Most south American club in France. Would be interesting to see how Mou handled that

I honestly haven't paid much attention to Roma this season (well not the men's side anyway), but from what I have seen, the writing was on the wall and has been for a while now. The fire that won us the UECL is gone and I don't think it was coming back. I personally would've just kept him until the summer, but I can only speculate that something said or done internally facilitated the need for this to be done sooner rather than later. I'm sure we'll learn more.

As for the DDR hiring. It's temporary and I frankly don't expect him to get any longer than the 6 months he's been given here unless he somehow transforms this team, which is highly improbable. What surprises me about this is that the Friedkins aren't known for making decisions based purely on romanticism or emotion. This is something I would've expected from Pallotta or even the Sensis, but not this current ownership group. That's ultimately also why I think this is super temporary. I think back to when Vincenzo Montella took over briefly. Same situation.

How some ppl find him likable is beyond me... I mean all the arrogant comments boasting about his own past achievements like 10 yrs ago hanging onto those despite being shit for so long? All the excuses n nothing is his fault, all the drama n negativity he generates... that post match face in that Man U win was such a symbol of him Very Happy

I really thought at one point when he beat Barca is that '11-12 season n Pep quit that he was shown to be the better coach, but at the cost to so many other things. Glad Pep proving eventually that Mous ways dont work long term. He was also so full of it when at the top, this is karma Very Happy

Just goes to show one should always have some humility...

I honestly feel that team would have bulldozed any Carlo or Zidane side. I know many won't agree, but that is how I feel.
