Shakhtar Donetsk & Ukraince Crisis Empty Shakhtar Donetsk & Ukraince Crisis

Six Shakhtar Donetsk players refusing to return to Ukraine due to conflict

Shakhtar Donetsk’s owner has confirmed six players have refused to return to Ukraine for the new season as conflict rages around the club’s home city.

Brazilians Douglas Costa, Fred, Dentinho, Alex Teixiera and Ismaily plus Argentine striker Facundo Ferreyra remained in France following a friendly against Lyon on Saturday.

In a statement on the club’s website, the owner, Rinat Akhmetov, warned the players that “in the first instance they will suffer” if they do not return, because their actions could activate compensation clauses forcing them to pay “tens of millions of euros” to Shakhtar.

“It is true, six team players have not come,” said Akhmetov.

“I don’t rule out that these players will return to the team quickly, and some of them tomorrow. Players have contracts that they have to abide by. If they do not come, I think, they will be the first to suffer. Each of them has a minimum release clause, which is tens of millions of euros. If someone wants to reduce this amount by a million, then such a decision is our right. There won’t be a clearance sale.

“Hopefully, the mind and heart will prevail over misunderstanding, and the players will not follow temptation and fear. Especially since there is nothing to fear. We are ready to provide security. We will not take risks and in any case we won’t bring players to dangerous places.”

Shakhtar’s Romanian coach Mircea Lucescu has blamed British-based agent Kia Joorabchian for persuading the players not to return to Ukraine.

“It is necessary to explain what happened,” he said on Shakhtar’s website. “It is not the players’ desire, it’s their agents’ work. A few hours before the kickoff of the match against Lyonnais, Kia showed up. And after the game, at two in the morning, he took our players away. The very talented ones: Teixeira, Douglas, Fred. The rest are not so important.

“He wanted to do the same to Adriano, Ilsinho, Marlos and Taison. But they refused. His goal is to make the players free agents, just to make money. This is wrong. This is his alibi. He wants to make use of the situation in the country and get the players for free. But they have contracts. Ferreyra has another agent. But he also expects to capitalise on the situation.”

The Ukrainian military is attempting to retake the city of Donetsk in the east of the country, which is controlled by pro-Russian rebels. The Ukrainian Football Federation has yet to rule where Shakhtar will play its home games while the conflict rages.

“We want to play in Donetsk very much, but, unfortunately, at the moment we cannot do it,” said Akhmetov.

“We will play where we will be allowed to: we would like to do it in Kharkiv. The decision regarding the championship is taken by the Ukrainian Football Federation. Through our game, we will call for peace and try to bring joy to our fans.”

Manchester United have been linked with an approach for forward Douglas Costa, who has scored 33 goals in 170 appearances for Shakhtar since 2010. Brazilian international Fernandinho left Shakhtar last summer for Manchester City.

Fifa should step in and null their contracts... All contract probably have Force majeure in them, If the players don't feel safe they should have the right to stay away

Politics having a negative effect on other entities. Surprise Surprise.

It's harsh on the clubs in Ukraine but agreed that if the players don't feel safe then they shouldn't go back.

according to l'equipe, their manager think its the work of Kia Joorabchian who is Tevez's agent. He has managed to convince them not to go back and he will get them moves to other clubs.

Yeah wouldn't go back either. Shaktar is right in the middle of the conflict. UEFA should cancel the Ukrainian league for the time being.

When it comes down to it, the players safety should come before any contractual agreement.

There has to be some kind of resolution here.

Domestic leagues aren't UEFA competitions, it's their own call what they'll do.

These players are Shakhtar players, so obviously they cannot play for other clubs, but I think the players are right to be concerned about their safety and it doesn't seem unreasonable to me that they postpone their return to Donetsk until the situation clears up over there.

All contracts are Fifa approved, so there might be a Force majeure clause in all of them

If the players went to Fifa and asked them, Fifa would probably cancel their contracts

Shakhtar Donetsk & Ukraince Crisis Empty Re: Shakhtar Donetsk & Ukraince Crisis

Post by RealGunner Tue Jul 22, 2014 11:56 pm

The fact that some of Shakhtar’s foreign players did not return from the training camp with the Donetsk team was mentioned many times in the mass media. Today, the topic remains relevant and even heated in social networks. The players who didn’t come back claim that they have not left the club, but simply fear the situation in Ukraine. For comments, our correspondent addressed the CEO of FC Shakhtar Sergei Palkin.

- Sergei Anatol’yevich, the issue of players’ safety is actively discussed in the press. Notably, it is done through the lens of the case of those Shakhtar players, who left the team after the Swiss training camp. What’s your take on this situation?

- I would like to stress straightaway that the issue of players’ safety is the main priority of our club. Shakhtar will base itself, train and play only in those cities where the team safety is guaranteed. Naturally, no one is going to take the players to the places where combat activity is underway or there’s at least a small hint at the insecure stay. Once happened the case with our players, who decided not to return to the territory of Ukraine, citing fears for their lives and health, we have consulted with UEFA and received the relevant documents.

- What is it?

- They officially confirmed the list of Ukraine’s cities, where, from the viewpoint of UEFA, there are all conditions for the safe conduct of the top level matches. We will take it as a guide in our future work. Besides, UEFA recommends our players who left the team to return as soon as possible. We will forward, of course, the copies of these documents to the players and their agents.

- You mentioned a list of the UEFA-approved cities...

- Right, these are the places where the Champions League and Europa League matches have been authorized. There are four of them at the moment: Kyiv, Lviv, Dnipropetrovsk and Odesa. We are studying the pros and cons of each option and ponder where Shakhtar will be based. But in any case, it will be one of the designated cities.

- But there was information that Shakhtar would be based in Kharkiv?

- Indeed, we have considered the city as the most suitable for us. We even did some preparatory work to ensure that the team can stay there, preparing for the games and playing their home games there. But, unfortunately, Kharkiv hasn’t got on the UEFA list to host European competitions. If this happens, we will reconsider this option.

- When will you take the decision on Shakhtar’s location?
- In the nearest future. We will immediately inform the public about the decision of our club. At the same time, I once again want to draw everyone’s attention to the fact that Shakhtar will definitely train and play home games exclusively in the cities recognized by UEFA as safe.
