Re: Swiss Goalkeeper Appreciation Thread
Now for something that really merits some proper appreciation ^^
This Sunday was the 11th competitive match in a row that Yann Sommer kept a clean sheet for FC Basel in the St.Jakobs-Park. As a matter of fact, this season (Super League, Swiss Cup, CL quali + EL), he managed to keep 19 clean sheets in 31 competitive matches.

Re: Swiss Goalkeeper Appreciation Thread
Yann Sommer was the hero in the penalty shoot-out Basel vs Tottenham tonight!! He held one shot and hypnotized Adebayor to shoot another ball to meet Ramos' ball in the earth orbit.
Yann Sommer happy to hold to the 2:2 in the 2nd half
Basel is through to the EL semi final!!

Pfff. He wasn't sh*t. He saved quite some shots, too. The defense was sh*t.

Ok ok the defence was at fault for the first goal lol. Should have done better for the second, though

With the Victoria's Secret run-up and the venomous shot, the ball was on a successful trajectory. Then Yann Sommer raised his right hand like Jesus towards a disciple and the ball deviated away. Split heavens with the sound of his name.

*sighs* In the post match interview he said he positioned Fabian Schär wrong, thus he had problems seeing the ball correctly. He was pretty down and said that of course this goal was on himLex wrote:Did not cover himself in glory tonight

Re: Swiss Goalkeeper Appreciation Thread
Yann Sommer won the Swiss Golden Player Award for Best Goalkeeper 2013 after he already received it in 2012 and 2010, too. The Swiss Golden Player Award is given to the best football and ice hockey players in Switzerland and it is voted by the player organisations of Swiss football and Swiss ice hockey.

Re: Swiss Goalkeeper Appreciation Thread
As Diego Benaglio and Marwin Hitz are Swiss, I thought I should publish the kicker.de ranking of the Bundesliga GKs after the "Hinrunde" 2013/14 in this thread, too:
Currently there are rumours that after Marco Wölfli's injury, Ottmar Hitzfeld might elect Marwin Hitz as new 3rd GK for the Swiss NT behind Diego Benaglio and Yann Sommer - although Roman Bürki of course should be on the shortlist, too.
- Spoiler:

Squee! Yann Sommer just was elected in the Swiss Super League Dream Team - so he was voted the top GK of the RSL.

Re: Swiss Goalkeeper Appreciation Thread
Yeah. Max Eberl is in an interview on TV atm, and he has a broad grin on the face when asked about the possibility of Yann Sommer following Marc-André ter Stegen, albeit he refuses to say anything definite. ^^
Sky claims that things are practically fixed, Yann Sommer gets a 4 year contract and he costs around 10 mio Euros transfer fee. (Actually the transfer fee varies between media from 6 mio Euros up to 10 mio Euros.)
Destination BMG <3

Re: Swiss Goalkeeper Appreciation Thread
So - with Roman Bürki signing up for SC Freiburg, that means that the 4 top GKs of Switzerland now all play in the Bundesliga. After Diego Benaglio in Wolfsburg and Marwin Hitz in Augsburg, Yann Sommer got the Nr.1 job in Mönchengladbach and now Roman Bürki will replace Oliver Baumann in Freiburg. Not bad for a country like Switzerland!

Re: Swiss Goalkeeper Appreciation Thread
This thread definitely merits an update after Diego Benaglio's retirement from international football.
So here are the three current goalies of the Swiss Nati:
Nr.1: Yann Sommer (BMG) <3
Nr.2: Roman Bürki (SC Freiburg)
Nr.3: Marwin Hitz (FC Augsburg)

Re: Swiss Goalkeeper Appreciation Thread
Yann Sommer has top stats in most of the GK relevant areas in the Bundesliga (according to the BL database as quoted by bild.de) so far:
Save percentages:
Manuel Neuer (Bayern) - 87,50%
Yann Sommer (Gladbach) - 87,10 %
Loris Karius (Mainz) - 82,86 %
Timo Horn (Köln) 82,86 %
Kevin Trapp (Frankfurt) - 77,42 %
Roman Bürki (Freiburg) - 72,97 %
Marwin Hitz (Augsburg) - 72,73 %
Ron-Robert Zieler (Hannover) - 72,41 %
Oliver Baumann (Freiburg) - 70,00 %
Ralf Fährmann (Schalke) - 68,42 %
Diego Benaglio (Wolfsburg) - 66,67 %
Bernd Leno (Leverkusen) - 65,63 %
Roman Weidenfeller (Dortmund) - 64,29 %
(Swiss goalies in bold)
Then he supposedly has the highest number of caught crosses with 17 - even more than Manuel Neuer (unfortunately the article doesn't give Neuers exact number there - gotta check if I can find it - the stats at bundesliga.com differ completely and give "caught crosses" at 11 for Sommer and 3 for Neuer, but somehow the number for Neuer sounds pretty unrealistic). Too bad that the Bundesliga DB is fully commercial and one needs to pay them hefty fees for the exhaustive stats.
Another stat I find surprising is that Sommer supposedly catches 60% of the balls aimed at him, while Neuer only catches about 50%.
