Here's the reality.

Some are trying to say that the fact that he lost in both major competitions has no bearing on how good or bad this season was for Messi. They're wrong.

Some are saying all that he did dosen't matter because he didn't win both major trophies and scored a couple of penalties. They're also wrong.

When we exit the matrix , we can all see that Messi had a spectacular season (possibly the best statistically since Pele's days) but it's couloured by th fact that he failed to win in the two biggest competitions and failed to push his team over the hump when they most most needed it.

So in that sense it's not as good a season as last season

Dmac, you're a basketball fan so i'll explain it to you in different terms. When Wilt dropped 50 and 25 over the course of the entire season , but didn't win a C,did people call it the GOAT season. Probably.....but when we look back...was it the GOAT season....no it wasn't.

When Lebron is out there dropping insane numbers but failing in crucial moments , is anyone saying he had the greatest season in history?/

When Kobe dropped 35.6 PPG but got bumped in the second round of the playoffs, did you think he had a better year than 09?

That's the situation.

If Messi stops scoring, people say he is past it and in a rut.

If he keeps scoring, they say he is padding his stats.

Ridiculous. If it were so easy to "pad" stats, every player would be scoring as many.

I'm glad i lived and watched Messi in real time. This guy is really something special and soon will the great one, or perhaps he is already.

He gets some crap goals, but so do everyone else.

He is a bloody genius and f**k amazing.

Ronaldo is great prob top 20 of all time. Zlatan is a serbian powerhouse but they can't compare.

Kudos to this guy, he is forever alone on the top. :shisha:

When Kobe dropped 35.6 PPG but got bumped in the second round of the playoffs, did you think he had a better year than 09?

That's the situation.

No it's not the situation.

To compare Ronaldo's year last year to Messi's this year is just wrong. They are nothing alike at all and Messi's this year is so much better it's not even funny.

Not only did Messi destroy Real head to head over the course of 6 games but he will outscore him by a large margin and have a ton more assists and if you use last years numbers (Ronaldo's) to compare them to it's even worse.

Madrid fans don't get to decide what is a big trophy and what is a small trophy, it's like you guys have selective amnesia.

The hype to the Club World Cup was massive and most pundits thought the winner would go a long way to decide who was the best player in the world (Neymar vs Messi) plus lots of people thought Santos had a legit shot to take the trophy. It may have been Messi's best game this year as he was totally dominant.

Also, any trophy Madrid or Barca win by beating the other in the final or on the way to is important, hence the Super Copa. Again Messi was out of this world while Ronaldo was not.

This is the reason the Copa Del Rey was celebrated so heavily by Madrid last year because they beat Barca in the final, and now you guys act like the same rules don't apply for Barca so much as your fans are saying we didn't win anything this year.

Not to mention any Barca fan with a brain in there head conceded the league about a month before our last meeting this year when we were ten points down. Messi not having a good game that game really means nothing. We beat you once and you beat us once in the league it's a wash.

Messi's play in one game didn't lose the league for us, if you think that then you know nothing of team sports or how a football season works. If it wasn't for Messi we lose the league by a lot more points and would have never been in the position to bring it to 1 point in which we still would not have won the league had we won that game.

You guys put so much emphasis on that game because it's one of the two times you have beaten us in the last 20 games. In the grand scheme of things that game meant nothing and was the least important game we played all year against each other as your lead was already enough to coast to the trophy.

And comparing Basketball and football is just wrong as well. Kobe nor Lebron have had season's anywhere near the best ever number's wise. Oscar Robertson averaged a triple double one year and didn't get anywhere near the title. Wilt averaged 30 points and 22 boards for his career and won one title because it's a team sport, he was still the best player through most of his career just like Messi was better then Ronaldo this year and way better then what Ronaldo produced last year.

Messi did produce the best year numbers wise unlike Kobe and Lebron and Ronaldo. That is the difference. So yes, Messi was better this year, and it's not close. Ronaldo too failed in the biggest moment for his team this year too in the CL, let's not forget that.

Madrid won a league in which tested endurance and depth. Barca beat them soundly head to head for 2 trophies and won a 6 game series between the teams while they were both beaten at the same stage in the CL in which Messi was the leading scorer while Ronaldo was way off his pace and Real had a very easy path in this years CL. But for some reason Real act's like Ronaldo had a better CL which again is not the case.

This thread was created to applaud Messi on his individual brilliance this season

Here is the reality: You contradict yourself!

Read what you wrote, people are saying two things, you say both are wrong and then chose one of them as right. Either you are delusional, or you are so frustrated, that cant think straight or cant express yourself straight.

Anyway as I have said again and again, it's not because Messi is so much better than greats of the past, it's because defences of this era are the worst I have seen in 20+ years of football and defenders are not given any room for error as in previous eras.

We have Hunterlaar scoring 40+ in the Bundesliga with (and no offense intended) a very very average team.

We have Ronaldo/Benzema and Higuain making scoring records look like a complete joke, not to mention Messi.? Or even Gomez in the UCL.

Look at Falcao in the Europa breaking all known records.

You can't simply say all these players are better than all before them or they are the highest levels, especially if you watch them week in and week out. If Hunterlaar actually made the most of his chances he would have numbers similar to Messi (anyone who watches him knows what I mean lmao)

A few years back we saw a trend in international football where more leeway was given to attackers because it seemed that more goals = more entertainment for the neutrals and now more than ever you can see that at club level.

I feel that this won't be a once in a generation effort like most think or like it would have been in the past. If Ronaldo, Falcoa, Messi, Hunterlaar, Gomez and co can get such insane numbers, then it stands to reason there will be plenty more players to come in the future that will as well.

No offense to the record he broke it's a great achievement, but anyone who has watched football longer than 5 years and doesn't have their rose tinted glasses on knows what I'm talking about.

I said the same when Ronaldo broke Puskas' and Sanchez's records and I will say the same for Messi now.

Or maybe, it could just be that the attackers are getting better?

And how do you explain the lower number of goals scored per game in the current era?

I am a firm believer that everything is a lot better than it was in the past. I believe the same applies to football too.
