GARY CAHILL could be in line for a stunning move from Bolton to Barcelona.

The European champions have put Cahill on their wanted list and are expected to make a bid in the January transfer window.

Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola has had the England defender watched several times this season and has clearly been impressed.

He reckons Cahill could be a long- term replacement for Nou Camp veteran Carles Puyol.

Now he is poised to test the water with a £10m offer for the centre-back in a move that would rank as one of the biggest surprises in Premier League history.

A Spanish source told Starsport: “It might seem unbelievable, but Barcelona have been watching Cahill and like the look of him.

“They think he’s comfortable on the ball and very strong defensively, so why not?

“He’s still young and is an England international, so there’s a realistic chance it could happen.”

Cahill has been a long- term target of both Arsenal and Tottenham but would jump at the chance to join Barca instead.

The 25-year-old is in the final 12 months of his contract and the club are resigned to losing him.

He was expected to quit in the summer but the Gunners refused to meet the asking price and Spurs failed in a last-gasp attempt to lure him to White Hart Lane at the end of August.

Bolton have been reluc- tant to offer him a new and improved deal, with chair- man Phil Gartside determined to cash in on his prize asset in January.

This has alerted Guardiola. Cahill was keen on a move to the Emirates but boss Owen Coyle dismissed the Gunners’ £6m bid as “derisory” – sparking a war of words between the clubs.

Arsene Wenger signed German international Per Mertesacker, but is still believed to be interested in a move for Cahill.
