Re: The Bundesliga Thread
That is true, but at the same time that's also why the board never really stood behind him, he was a dead man walking from the beginning. He walked pretty far as a dead man, I give you that.rwo power wrote:The more you actually have to admire Jens Keller for staying 22 months, considering he was just meant to be a caretaker for few weeks until someone else was found, too XDHapless_Hans wrote:They fire their manager and then the assistant manager/youth team coach etc takes over until a new big name manager is found.

Re: The Bundesliga Thread
Frankly, I doubt anyone really can do a much better job than Keller anyway - Schalke had much bigger names who managed to achieve less and were fired after shorter spells (the only exception being Huub Stevens in his Euro Fighter spell).
IMO the problem really lies with the board, not the coach(es).

Re: The Bundesliga Thread
Only thing I remember about DiMateo at Chelsea was him being a joke. Losing the dressing room to Terry from the get go who basically managed them to a CL win, it was most evident during the CL matches when Terry was on the touchline When do you ever see a respected coach get harassed by a player as to what tactics he needs to use in crunch moments?

Re: The Bundesliga Thread
Well, the Schalke players (KPB, that is) questioned Jens Keller's tactics, too. I'm curious if he tries that with di Matteo, too
Di Matteo already noticed in his press conference that Schalke's environment is a bit chaotic and that he will never manage to get it calmed down either as "no one ever managed to get peace and quiet into the club in the last 100 years"...

Grain of salt.
Nobody is mourning Keller's sacking.
Which "Germans on this forums" said they are not pleased with the move? And who of those same were not pleased with Guardiola?
If you're insinuating nationalist bias you need to ground it on more than nothing at all.
I don't care for Keller either way, I wasn't convinced he was up to it, but then it's always the same with Schalke - the way they treat managers it's hard for managers to be up to it in the first place. Keller was being undermined for a year now by the behaviour of the board.
So excuse us but if Schalke fire another manager and rationalize it with the need for more "stability" (as Heldt said), we are having a healthy laugh.
Other than that, Di Matteo is a likeable guy, maybe he can get Schalke to park the bus and fluke their way out of the CL group lol, but you don't really want to tell us he is the tactical genius Schalke have been missing.
Does the word fluke have any relation onto what was thought of by Bayern fans as their defeat in Munich? Cause that would just be poor form.
I agree the Schalke board are stern and many times concerned more about making money and creating results.
Yet now that they have an actual tactician rather than a man who was plum out of his depth since his tenure began, they can actually aim higher than being content in their 3rd-4th throne.
Personally think despite some bad results, letting go for Huub Stevens in favour of that amateur was a mistake in the first place.

Well, that "amateur" brought Schalke into the CL twice. Not so bad, if you ask me.

Considering the complete lack of real competition he faced outside the Top 4 and the minimal expectations required of him given the squad value and depth, I wouldn't expect anything less. Leverkusen is a team whom I was very impressed in how they reached above their expectations given their average squad and poor depth.
Where I felt bad for Keller was the injuries to the players yet on a tactical level he was awful. Some games it would take more than a bag of coals to hit him on the head in seeing what was wrong with his static and linear formations.
In the future? I'm sure he learned much from the experience as there is no point writing him out as a manager already. Hopefully he starts off in a smaller club to build his bones again.

Re: The Bundesliga Thread
Everyone is entitled to their opinion but Keller is without doubt one of the biggest dumbasses to ever coach a BL squad. Then again, Gelsenkirchen would have to be the first place where you'd expect an illiterate baboon at the helm.

Re: The Bundesliga Thread
LOL, if Marc Wilmots is to believed (and I don't really see why not), then Roberto di Matteo was only second choice (or even worse - they really wanted Thomas Tuchel in the first place after all).
In the PK of the Belgian NT, Marc Wilmots stated that he was asked by Schalke to take over the coaching job again. Wilmots politely declined as he didn't want to let down the Belgian NT. I rather assume that he really thought his first spell at Schalke was enough already.
Schalke's way with possible managers and manager replacements never fails to amuse

Re: The Bundesliga Thread
Where is this idea Di Matteo is a bad manager coming from? He won both the FA Cup and Champions League in about 5 months and had us top of the League (6 wins in 7 games) before that farcical defeat at United *bleep* him over. (2 players wrongly sent off and an offside goal for their winner). We then got battered by Juventus and that was that.
He will do well at Schalke.
