Who do you think was the best striker of 2011?
Re: Goallegacy's best Striker of 2011
Well.....If your judging soley by goals and consistency then I'd give it to RVP.
But Sushi you are underrating what Benz achieved this year, sure he was in Ronaldo's shadow....but if you take a closer look you'll realise that Ronaldo took approximately 3x the shots Benz took and probably played near twice the minutes. One thing's for certain he didn't score 2x or 3x the goals.
You would be hard pressed to find someone with a better Goal or Assist/ Minute Ratio........or Goal:Shot ratio.( Gomez is one).
@LM Yep......I didn't see either of the other two canidates do anything of not in the CL.Maybe his 2 goals and an assist in 4 games against Barca is more noteworthy.
For me the best performance any of the canidates gave was RVP's hattrick against Chelsea.
RVP has been brilliant this year....I have no problems with that......but you really don't need to put down Benz to say that.
Of all the canidates....he is the only one with a title to his name.....granted he didn't even play in the title game he was great throughout the competition.
If the criteria is as stoically set as Sushi would have it....RVP should win.

Re: Goallegacy's best Striker of 2011
If we went by efficiency, then Higgs would eat Benzema
And Ronaldo would be pure shit
You also have to take into account that Benzema plays upfront, while Ronaldo plays farther from goal.
At the end of the day, the game is won by goals and strikers are the men responsible for them, so final result is what's key here, IMO.

Robin Goat Persie.
Carrying Arsenal on his shoulders and quite fitting in the end when he signed off 2011 by scoring a goal for his team considering he has been outstanding all year.

lol what does that have to do with anything?
Ronaldo is his own player and so is Benzema. Benz has been consistent throughout the year.
Also Benz was like joint 3rd top scorer in Europe last season after Ronaldo and Messi ffs.

Actually Cavani should have been in this list ahead of Soldado and Rooney.

Re: Goallegacy's best Striker of 2011
This one's a no brainer, really. Van Persie has carried Arsenal on his shoulders this year, has been the best striker in the world, by far. If Arsenal didn't have him present in their system, they would probably be struggling mid-table as Chamakh isn't capable, despite leading the line well last year, of what van Persie has done this year. Definitely deserves the recognition. Behind him, close second, has to be Mario Gomez. The best striker in the Bundesliga, although not technically gifted. Can play dire for the majority of the game, but thanks to his poaching ability -- he pops up with crucial goals. Those two deserve recognition and hopefully more acknowledge what they've done in 2011.

RvP easy.
it's not fair to say he carries the team though. Undermines the massive improvements in defense(szczesny-awesome gk, koscielny is becoming one of the best in PL, Song) RvP just carries the scoring department

Re: Goallegacy's best Striker of 2011
Hm. Gomez won the "TorjƤgerkanone" of the season 2010/11 with 28 goals and in 2011/12 he is leading again with 16 goals in the 16 BL matches that he played. He also scored 7 goals in the CL 2011/12 so far (including the qualification matches against Zurich). Then he scored 8 goals in 8 NT matches in 2011.
For the calendar year 2011 it is a combined 49 goals on 53 matches. Anyone have the numbers for RvP and Benzema handy?

Re: Goallegacy's best Striker of 2011
I think Gomez has scored more goals than van Persie, but reasons I favour van Persie over Gomez is that he technically plays in a much better league, where the competition is much more fierce. Also, van Persie just has that class ooze all over him. However, when it has come to the Champions League, Gomez has outshone van Persie. It's a very tight margin, and I'm very surprised that other names have been mentioned as opposed to van Persie and Gomez.

Re: Goallegacy's best Striker of 2011
Um, I'm not going into the "better league" discussion here, but I doubt the EPL competition is harder than in the Bundesliga. I mean, the BL is the league where about every team can become champion (other than Leverkusen ). And you can't say his goals in the CL were sored against weak opposition (other than the one against Zurich maybe). And playing and scoring in the NT isn't exactly a small feat either, no matter that the German NT belongs to the better ones.Gladiator wrote:I think Gomez has scored more goals than van Persie, but reasons I favour van Persie over Gomez is that he technically plays in a much better league, where the competition is much more fierce. Re: Goallegacy's best Striker of 2011
Oh, I just checked Van Persie's NT record for 2011. He scored 6 goals in 6 Quali matches (albeit 4 or them against San Marino and one each against Hungary) and none in four friendlies (against Turkey, Brazil, Uruguay and Switzerland).
Gomez' NT goals in 2011 were against Austria (2), Azerbaijan (1), Turkey (1) and Belgium (1) in the Euro quali, and against Australia (1) and Uruguay (1) in four friendlies (while he missed out against Brazil, where he only played 45 minutes and Ukraine).
So you can't say Gomez just scores against weak opponents either, while RVP scores against strong ones.

Re: Goallegacy's best Striker of 2011
Looking at both the stats and overall play...I have to pick RVP over Gomez. He's not just a finisher...he can create play as well...bring his teammates into the match...I supposed that's a bit unfair to Gomez as that's not really in his job description with Bayern, but RVP just has that bit more about him that separates the two...
