if Sanchez could finish Messi would have atleast 5+ assists, so many 1v1 situations Messi spoon fed him, let alone the runs Pedro never ran didn't help either.

Assists are crap for that reason and others anyway, don't get know why they have importance.

Those through balls Xavi and Messi create are main reasons we win (mind you if we have a good finisher) so I disagree that they have no importance.

Except not every assist is a throughball, not every great one end in an assist...before even making the pass equally important stuff comes before it...keeping count of them make no sense when only 3 or 4 players are ever consistenty in a position to do so.

Fully agree. This was my feeling since the beginning. I never understand why they have so much importance. There is no measure of another most important thing: playmaking. Its disappointing even for the tapin goals where all the credits goes to score/assist and a great playmaking get shadowed.
I can clearly remember a personal interview of Xavi abt 2 yrs ago that i read at totalbarca. when he was asked about moments of disappointment he replied about the person behind goal not getting recognized always...

It's hard to recognize it and that's why stats are shit and should NEVER be used as the bulk of any argument, rather, they should be sparingly used in support of an argument.

Even then, it's weak.

If we're talking about baseball that's a whole different ballgame where statistics actually mean something, but in football...call me a stats hater I don't care, they don't mean too much.

Assists are not crap lol. There is different level of assists like there is different level of goals. Immaculate throughpasses, passing after dribble, compared to goals like screamers and solo goals. But then there is 1 meter passes like there is tap ins, and penalties. If there is bad passers, great goal scorers score less, if there is bad goal scorers, great passers assists less and so on.

What is important is that both lead to a goal, so they are as valuable to the team.

Messi is a joke. He is the best attacking player I have seen in my life.

When he puts his mind to it,he can defend very well.Almost always forces a mistake.Trouble is,he longer tries.

Messi is the best ball presser in the world, if he would concentrate it. 09-10 he had the most interceptions of any forward in La Liga, bar Camunas, and considering how much more attacking Messi did, that's amazing. The problem has been the team, Messi had to build the attack and then also finish it, so there has been no energy left for also to defend.

Hopefully the quality of wingers and midfield will now allow him to press more effectively.

he kinda has to build attack.. when you have 4 marking you, it's time to drop deep and throw in a through pass to someone who is supposed to be open, pedro never got open and sanchez would miss all 1v1 situations.
