I don't have set contact hours but I am normally doing 9am-4/5pm days. Sometimes I work later, such as tonight, sometimes I work less though.

Not appendices, It is quite low, the max word count allowed (not including references, abstract, appendices et al) is 8,000 so it can't be long to begin with.

The trick is to be concise everywhere

Doesn't that show up if you highlight the whole doc?
Or maybe they'll deliberately change the colour of the whole doc to black (they probably don't really care).

It will, though the best way to get around word counts for works that won't be checked manually is to be interesting. Markers only care if the student is boring them or waffling.

Really?
Doesn't really matter for our assignments though, they like to make us include cover sheets and reference lists which screws up Turnitin's word count anyway. Then some subjects do and don't include in-text citations in the word count, and .. I don't think they really bother for us at least.
