Barca suffocates him because we don't provide him the proper support in the midfield. He has no space and no passing options. We need to hustle and support the ball holder immediately. Last year, we had too much real estate between the midfielders and their passing options. Barca doesn't allow enough time to look up and send longer passes... need to rely on several shorter ones to get from the defense to the attack imo.

He (along with two other players IMO) is pretty much the foundation of our team. I'm convinced we wouldn't be half as good with out him.

But even he can't do it alone in midfield despite his best efforts (he came a lot closer than anyone else imo as far as creating chances goes). Sahin or Ozil (or both?) helping him out in midfield along with Sami would make a beast midfield that would bring the best out of him.

honestly, and i know i'm in the minority here, i didn't think Xabi was all that great other than the goal.

He's very important to us. But his lack of speed is worse this year.

What he lacks in speed in makes up in so much more.
I love the way he dictates the midfield, his vision for the pass, and always maintaining his cool.

His goal was crucial and the immediately out weighed his performance.

How can he gain something he never had in the 1st place? Alonso was always slow and would continue to be slow. He obviously makes up for it by excellent positioning and anticipation. His tackling has gotten worse gradually though...
